I was once in a room with Eve and several other people after having been an ardent fan for many years. I'm not normally starstruck but I really wanted her to know how much her writing meant to me so I nudged her and indicated I wanted to speak to her. After engaging with some other people, she came up to me and I told her how much I loved her work, that I hoped she'd never stopped writing. This was in the mid-eighties before the fire. After I told her how much I loved her work, she sighed with noticable relief and said, "I though you were going to tell me I slept with your husband!" and we both laughed because of all the women in Hollywood she was probably the only one who hadn't. At the time I told her this, I had been divorced from him for several years. I still adore Eve and her work, she was a woman beofre her time and set the mold for all the brilliant, independent creative women who have come after. RIP, dearest Eve. Thank you for everything.
Hollywood anecdote: 1981, I go to the Rainbow with my pals. We get drunk, wild. My friends pick up on two black chicks and bring them back to the house in Los Feliz where we were staying. They party with these girls til all hours in the outdoor jacuzzi. Next day owner of the house, one of the world's great womanizers, yells at one of the guys saying it was inappropriate to have these black girls in the jacuzzi, loud, drinking, et al, and finishes with "this is a nice neighborhood." To which my friend replies, "A nice neighborhood. Christ almighty, two doors up the Mansons slaughtered the Lo Bianacos, and you call this a nice neighborhood. Get real!" THAT is L.A.
