Thank you! Last winter was especially brutal up here in Northern MN - we went through 6 cords and probably could have used another as we could have been burning well into May. This year I grabbed 8 to make sure I wouldn't run out.
good job. I build these on a pad of pea gravel with a polyethylene vapor barrier. If we stack wood on pallets in Maryland, termites would infest the pile before we used the firewood
Thanks, Matt. Luckily, we don’t have to worry about termites in northern Minnesota. I haven’t gotten down to the bottom of the pile quite yet, but should in the next month or so. I’m interested to see what the bottom layer looks like and if it seasoned properly.
I found your vertical stacking style to only go about four feet high. After that they get wobbly and do fall down. I've been stacking my split ash this week. this morning my wife asked what that bang was. I already knew. Outside the house one of the stacks fell over. It was about 5 1/2 feet high. too high. I'm getting pallets from the local farm. They will give them to me so it's easy. I'm going to build a Holzhausen in the back corner of the yard. I can get a lot of firewood stacked in a smaller area.
I have found that, too! I’ve had my vertical stack fall twice so far this year. My buddy suggested putting a sheet/section of plywood about halfway up the stack connecting two then continuing on. It’s supposed to make the stack much more stable. My holzhausen, however, has never tipped over. I have limited space and I’m trying to get 8 cords stacked this year so my first one is about 8’ high and holding steady!
Go get a husky 372xp or 550 maybe a 562 572,gotta love the 3 series though and start dropping your own trees and then before you know it you are 5 to 50 saws deep and have a addiction you never thought was possible or could happen
During the oil crisis sometime during the 1970's, was when my parents got rid of the oil heater. Probably says something about the difference between an importing nation like Australia, and the land of plenty where you live.
No, you pronounced it right with an F. Literally means pile of wood (Haufen means pile). The reason people get confused is because in the old school German alphabet the lowercase f looks very much like an s. Futhermore, calling it Holzhausen, like a wood house, kind of makes sense, except -hausen is nonsensical in German, which is also why people get confused.
Nice work! Great video. Such a good feeling when you have a bunch of wood going into the winter.

That’s the next step, for sure! I would love to be able to harvest my own

We certainly are fortunate to have a wealth of resources available to us right in our backyard
8:45 for the beginning of the how to
Geez thanks.

Thanks for the clarification, that’s super helpful!
is that a Pendleton flannel shirt?
Nope! Close though. Woolrich Buffalo shirt jacket
Level does not matter. Vertical is where it's at. Get a bit of string and a steel nut and that's sorted.
