The most common piece of advice that is given to new RV owners is to go out to a parking lot and practice backing up around cones. That is good and all but HOW should you setup the cones???
The maneuvers in this video are setup to teach control of the trailer, and build confidence in the driver. The best drivers are confident and relaxed.
This link shows diagrams of how to setup each maneuver. Yes these are the same backing maneuvers used to test CDL drivers. If new truck drivers can parallel park a semi truck, YOU can parallel park an RV.

no no no no no.... everything about this video is completely and utterly wrong. when teaching the spouse how to back a camper or a trailer there must be yelling, screaming, and crying. and always of course accompanied with some damage and the wife stomping off and not talking to you for the whole weekend. this way you have a peaceful weekend. Other are good but not this helpful, they are more basic guides and tips. I like to watch them to see how well they are made and give my advice as needed from my own experience as a truck driver.
Must watch for first time towers. First watched this video 1.5 years ago. It was a big help to me at the time. My wife and I had just purchased our first travel trailer, a 36ft behemoth. It gave me the fundamentals to have the confidence in backing it up. I have even used the parallel parking tips (didn’t think I could pull it off) to park at a campsite. I have come back and watched it again a few times for a refresher when I know I have a difficult camping spot to back into. TIP: I always scout out our camping spots on google earth to know what we are heading into.

Same here my husband would take us camping and now that he isn’t here anymore my kids still want to camp as a mom I want kids to keep those memories alive I have learned to hook up the trailer and how to drive it forward lol but back it in to my driveway I still can’t I have to call for help but I need to learn it’s so frustrating to the point we’re I want to cry and quit so here I am watching videos I hope I can get it soon 😣

Thanks to you and this fabulous video, I bought my orange cones before I picked up my trailer. I not only used them for practice, but I also use them on site. They have red lights on top to help guide me when it’s too dark to see my obstacles. Since it’s just me and the dog, I needed this video to give the knowledge and confidence to safely maneuver my trailer.

My husband told me that I'm following the trailer, that helped me rethink how I was backing up. This video is a major help. Mostly because we don't want to be told by our significant other how to drive but it's okay to listen to a total stranger, haha.

That is funny.. I have had, at least, 5 people ask me to do a video showing how to back up an RV..
I don't have the time to capture and explain something in an informative manner that just comes naturally to me.. I learned my trailer towing and backing skills in a WWII era 5 ton wrecker, without power steering, backing a 30kw Generator trailer through 300 yards of forest after towing it through some of the most narrowest German streets I have ever driven on.. All this happened on 5 hours of sleep in a 50 hour period when I was only 19.. Talk about "baptism by fire".. It could have been worse, At least the rain had stopped and the sun was up..

UPDATE !!! -- I was forced to use most of these techniques at various points on a 17-hour drive with my 24-foot sailboat-on-trailer. On the way, rest stops, gas stations, toll booths, pulling over to check the straps and mounts, wrong turns, narrow mountain passages, super croweded gas stations, manuvering into a dark boat hanger at 2 a.m. in the morning -- every horror you can imagine. These tips saved my pretty man ass !!! (I was also hauling with a semi-vintage convertible and had no damage to this old classic either.) Thank you Wandering Wagners. This video is an absolute MUST for anyone driving an RV, trailer or even thinking about doing so. FIVE STARS !!!

OMG, you have no idea how this is the first video that I have seen in which your hands are at the top and not bottom for backing in, which always more sense to me and seeing you do it has made me feel so much better. or you could just hold the bottom of the steering wheel and turn it in the direction of where you want the tail of trailer to go.
@ David Wilson : Holding the bottom of the steering wheel is the more usual advice, but not so easy when you are twisted round in your seat.
Well, I wouldn't know that as I have had a neck surgery and back surgery. I use mirrors more than trying to twist around. Even if you do twist around to look you can still start at the bottom and that way you know for sure which way to turn the wheel. Think in most peoples minds they want to turn wheel towards where they want to go rather than trying to think opposite. Just my opinion. I know it helped me when I first started towing. Now I do it both ways.
I always messed up with the RV and utility trailer until I watched this video. That single statement made it click, well done!
I love this I remember people saying use the bottom of the wheel and that never works in my brain. This method of steering toward the problem is much better.

This is so clear and easy to follow. I'm a SCUBA instructor and was trained to teach dive skills clearly as you do here. It's no small task to teach a complex skill in such a clear manner. Great video. regarding the radio, my father gave me some great advice in their use. Give your spotter their radio, set the channels the same as necessary, when you start backing, turn your radio off. Works quite well and avoids numerous problems that could occur in the relationship with your spotter.

Before getting my camper may 2019 i was mortified about the idea of backing it up. i watched this video a couple of times before getting it, and it made my life so easy. since then we have travel more then 9000 miles and for the most part i have no issues backing up with our TT, unless it's just really dark outside. you really did.. I get to pick up my 29 foot TT tomorrow, and i'l be solo, as I drive it off the lot, and to my RV storage, and I'm sure once I get there, i'll have to corner-back the thing into a spot, and having never done it, the perspectives, and showing the drivers mirrors, and the exterior.. is SO SO helpful to newbies like me, so again, thank you! because all the videos I've found until yours has been a 20+ year RV sales veteran, backing a trailer up in 30 secs, teaching you nothing in the process
Silverbreex, now a days with camera systems abound, you could buy a 4 channel system or two and put some cameras on the RV itself to hlp assist with backing with a rear view and right side view. for some ideas on mounting look up *5th wheel double towing* by *Tiverton* it was posted in 2012 with a system he DIY together, but you can find resonably priced cameras. While I do not suggest screwing or bolting to the RV itself, you can always find really good magnets and suction cups to mount to metal and solid surfaces like the skin of the RV or a window (inside/behind or outside). Not only that they double as a security system.

Wow. This is so helpful. Just ordered my new Lance travel trailer, be here in about 6 weeks and I’m that solo woman who’s NEVER backed up anything! Have been terrified about this and the learning curve involved. Your teaching was so very easy to understand. Now I just need to scout a church parking lot or school or business big enough so that I can practice. Wonder where I get cones to borrow to practice? Thank you so much for helping me see that this is doable, and I won’t need to jump outta my truck at each campground (going full time nomad retirement) and find me someone to do this for me!

Love the video. Very helpful. One of the most annoying things I've found at campgrounds are the "helpful" neighbors who offer to be your spotter and then give you all the wrong instructions and argue with you about the best way to get into the spot. Great advice to just avoid spotters altogether -- including spouses. That's just a recipe for disaster.
Just the opposite experience here when I didn't know how to back. I remember being in a very tight spot with vehicles parked on both sides of the road in front of the RV's. This one guy came out and knew exactly from outside the trailer how to give me instructions on how to turn my wheels to get it in.
Brilliant! He explained and demonstrated what to do with your steering wheel, which is what beginners struggle with. He explained pivot points. Nicely done! Thank you for explaining the ‘how’ and ‘why’.

Man, I'm so glad I found this video. I haven't seen one that goes into this depth on teaching how to backup a trailer yet. Just make sure you looked for posted signs before using if they mention requiring contact for permission to use said lot, not all are friendly enough to just let you use at will. If you like check in with trucking companies nearby and see if they got lot space and would let you come in to practice, or if they offer workshops even.

We took an 8-hour RV class from our local Commercial Driver School, which has been hugely beneficial. Your video is a great refresher and provides some additional insights based on your experience. Thank you, awesome video!

Good the read someone had taken time to get training from a formal school, I often get asked by those looking into towing RV what to do I recommend they look at some non company schools as some like you found one do offer side courses for RV ers at a discount since it is a non CDL you got. The school I went to the head coach told us that one guy actually took the course just to drive a Semi-towed FLOAT in parades, if they are close enough I recommend the independent T-T training school I went to.
I used to be an OTR CDL driver. Ir's been about 4 years since I've been off the road. This was a very nice touch up video and should help many.
I do like that last part about "having a plan". Every dock or spot I backed into I would survey the layout real quick and get point of references (POR) on where to line the trailer axles and such. In docks with concrete, it was nice to use the expansion joints as a POR. Rocks and debris can be used too.
One point I would like to add: when you got out to look (and always get out to look) at the distance to continue backing, you can look at the trailer shadow in conjunction to the backing spot for distance reference during the day. Even if the shadow is cast at an angle, notice the angle and look at the shadow as reference. Saved me many times.
Fortunately for both my wife and I we have had little to no problems backing up our unit. We had 26ft and then 34ft bumper pulls until we just upgraded to a 40' Motorhome. So much easier backing up the motorhome but really had little issues with this important task although we have seen countless people struggling. Great info that should be very helpful to others. ~Bradley

Great video. You really did a great of explaining something that comes naturally to some of us. It’s hard to put into words but you did it while filming and backing up. I pull a trailer 5 days a week and sometimes on Saturday for 35 years. It’s harder for me to back up without my trailer hooked up lol!! Great technical video. Two thumbs up!!

I love this. I recently purchased my first travel trailer and I'm single and plan to travel on my own. Every video I saw started with "You have to have walkie talkies and a spotter". Uhh.. well, Unless I can train my cat to spot that isn't going to happen. I took the trailer out to an empty parking lot a few days ago and you are right.. I had no idea WHAT to practice. It wasn't horrible, but I still have a ways to go. The tips you gave made me think about it different and some things really clicked. I can't wait to get back out there and practice some more!

As an experienced truck driver myself since late 2003, very good work demonstrating and use of multi angle.
That reverse lane change is something I have done time to time when I had to get into a dock with a wall in the way or a dock that require that with parallel parking challenge.
I have recommended to many who asked that you can call up a Tractor Trailer Driving School (non company owned or run) or if they look up the lessons online and there are many each with the standard FMCSA outline but differing illustrations and set of instructions either the same or slightly different. One has just not these two choices but as you show here you can always call up a depot/warehouse and ask if you can utilize their lot with permission and can even provide you with cones if needed so you do not have to buy a few dozen of your own.
Also another tip I give is lok up wireless cameras, NuCam from Nuvending is a nice one with wifi and radio connectivity (up to 150 foot range) and use an app on the mobile device to get the picture where as with others would require their own monitor if not optional mobile app. Pretty much any camera system you get gives you the option to record so you can use them while in transit for insurance purposes if the need arises in this type of situation. But mainly helpful for covering those pesky BLIND spots, especially the right side when backing that side's direction. Also useful in lieu of a spotter with questionable trust.
Good tips from me is when turning is; counter-clockwise steering = trailer right swing: clockwise = left swing. As you also showed one you got it swinging the direction you want you make Small/short NOT Large/wide corrections as the trailer maneuvers into the place you want it to go.
Yes you mention "GOAL". Something I see few Do NOT do, especially when their is overhead obstacles, namely utility wires.
Couple other lessons just for some extra fun; Reverse figure eight (two 10 to 20 foot circles of at least six cones spaced 25 feet apart), and reverse snaking which is basically slalom backwards (cones spaced at least 25 feet apart in a straight line or for added challenge zig zag with up to 10 foot apart spacing), and lastly a reverse u-turn (this one has quite a bit of playfulness since you can bac up at full available angle or anywhere between straight and max angle to trailer.
You are welcome to try these out and video them and post it to show others what they are about, as i said they are not very useful but help you get a better handle on your trailer dynamics.
These lessons are good for all types of trailer. And practice at first is helpful to get started, its the times when you use this practice you get the Real Life Training of these lessons.

For those wondering the best places to mount camera's on trailer at the least:
Sides: For Trailer at any height facing rearward and much like side rear view mirror make the side sort of disappear out of view but not by much so you have a broader view and can see how close side obstacles get when maneuvering. Best to make sure the picture is horizontal and NOT sideways-vertical and do remember it may not be left is left and right is right on monitor or screen, so after mounting take a bit to get used to using it before going on the road and remember to keep using the vehicles side rear view mirrors. You can always readjust the mirror up and down angle to what you prefer to see.
Rear of trailer: Up high looking downward with bumper almost in view, but it will not offer any above view for any overhead obstacles unless mounted near the top and had a wide vertical view. Down low even under the bumper set back a bit as these two would offer best view for seeing how close to an object you are. If you mount it midway you will have certain above and below visual issues unless its a true wide vertical and horizontal view camera and also will limit your view on overhead obstacles to the height of your trailer including roof mounted equipment. You can even go with two cameras, one above and the other below.
For the vehicle you are towing with you mount the side view more to the front and looking back like it is a side rear view mirror and again the side just out of view. As for rear view you can mount above or below the brake/cargo light but make sure not it does not block that light, and aimed downward into the bed a bit, or you can bumper mount it as well or add a second one on the bumper or below it for checking things out on the trailer if you hear some strange noise.
Most camera systems are multi-channel be it two, three or four cameras on one monitor, you can buy two and the cost along with a recording system as well will help you save more than that in insurance when an accident happens. Just make sure if you get one for the trailer that you can also use it as a security system to monitor for safety at a camp site or when it is stored and not being used. Best to go with two four channel systems so if you only use 3 you have an extra cam in case you need it. Just make sure with your manufacturer warranty if you will void it by mounting with screws, otherwise I suggest in a really good suction cup system or gluing a mounting plate to screw the camera mount to. If it is a metallic surface you can get some strong magnets but watch you do not scratch your paint unless you got paint protection film covering it it will still mount but wont leave noticeable scratches. Use your best judgement when mounting, and if you mount to the frame you could even use zip-tie to also secure the camera as an added measure to your primary mounting method in case it fails.
Some of you I am sure can be extra creative and actually find a way to place the side views on the front at the corner and aim it rear ward to get the camera more out of the way.
Hope you did not find this too boring or long and otherwise quite helpful in giving you some ideas to help you when you go about camping on holiday/vacation.

Check out *5th wheel double towing* by *Tiverton* as its a video from 2012 showing his camera set ups that i am talking about, as I said now a days we have better camera systems with multi channel capability. Yes you can even mount the camera inside on a window with suction cups. Most modern camera systems are reasonably priced, but Tiverton used different cameras and DIYed them to his rig pretty nicely.
My suggestions for extra skill building fun may be off I am using the measure of typical 40 foot trailer so some adjustments may be needed, as I said just a basic guideline as they are not part of truck driving test, they are something I did with others who attended an outside workshop at a company first worked for.
When you are about ready to do the stuff I sugested, let me know here in the comments if you want further info, when I did those courses the told me to do what i would normally do in the standard ones, keep close to the cones with a few feet. The figure 8 also doubles as a reverse U turn lesson which you can do either direction and minimum distance between circles from edge to edge is 20 feet.
I see after reading others comments I also replied to many of them my opinion as well, not meaning to step on anyone's "toes" that it turns out you been towing trailers for 18 years professionally and on the farm before then, and are now an instructor which kind of shows in this video that i did not realize before.

When I got my CDL, the best backing advice I ever got was "knock it back". Just like you say, (5:00 mark), with your hand at the top, pretend you are knocking it back when you see the trailer come out in one mirror or the other. I used to struggle with backing up, until I learned to "knock it back". Now, I can back all day long. Your "11 O'Clock/1 O'Clock" advice is priceless. A great video!

The one ting I didn't hear you say is {Take your time and go SLOW} you can't back a trailer quickly. But you are absolutely correct on the GOAL Rule.
Here's another way to help get the thinking of backing up a trailer and that is when you are driving forward you have your hands at 10 & 2 Right? / well backing up a trailer have your hands at 8 & 4 O clock. move the the left the trailer will go left - move the the right the trailer will go to the right. But most important is GO - S L O W ! when backing up.
I sometimes see guys have there hands at the top of the wheel and back up and get in jams cause they think the trailer will respond in the direction that they are turning when the trailer starts to respond the opposite.
The reference point of the trailer being at 11o'clock or 1 o'clock position are very great point to learn. Great info!! Thanks

This was the first video I watched while I was waiting to pick up my travel trailer. This video is invaluable. I have pushed/pulled/backed F-15s into parking spots during my 21 year career in the Air Force. But as I found out, I can easily jack knife a trailer versus/over a big fighter jet. I still watch this video to this day just to refresh my memory on the wheel turning and the angle of travel my tow vehicle needs to stay within in order to not lose control of the tracking of the trailer.

Back in the day, I was told to put my hand at the 6 o'clock on the wheel while backing up , that way all I had to do was turn to which ever side you wanted the trailer to go , if left, turn the wheel up (towards the left) or the opposite for right.
I like that technique about turning to 11 o'clock or 1 o"clock and then straighten up.

+Dslsmoke DP that 6 o'clock position is a tried and true method. I like teaching it from the top of the wheel and steering towards the "problem" because if you can back in a straight line, you can back in anywhere!

Yeah putting your hand at the area above the 3 and 9 marks you have to counter turn to the direction you want to go or for more easier you just the points below the 3 and 9. Or as I use this; Counter clockwise to go right and clockwise to go left when starting to back from a straight line up.

I back up my trailers with my hand on the bottom (6 o'clock) and it works too. I even teach it this way. Use 7 o'clock and 5 o'clock for position to straighten up. This a wonderful video for learning!!

Was looking for a video like yours to point a friend/new RV'er to watch & learn. Good stuff. I've been RV'in a long time, taught many how to do this too. Way back as a 10 yr ole kid my Uncle taught me how -- he was a pro at this, worked in heavy equip. He said instead of holding top of stearing wheel and thinking " to go right turn left, etc" - he said hold the bottom of the steering wheel -- then when you look in your mirror & you want the trailer to go left, your hand on the bottom of the steering wheel goes left & it goes exactly where you want it. Explaining using the bottom of the steering wheel is "less confusing". Like your point of looking at the tires -- no one is every going to do that. Try it -- hold the bottom of the steering wheel -- so many folks I've taught always thank me & my Uncle for that tip. Again, thanks for taking the time to make your video's.
I was a truck driver for 16+ years and have been teaching truck driving at a CDL training facility for the past 6 and my method out performs the bottom of the wheel buy a lot, which is why I teach this method👍🏻 thanks for the feedback!

This is a great video even 7 years later it all applies. I am a solo traveler and when I go to back into a site I usually put out cones to help me locate the site since many aren't very well marked. I GOAL a lot! AND I don't hurry. If you are behind me you will just have to wait for me to get into my site. AND don't even think about getting out and giving me your 2 cents.

This video is so perfect. I got my first trailer and watching this video makes me confident. I can't believe that using markers, combined with mirrors will do the trick. It's better than relying with a backup camera.

I am one of the volunteer dads for the local high school marching band (pit-pops) and we all have to learn how to drive a two axle trailer about the same length (your demonstrating in the video). The trailer has all of the marching band instruments. Your instructions backing up from the right lane into the left land and subsequently driving straight back were well described. Summary in my mind...3 mission critical segments and angles to line up prior to backing straight in. This is key for us volunteers because there are a lot of of other buses and long trailers that we have to parallel park next to ....when there is a big marching band competition and the trailer lot is packed! OMG! This video is amazing. The best I’ve seen thus far. I’m very new to driving a 32 ft gooseneck flat bed. I’m proud of what I’ve done so far with backing.
