  • Suspended wooden floors. What are they? How are they constructed? And how do they work? In this video, John shows you a suspended timber floor in a property that we're in the process of developing in Stoke-on-Trent.
You may have seen air bricks or brick vents in your house and wondered what they are for. If you have them close to ground level, chances are you have a suspended wooden floor (or floors) in your property.
Their purpose is to allow air to circulate beneath the wooden floor (sub floor) so that you don't get any damp issues.
It's important, therefore, not to block them.
The suspended floor itself has rather a simple construction and is made up of 3 basic elements.
    1. The floorboards
    2. Wooden joists (which span the length or breadth of the room in the opposite direction to the floorboards)
    3. The brick supports (usually 1 brick wide and 4 bricks in height).
As you will see in the video, there is a gap (void) between the brick supports-and this is the crucial element of a suspended wooden floor. Because this gap allows air to circulate freely via the air bricks and prevent any damp problems occurring.

Thanks for sharing this, based in South Africa and our winters are quite cold, especially when you have a pool too....
Please share some advise on how I can fill up the space below my suspended floor, my floors are in mint condition but the cold really makes it unpleasant in winter....

Hi Darren. The best thing to do would be to insulate between the floor joists 👍
Thanks for watching our video and for your question - much appreciated.

We have a Suspended Floor we had some insulation done below the floor board(between the joist). We are planning a UFH.. (Overlay with screed).. do we need a DPM above the Floor Board?

What did you build the brickwork on? Concrete footings?

Do you have to have brick footings or can it be done with timber?

Hi there. Thank you for watching and for your question. You can't use timber for this process as it may rot and, therefore, jeopardise the integrity of the building.
