WALKS IN DORSET at CORSCOMBE (AND THE DEVIL'S ARMCHAIR) (4K)

- In this episode of my series “Walks in Dorset”, I take a 4 mile circular walk (with a detour) from the village of Corscombe which is located 4 miles North East of Beaminster & 6 miles South of Crewkerne. Once again I am accompanied by my Whippet, Logan.
I parked my car at The Fox Inn and headed West past Corscombe Court into meadows before diverting back for a wander through the village.
Following a very old track - Barrow Lane (part of the Harrow Way which in turn is one of the oldest “roads” in Britain ….. in existence since the Stone Age!) - I headed South to Beckham's Coppice.
My route then took me past the ancient stones known as the “Devil's Armchair” - thought to be the remains of a Neolithic Long Barrow.
I continued uphill to the top of a ridge which gave me great views to the North. After a small detour West to visit the High Ground Meadow Natural Burial Mound, I headed East along a section of the Hardy Way which took me through Coombe Bottom.
My second detour took me South past Urless Farm and it's pretty lake.
I was then unable to find or identify either of my possible intended footpaths back North, either side of the lake. Despite there being a Waymarker for one of the paths, it was clearly impenetrable & so I had to retrace my steps back to Coombe Bottom.
Even then, there was no clear path along the Hardy Way (it seemed to just stop in thick vegetation), but I managed to make my way North to join up with the track that took me past the Church of St Mary (which I then visited).
My final destination was The Fox Inn back in the village.

Hi Dave another glorious walk taking in the village of Corscombe. The Devil's Armchair not to be sat in if "overly superstitious" I just love the church building,. so well cared for. I was intrigued by your information regarding Thomas Hollis the Political Philosopher. To be buried almost incognito is rather sad, but if they were his wishes then that's how it is. As usual the landscape was fabulous. Thanks to you and Logan.
Have that pint in the Fox on me! Cheers Dave
Thank you so much Mike - that is very kind of you!
Lovely views is an understatement! ❤️🏴
It really is quite beautiful around there for sure!
Your usual high quality walk - the older I get here in the US the more nostalgic I get thinking of my youth in Dorset.
Thank you. Dorset is a fine county indeed!
Ah, the mystery of the disappearing public footpaths! A common occurrence in this part of the world. You chose a stunning area of landscape to walk for this one. Thoroughly enjoyed it! Thanks Dave and Logan
Thank you. Yes, I fear that some of those footpaths have not been used for many a year!
Thanks as always for the pleasure of watching you both, and also the inspiration to get out and explore the beautiful countryside in which we are fortunate to live... :-)
Thank you Mark. :)
My dad loves your videos - told me about this...I live in Corscombe & do those routes regularly ! Brilliant
Thank you Jennifer & indeed thanks for watching.
Wow the good old A356, I'm in Crewkerne and I love that trip across the ridge of the hills to get to Dorchester. Great as always Dave (and Logan) thank you.
Thank you. :)
Good morning Dave lovely video absolutely stunning scenery Georges weather what more do you want of course nice pub.
Thank you Craig. The Fox Inn made for a perfect ending to the walk.
lovely walk along the old ancient road and footpaths to see historical places
There was so much to explore on that walk, Cath.
I was amazed to come across your video as Corscombe is such a small little place! My parents retired from London to a small cottage close to the Fox where I visited them on occasion. My mother helped to clean the Fox and I remember a morning where I helped her polish the horse brasses inside. Brought back quite a few memories.
It is such a pretty village and I really enjoyed my visit there. The pub garden, opposite by the stream, is a splendid place to be on a sunny day!
Amazing walk through the village and into the countryside with wonderful fields
Many thanks Keith. :)
Well that was quite an adventure! Another interesting walk with some beautiful views. I couldn’t help but notice how you touched the stones. I wonder how many people have done that before you throughout the ages. So enjoyable to join you both on your travels.
Thanks Lynn. Yes, I just couldn't resist touching the stones - they seemed so magical!
Come on Dave, you don't need to be checking out burial locations yet. You've got years left in you! Thanks for another beautiful walk.
Thank you. Well, it is always a good idea to "plan ahead"!
Afternoon Dave .. looks lovely there.Logan and you are brighting up my day as it is cloudy and humid here. Such a beautiful place for a good walk.Hugs to Logan and big thank you for another wonderful walk.
Thank you Melissa.
Another lovely walk, Dave, with, it seemed, not a soul around. A bit of a worry when you got lost! The use of the new toy provided some added interest to the video. Thanks!
Thanks Jim. Whilst I recall that the pub was busy(at the end), we had most of the nearby countryside to ourselves that day!
What an epic walk, Dave. Thanks! Proving that anything looks cuter with a whippet in front of it. Cheers!
Thank you Yvonne. Agree with you 100%!
Super video Dave. Great weather for it and the scenery was just stunning and a pub and a pint to finish. Heaven !
Thank you Geoff. We were certainly lucky with the weather that day.
I seem to be always banging on about the lovely green scenes and gorgeous blue skies of your videos. Now impressive, interestingly-shaped, white clouds must be added to the list.
Thank you. Yes, I love some of the "cloud shapes". Often I don't notice them at the time but they really become more obvious on film!
@@DaveFord Yes, they really show up well onscreen.
Looks like you picked a beautiful day for a walk, glad to see the Fox is re opened was planning a walk in Corscombe a few years ago and it was unfortunately closed
I can highly recommend a visit to The Fox!
Lovely walk, Dave and Logan, even if you did go on a detour!
Loved the standing stones and the modern-day burial mound. I've seen a couple of these, super idea!
Thanks Nic. The Devil's Armchair was quite magical .... just a shame it was in such a shadow (which made it tricky to photograph!).
I was intrigued by the modern burial barrow. Let’s hope it’ll survive for as long as many of its ancient counterparts have. In my opinion the use of your new drone only adds to the quality of your presentation. In a way it heightens the impression that we, the viewers, are walking along with you. All in all it was a lovely, lovely walk.
Thank you Mark. I am still getting used to finding out the best conditions for using the HoverAirX1. It does struggle a bit if there is any wind as it is so light and although the lens is on a gimbal it only operates "vertically" with the "horizontal" stabilization being sorted out digitally .... at least I think that is how it works!
A walk full of interesting antiquities! Found the burial barrow a bit creepy though! Did anyone else see a laughing face on the stone at 7:54 in the recording? Nice to see Logan having a paddle before the pub!
There are some very interesting "shapes" on one of those stones and from one angle, it does look like there is a nose & an eye!
Lovely area, Dave, with some splendid views. That burial mound must be quite unusual for modern times. I've certainly never seen or heard of one before. Those standing stones were also interesting.
The Devil's Armchair was quite fascinating!
Lovely stuff Dave, Corscombe really is a charming village, and being below the ridge, it always feels sheltered. Not been to the Fox for a few years, but I did see it was taken over and then abandoned by Mark Hix. I suspect it was probably "improved" inside and lost some of its quaintness, but I could be wrong. Will make an effort to visit again in the near future. Keep up the good work.
Thank you. The Fox has a lovely spot to sit in, outside, opposite the building by a pretty stream.
Hi Dave , another great walk ! We did this afternoon, with the two dogs 😊
Unfortunately the new burial mound doesn’t now look like the way it was in your film . There are diggers there at the moment. Looks like they’ve taken top layer of grass off and re shaped a bit ? Don’t know if you noticed, but just behind the mound , is a small burial ground. Was a lovely place to sit and eat our picnic and look at the beautiful views towards Yeovil and beyond. Can even just make out the Tor at Glastonbury 😊😊
By the way , is it possible to get a retrospective Dave’s Walks badge off of you 😂😂, as we did meet a few years ago , before badges , on your walk from Compton Air field . We were going in the opposite direction. Keep up good work
Alan , Michelle Maisie and Fred 🐕
Looks like you had great weather for your walk today. I remember meeting you that day - I was filming my Compton Abbas walk. Yes, no problems with the badges. If you send a PM to me via the Dave's Countryside Walks Page with your address, I can send them out to you. All the best. Dave.
@@DaveFord . Thanks Dave, that’s good of you . I’ll do that tomorrow. Meant to ask, what Drone are you using ? Thank you . Alan
@@lambrettascooter It is a HoverAir X1.
@@DaveFord . Thank you 😊
You’re never lost in Dorset.
Yes indeed!
