I met Lucinda at Mountain Stage in Charleston, WV and a friend on mine and her and her band went to the Marriott and sat around and talked for couple hours-she is truly a fine person and sooo talented and a kick band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Lucinda Williams central brilliance is her ability to define a very strict sound and hire badass players; the guitar work here can make a blind man see.
I just heard about Lucinda Williams today from my Spanish teacher... and OMG-ish! I totally fell in love with her style of music as soon as I heard it! She's amazing!
Jim Christie is so tasty on the drums and he is only using one hand. His left hand plays the shaker throughout the entire song. What a killin' band! Doug Pettibone is always great with Lucinda.
I try to get all my friends to listen cause of course they have never heard of her! How do you not pick up Rolling Stone and not find out what is hot and what is not? That is how I bought Car Wheels on a Gravel Road! It's the voice though that gets me! Beautiful!
This is clearly a great song witch I like very much due to the intense emotion Lucinda shows on stage. The first time I have heard that song was as part of a live version of the song "Joey" performed by Grace Potter & The Nocturnals. For those who still do not know Grace Potter look at the "Stop The Bus" video on you tube.
She performed this @ JazzFest 07...and rocked the house...I think Lu...might have some anger issues with all of her X's...but somehow they become the inspiration for her great lyrics and music...ladies..can you relate?
such a fine intro ...antipasta ...spiced and enough sleeky oil to put a bit of taste into the finely diced cabbage ....that introduces the rest of the wailing main meal ...beer or red wine juice ...it all works ..
Doesn't hurt to have Dough Pettibone on lead.. Last time I saw her she had her band Buick 6 and they just tore the house down. Small club, it was awesome.
Look, I love Lucinda Williams as much as the next guy, but here I am duty bound to say that her lead guitar player, That Guy, is a monster of the kind we seen once in along generation. Let us pray that he has children.
It is to Williams credit that she finds such A level players [ and takes forever to finish a studio album] but here I have to say that Pettibone rises past my 2 heroes, Tom Velaine and Dave Rawlins with a natural ease.
CHECK OUT GRACE POTTER! she is like a younger lucinda with the same soul and edge to her music. not to mention her amazing songwriting talent! whilst ur at it check me out too :P
@nexthoudini maybe for the same reason you were carried to term. At least ONE person thought it was a good idea. Only difference is that Lucinda was right!!!
heard this song on KPFT 90.1 Pacifica Houston, had to look it up to see who sang it! i am now a dedicated LW fan :-)
Just hearing this song this very moment. But I grew up listening to KPFT and KTRU in Houston. I even DJed on KTRU briefly.
Lucinda, she is the real deal. There is not another sound out there like hers.

Lucinda is a master of simplicity. She says so much with so few words. You got no right to take my joy, I want it back. Yes.
Lucinda Williams central brilliance is her ability to define a very strict sound and hire badass players; the guitar work here can make a blind man see.

Jim Christie is so tasty on the drums and he is only using one hand. His left hand plays the shaker throughout the entire song. What a killin' band! Doug Pettibone is always great with Lucinda.
Lead guitar player smokes the guitar every time he plays...
I try to get all my friends to listen cause of course they have never heard of her! How do you not pick up Rolling Stone and not find out what is hot and what is not? That is how I bought Car Wheels on a Gravel Road! It's the voice though that gets me! Beautiful!
THE BAND!!!! THE BAND!!!! I wish she still has this guy on guitar.
This is an awesome performance. I love that the audience waited until the very last note to applaud.
Absolutely love Doug Pettibone !!!

Doug Pettibone's guitar is a James Trussart "Steel Deville". It's a true work of art as is his performance.

That guitar player is something of a monster,,,enjoy the distant connections you mentioned as well. And here I add Ribot, Verlaine and Adrain Belew.
She's a force of nature!
I enjoyed this live version, Bettye LaVette also does a superb cover of this song.
@MrKim2288 Thanks for the info on Doug Pettibone, he's great!

such a fine intro ...antipasta ...spiced and enough sleeky oil to put a bit of taste into the finely diced cabbage ....that introduces the rest of the wailing main meal ...beer or red wine juice ...it all works ..

Her band reminds me of the Magic Band!
@jakollee Doug Pettibone. One of the greats. Looks like he may be playing a Zematis.
Look, I love Lucinda Williams as much as the next guy, but here I am duty bound to say that her lead guitar player, That Guy, is a monster of the kind we seen once in along generation. Let us pray that he has children.
great song. i can relate
very good Work ain't that the Truth
You're gonna want to put your SPURS on before she launches you out the door with I change the locks...
@MrKim2288 Thanks for the info on Doug Pettibone!
That drummer really holds it down.
@42smitty42
Yes, Doug Pettibone. Sorry to see him go.
Doug Pettibone..nuff said.
Can anyone give me the details on this concert? I'd like to watch it all.
LIVE AT AUSTIN CITY LIMITS IS ABOUT AS LUCINDA AS YOU CAN GET!
I'm pretty sure Doug Pettibone is playing a James Trussart SteelDeville guitar. Google it.
Mystery solved. His name is Doug Pettibone :-)
@Comofan100 Your f'n loss my friend! Leaves more of her for the rest of us!!
If they were smart, they'd have 'Lucinda Williams' night on Idol, and have everyone singing Lucinda Williams songs. But they're not smart.
rawkin !
So you don't hear LA Woman in there?
It's all good.
PINEOLA BELONGS IN THERE 2!...
Isn't he playing Bo Ramsey's contribution to this song???
Seems like some of the comments don't understand the various meanings of "Joy."
Just fuckin rockin
I believe that the monster playing guitar is Doug Pettibone and yes we should all pray he has guitar lovin' kids.
@jakollee Doug Pettibone i think.
Wow who's on that guitar? Can anyone tell me his name?
Does anyone know who the lead guitarist is, and what kind of guitar he's playing?
Who's the guitar player?.....Anybody?.......
steve little Doug Pettibone ;-)
She's not sick as far as I know. Her sister is...Or are you thinking of Victoria Williams...?
What kinda guitar is that?
James Trussart
love u Lucinda... but I can assure you that there is zero joy in West Memphis.
I could see ol' John Lennon himself putting this song on one of his albums.
Bit of a doors thing at the end
Sheryl Crow WISHES she was Lucinda Williams.
It is to Williams credit that she finds such A level players [ and takes forever to finish a studio album] but here I have to say that Pettibone rises past my 2 heroes, Tom Velaine and Dave Rawlins with a natural ease.
Steel Deville
The music sounds a lot like The Doors
There is no joy in Slidell!
And the guitar is .... WHO ?????
CHECK OUT GRACE POTTER! she is like a younger lucinda with the same soul and edge to her music. not to mention her amazing songwriting talent! whilst ur at it check me out too :P
If you don't hear the similarities, you don't know squat about music.
Doug Pettibone is god
I believe he stretches out like no one else in the business....I will seek his glorious noise elsewhere.

My Bad. Didn't know I stumbled into a spelling bee.
don't like the song , don't like her voice too scruffy, and DON't like the band too modern.
