    My biggest complaint with the current state of subwooders is so beautifully illustrated by the room you're shooting this video in: Look at all those speakers surrounding the listening area. They're all gorgeous in their own way. Every manufacturer of high end audio equipment goes out of their way to try some new engineering trick, puts their own spin on aesthetics, makes them stand out.
    Then it's time for a sub, and what do you get? Boof, have a cube. Or an elongated cube. Oh we have it in the same finish as our other speakers so it matches. Our tiniest subwoofer is the best because it will make your picky spouse happy.
    Where's the beauty? Where's the trademark appearance? Where's the sense of engineering and design adventure? Sealed cube. Ported cube. Oh ours is servo-controlled, nevermind that Yamaha was doing that in the 90s.
    I want an 8th order. I want a transmission line. I want a folded horn. Brand X's tower speakers are massive, and the design is radical yet elegant. Why is the sub a tiny cube? Gimme a huge subwoofer that's interesting to look at. Make it an architectural feature in my living room! Gimme a icosikaihenagon with 20 high excursion 5" drivers (yes I had to Google that word).
    We're not big-box-store drones haggling over a $130 install fee on a $1000 plastic HTIB system. Fuckin' charge me the audiophile tax to give me something interesting, I don't care. Just please, speaker industry: No. More. Cubes.

    Elipson is a legendary French company, serious and highly respected. Since its founding in 1938, it has provided top quality monitors for professional sound studios, Radio France, the major television networks. Its spherical designs with elliptical reflectors - hence the name Elipse Son (ellipsis sound) - designed in the 1940s, were not only sculptural and aesthetic but revolutionary in terms of sound production. They spherical speakers continue to be produced today with state of the art engineering technology. Hand assembled and overseen with rigorous quality control, Elipson's products are top tier and expensive even in France. With import duties and added profit margins for importation to the US, the price is evidently stratospheric. It may be best to shrug one's shoulders and to think of Elision as a luxury brand comparable to Gitzo tripods. While one may never have heard the name, professional photographers certainly know it - even those who cannot afford the luxury of buying one.

    Glad this video came out, currently deciding between 3 subwoofers: the SVS Micro 3000, Martin Logan Dynamo 600X, and the Rel T/5X. Need a small form factor as this sub will be going in my office and needs to fit under the desk.

    Sub crawl may or may not be the starting point but to really dial in a sub placement you need REW. In fact, you probably don't need to crawl at all, you can just figure out roughly where in the room a sub is likely to work (in your case, a corner placement) and then run some frequency sweeps and see where you wound up. Probably easier to inch the sub around than put it 5 feet up in a couch.

    • @Jon-nz3dm
      @Jon-nz3dm ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I'd prefer to just spend $80 on the UMIK-1 and avoid all of the possible madness of a sub crawl. Then I have a proper mic for doing all sorts of in-room measurements anyways. Zeos doesn't seem to measure anything, unfortunately.

The *good 8 inch subs produce a very different kind of bass when compared to 10, 12 or 15...I would say they're much better for music.
