Germantown and Martin Luther King High Schools were bitter rivals for over 40 years. This past year, a budget crisis caused Philadelphia to lay off over 4000 employees and close two dozen schools, including Germantown High. Now Germantown must merge with their former rival, King. Against overwhelming odds, a 27-year old first time head coach and a new principal fight to inspire young men from difficult circumstances to come together and lift each other toward a better future.
What's not mentioned in the documentary is when King was first built Germantown & King actually served as 1 school with King having 9th & 10th graders & Germantown having 11th & 12th graders. After 1975 the schools split & became their own institutions respectively. Also what made it such a heated rivalry was that Germantown was in HAINES ST territory & KING was in SUMMERVILLE territory & both gangs were at war. So if you were from any of those hoods & you crossed that line there was a price to pay. Only through sports there was a little peace but a rivalry was formed. There was nothing like the G'TOWN/KING THANKSGIVING 🏈 game.
“WE COULD BE KING” is a documentary from Dick’s Sporting Goods about two Philadelphia high school football teams forced to merge due to lack of funding.
