If I'm going to use them in places where I'm not familiar with depth, I'll tend to tie them at 10ft/3m. That way when you get to the bank you simply cut off what you don't need and tie a new loop to the top. If I'm making some for a familiar venue, I'll make them at the depth I know + 2ft, because things change (water levels rise etc..) so again you just cut off what you don't need and tie a new loop. Hope that helps Stevan.

whips with flick tips you usually set up for small fish to hand - so a 3 metre with a flick tip you would have your line from the tip to about 10-40 cm from the base (rig length would be about 2.6 to 2.9 metres (preference), it's about speed fishing) so that when you swing the fish it goes straight to your hand and you unhook and flick your rig back out quickly.
If you elasticate your whips you might lose at least 30 cm as you wouldn't be using a flick tip and as such elasticating your number two or a cut dow 1 section, elasticated whip you would probably set up a rig in order to land your fish so rig is depth orientated. Of course, you can set up an elasticated to hand set up, more readily for small fish but enabling you to catch and land larger fish (elasticated to hand is dual purpose) - search for long whip on youtube.

just wondering, if only an meter or so, how would you cope with 2 meters for the depth?

Wrap the line around the bottom nail and put hook on top nail. This gives you double the line to shot.
