    Commuting daily on Metrolink from Chatsworth to DTLA was so efficient. I was always able to do professional reading or answer east coast call / emails on to way to Union Station. Then a quick three stops on the subway to work. Route was also very useful in getting to Hollywood- Burbank airport or on weekends getting to USC games at LA coliseum. The coast route to San Diego was also much less of a hassle then driving down the coast on Friday evening for a mini- vacation as my wife would drive down earlier in the day and avoid traffic.

    There is a growing movement to abandon the Surfline because the cost of moving the tracks away from the unstable cliffs at Del Mar is astronomical. They have about 5 years until the temporary fix also falls into the ocean, unless a big storm wipes out the reinforcement.

    I just took Pacific Surfliner from Fullerton up to Santa Barbara on July 10, first time riding it north as we usually take it down to San Diego. The single SC-44 pulls the six Superliner cars effortlessly the whole way, and when able, gets to about 80mph. There's a portion of the northbound trip where the climb gradient through the canyons is noticeable, but it's a nice ride.

    • @htgalante
      @htgalante 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I believe they’ve installed PTC. Probably the biggest issue for this line is the single tracking. If trains can’t pass they can’t accelerate to higher speeds. US track class regs actually don’t place much of a premium on grade separation for higher speed (which doesn’t make sense to me at all). You can even place a quad gate at a crossing and run at higher speeds.

      Thank you! It seems that the chargers are doing pretty well on the Surfline, but I heard they're having signalling-related issues in the Chicago area. They've been really busy with equipment orders lately.

      @@WorldwideRailfan I guess they would have to interrupt the wavey lines at the air intakes and then the result wouldn't look as good.

    Amtrak really made the best choice into ordering Chargers from Siemens Mobility. They’re reliable and fast. I’m glad other commuter railroads followed Amtrak’s footsteps into buying the SC-44 Chargers as well. Brightline made the best choice into buying SCB-40 Chargers as I do like the nose! I can’t wait to see Amtrak’s new long distance Charger ALC-42 come into service soon as well as a Dual Mode Variant of the Chargers on the Empire Corridor to replace the P32AC-DMs! EMD F125s on the other hand… this is my opinion, The F125s suck as their unreliable as they have many issues such as fuel leak and have a horrible design with K2 horns that just makes it worse unlike the Chargers with their 3rd gen K5LA horns and their famous X shape vent! Although the SC-44 Chargers don’t have noses (VIA Rail’s SC-44 don’t count as they do have noses) the ALC-42 and SCB-40 Chargers do have noses and that makes up for it. I really hope the Dual Mode Charger Variant also has a nose on the front! Can’t wait to see more Chargers in operation on other commuter railroads as well as Amtrak’s ALC-42 Long Distance Chargers!

    While I'm fine with these Tier 4 locomotives, I just wish they (particularly the Chargers) weren't so boring. The Raised Letter K5LAs have really gotten stale by this point. I feel there should be at least a few Chargers with something else. That's why I love Metrolink F125s 926 and 929, because they have awesome K3 horns, and them simply being there makes the K2s feel less lame. If only Ed Long was still alive today, he could give at least one or two of the Chargers some better horns. Imagine 5004 with an M5 and 5005 with an M3.

    The real reason why Siemens rejected the colorful Coaster paint schemes is because they confirmed that complicated paint schemes will start chipping off the SC-44 Chargers a lot earlier than the more boring paint schemes they use. I like the new Coaster paint scheme on the overhauled cars (not counting 2301 and 2302 because those cars are wrapped in the new Coaster paint scheme), but not so much on the locomotives. As time goes by, I hope people will start liking the new Coaster paint scheme over the old one.
    I actually rode in one of the overhauled Coaster cars last week, and it was not just a quiet, but also a very comfortable ride. I will say this: The trip back to Oceanside was a more comfortable than the trip to San Diego because of how smooth the locomotive was. I think once the new Next Gen Cab-Cars are delivered to NCTD in 2023, the ride quality for Southbound trips will be just as smooth as the ride quality for Northbound trips.

    Some should have a look at what Britain's been doing with their diesels and electrics... EMD won a building contact for the BR Class 66. The styling isn't pretty but the loco is powerful and used for Freight services.

    Metro link needs to paint all their equipment the same color it looks so Eww with everything different Colors. Also The new Coaster paint scheme is ugly they could have just kept the original one it was soo much better. Also The Pacific Surfliner needs to get that one coach car in the middle of train pained 😂😂 it always looks odd but definitely one of my favorite commuter railroads. I’m patiently waiting for the Surfliner coach’s to be made in HO scale so I can buy them

      Amtrak California has painted some of the CalTrans-rescued Superliners in the California colors, both for the Surfliner and the Capitol Corridor/SanJoaquin.

    Honestly as a european I really don't get the American rail fan obsession with service numbers and especially horns. Still neat video none the less, though 9400 horse power ain't that much. I mean around my neck of the woods we've recently taken delivery of a fleet of Siemens Vectrons and each of those have 8700 horse power. And the plan is to run some of them with Talgo cars like on the Cascade, and them one Vectron in each end. Like the power and acceleration of that will just be insane. And this is on top of us ordering new Intercity EMU's from Alstom which has an acceleration as fast as some Metro trains!

    I wonder why Metrolink went with EMD instead of Siemens?

    • @Brienjim2346
      @Brienjim2346 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Metrolink was on the market for new tier 4 diesels before Siemens was a proven product, EMD won the contract before the SC-44 was even considered an option as the original order dates back to 2013. The long working relationship we have with EMD going back to 1992 was the deciding factor. I think the board went all in a bit too fast on them and so we had some teething issues in the beginning but in the end we wound up with working locos that we're happy with.
