So delighted to have found such in depth videos and I am enjoying your company as I start from scratch again. Thank you so much for the time and effort you put into these. I'm using Acrylic Retarder (from Schmincke) for my Acrylic paintings. It's so damn good, it absolutely changes the way of painting with Acrylics because the drying time is much longer and I can blend the colours much better. Still not as long as with oil paints, but I usually have 10-30 minutes on the canvas (depending on how thick the paint is and how much retarder I use), which is absolutely fine for me. But the tip shown in this video with the sprayer and the soft bruch is absolutely great, thanks for that. I will definitely try it out when I do an animal painting.

    Being a 3D artist, I thought painting would be dirt simple. I was wrong...
    I decided to work in acrylic, so I watched a lot of beginner tutorials, but it seems like they dab some color here, and a few strokes there, and it looks kinda like something until you step away and that's when the magic happens. It looks really cool, but not real...
    I'm a detail kind of guy. I don't think like that. I see shapes and lines, and it gives me fits to dab and smear. :)
    Your channel is a breath of fresh air. I loved the spray bottle on the Hubby. I almost choked on my coffee. I used one on my cat and he hated it. Kept him off the table for sure.
    That racoon is perfectly rendered and it looks like a photograph! That to me is painting.

    Asking as I'm watching, so sorry if you cover it later.... do you use the same mop (blush) brush through the painting? I would think it would need to be cleaned off and dried constantly.

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I usually have multiple mop brushes available because they need to be clean and dry to work. If it starts picking up too much paint, I don't have time to clean and dry it before the paint on the canvas dries, so I grab a fresh one in that case and clean both after I'm done with that stage. :)

      Some acrylic paints have heavy metals so getting on skin can be hazardous.
      But some acrylic brands have removed all heavy metals from their products.
      With a little research, someone using acrylics over oil is far less likely to be toxic enough to cause any damage.
      But if you think about it… almost anything in life now can cause some sort of harm…
      All cleaning sprays, some deodorants, etc.
      The point is, it’s nearly impossible to completely avoid it…
      So artists might as well enjoy acrylics indoors and not stress about it…

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  2 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      I always keep several on hand so I have a clean/dry one ready to go all the time. They won't ever be ruined by these techniques. You shouldn't be getting much paint or water on the brush or it won't work. You're barely letting the tips of the bristles touch the paint, they really aren't rubbing against the canvas at all if you're doing it right. If you push hard or are scrubbing at the canvas with them then that could damage them, but that technique would be the opposite of what you want to happen for this anyway :)

    I used to use oils, and they are great, but the slow drying issue annoyed me a lot.
    I briefly switched to watercolor (mainly Gouache). I liked them, but they didn't really suit the style of art I do.
    My move to using tube acrylics was, at first, a bit of a disappointment. After doing a bit of research, I found out about the difference between student grade and artist grade acrylics. I swapped to using artist grade and the quality difference was obvious.
    A little while later, I decided to try liquid acrylics. The liquid acrylics I use, were developed primarily for airbrushing. However, I started test them out, using conventional brushes as well.
    It worked and now my paintings are 90% brush and 10% airbrush. With many, brush only.
    I do some dry brushing using them, however, for soft blending, I will use the airbrush.
    For me, the one crucial thing I discovered was not to use water to thin my acrylics.
    Water tends to break down the binders in the paint and they dry with flat dull look.
    Fortunately, the acrylics I buy (Createx Wicked), have a purpose made reducer, which does not break the quality/stability of the paint.
    Not long ago, an artist friend of mine, suggested I try using water based oils.
    I bought a set of them, but, given my comfort zone is with the liquid acrylics, I have not yet tried the water based oils.
    Every painting you do, will teach you something new. You will never stop learning your craft.
    Cheers

    Do you typically spray and then apply paint and then blend it with a brush or do you typically apply the paint, then spray and then blend with the brush?

    • @Lachri

      I do both, but more often I'm applying the paint and then spraying. It just depends on what I'm trying to accomplish. :)

    I have a question about blending with dry brushes both in acrylics and oils.
    Since the brush has to be dry. How do you not ruin it? Won't acrylics dry on the tips of the brush and ruin it? And what about blending different colors with oils?

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      That's a good question! No, the acrylics wont ruin the tips. Rinse it when you're done blending an area. Even times when I forgot to rinse the brush and it did dry all the way I could save the brush washing it in soap and water. The paint isn't stuck on the bristles quite like it would be on a normal brush if you're using it right :) For blending with oils I usually use a mop brush that is a tad more stiff by royal soft grip :)

    I have painted with oils for 35+ years and still suck at acrylics. 😂 i have starting doing pet portraits and there are too many hurdles with oils.. especially having to wait 3+ days in between layers! I'm trying to get better at acrylics because that's too dang long! 😂😂😂

    So interesting, never heard about this. Easily the most interesting video over the last year :) I do more acrylics on miniatures than canvas and now wonder if this technique could be transferred to that hobby. Never seen any of the best painters use it but looks like it should be possible. Just need a fine mist spray and I guess some small make up brushes for the smoothing.

    I decided to paint my notebook cover because I don't like it the way it is, and searched just for info for how much paint I'll need for that. And I found this video. Now I want to start painting with acrylics, buy a soft mist spray bottle, drink some red wine and play with my Cretan lyra (not with a shoe). No husband to correct though, and my dog is so sweet it never needs correcting (and I never would spray water towards an animal). No red wine in my home this moment. And it is midnight, so no lyra playing either, I'll let the neighbours sleep. So what can I do? Subscribe.

    Thank you so much for this video l. I have been working with watercolors for a while and want to step up my game. I was looking into oil painting but I believe that is too advanced for me as well as there are too many health risks involved. I wonder if acrylics don't require linseed oils or solvents etc. And how is the cleaning process with acrylic paints? I hope this is a non toxic alternative to painting. 💜

    Disciplining your husband with a spray bottle? TOO funny. Playing the guitar with a shoe? TOO funny...... PS: You are a good artist. I loved the techniques of smoothing the paint out. I use something very similar. I will look for "finer" misting spray bottles. I love oils, but the smell, the cure time is just a little too much for me. I have tried "MAX" paints and they work quite well (Oils that can be thinned with water). Personally my biggest "personal" grip is when i do fine work like a tree branch. You can see through it often. When you put a second coat down the branch loses it's sharpness. If all that makes sense. Anyway spray the husband down again. Speaking as a man, we need it sometimes!! 🙂

    Firstly thank you for the great tips and tutorials over the years they have helped tremendously! Now for a quick question something I’ve struggled with as far as blending acrylics And using brushes on damp canvas, how dry does your fluffy brush need to be(or stay) while actively working in a section so as not to start picking paint back up off the canvas.. if that makes sense?

  • @jeffhildreth9244

    I use acrylics so they do not look like oil.
    My techniques approximate egg tempera.. the brilliant, pre oil, method.
    Just an opinion, but I oil was the demise of the masterful painting prior;
    pre Botticelli.

    I used to use lot of water to keep my acrylics wet and blend with until I found out that degrades the paint. I switched to slow drying acrylics and medium but I'm super excited to try the mister, that way I can use this to play with all the colors I have. I'm assuming it just doesn't put out enough water to cause a problem. Also, saw in another comment and holy camoly how did I not know about USB airbrushes? I had a set up a long time ago complete with a big, loud, heavy air compressor and that's one of the reasons I've never bothered to try and get another one. I'm excited about that too now.

    • @Lachri
      @Lachri  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The idea that it degrades the paint is a long held myth. It doesn't hurt anything. It is somewhat less adhesive if you use a LOT of water, so if you're doing a heavy scrubbing technique over it it *might* lift a bit but once the painting is done and varnished, there is no trouble even if you used a TON of water. There is a video sharing a lot of false information about water and acrylics that had to turn off the comments because there was so much wrong with what she said. That video is extra annoying because it mislead so many artists.
      I saw the comment about the USB airbrush too! I hadn't heard of them before either! They sound interesting!

    that's so beautiful it kind of makes me hate ya just a little bit.. haha.
    i have a question. i just started painting.. the whole acrylic set up and shebang is what i asked for this Christmas. i'm a wildlife and landscape photographer and i want to paint my own photos. people ask to paint them all the time and it makes me jealous. i have no natural talent for painting like i had in my life for photography and piano. i went to college on a music scholarship because of piano. i'm a published photographer and i've won every contest i've ever entered (contests in my area, The Smokies, that i was interested in.. not huge national contests.) i'm a determined individual. so, all that being said, can you learn to paint like you do?.. or is it something you can learn but you're also kind of born with. i feel like i was born to play piano and be a photographer and that's why excelled at them. i just wonder how much of that played into me doing well with them? and i wonder if it'll keep me from ever being able to decently paint my own photos since i can't even draw stick people.
