The Stick Flute

It is the great unknown variable in all recorders: the Stick Flute or Csakan Recorder - an instrument introduced at the beginning of the 19th century in Vienna for music of the early romanticism. It appeared first in the shape of a multi-functional walking stick and became a fashionable musical instrument for several decades. Nik Tarasov presents the phenomenon and plays some antique and copied original instruments.

Thank you so much for this glorious video. It was especially fascinating to hear the antique instruments. At the age of 79, early this year, I bought a Mollenhauer 2-key csakan, determined to play Heberle, Kraehmer, and some of the others, on the original instrument rather than a recorder. It is such fun - though, of course, I can only listen to your tone and finger work and think: oh, I wish…. But I wouldn’t have bought it had it not been for your videos and - I believe - your work with Mr Mollenhauer on his csakan. So, thank you.

It is a great pleasure listening to your beautiful interpretation of the pieces by Krähmer played on various, also antique, instruments!! I especially love the warmth of your sound, your precise use of second fingerings to add even more colours to the music and of course also your way of explaining the instrument beforehand!
