    Better than the other tutorials than I've seen. Your'e patient, thorough, and easy to grasp. While the others I have seen speak to fast, don't show the shortcuts and things just disappear off of their screen. Love ya man and thanks for the video.

    ctrl+shift+A will deselect all. If there is just a small piece you want to deselect, then you need to use the negative select option, found in the tool options for all selection tools.

  • @ScottishAtheist
    @ScottishAtheist 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    The quick mask is probably by favorite of the selection tools. Using gradients on it to get a faded in effect for filters and things is so useful.
    My question is: Is there a way to create a selection, say the shape of a cross, that you can then move about and cut things out in that shape, but not just a single use, but something you can keep coming back to like a cookie cutter?
    Thanks

    That was a pretty useful 19 to 20 minutes. Thank you!
    I've started using Gimp after having used Photoshop for a number of years. I was actually quite surprised to find out that Gimp (and Inkscape) are as good and capable as they are . . . and they're totally free.
    I've been doing some image cutting-out the past few days and wanted to know if Gimp had a feature where selected areas can be additionally marked off by a translucent color, which I believe you can do with Photoshop. So I was quite happy to discover the Quick Mask Tool that you demonstrate in your video, although it would be nice if you could reverse the function so that what is already is selected is covered in translucent color. That was the main thing I was looking for, but you went on to show how you can use the paintbrush tool to go in and deselect little "crumbs" that were missed in the selection. There's something in Photoshop, I forget what it's called, but you select it and it searches for non-selected crumbs based on a pixel width setting you select, and it finds and deselects them for you. I don't know if Gimp has this, but what I was doing previously was to first make a selection, then select the expand selection command and then the contract selection command to get the selection back to the original (if it does get you back to the original selection). What this double maneuver does sort of do is get rid of some or all of the crumbs. But this Quick Mask + Paintbrush combo you can use in Gimp, which you demonstrate, were quite happily received.
    Then there are the Smart Scissors Tool and the Foreground Select Tool which thankfully you include in the video. Photoshop has something akin to Smart Scissors but I was never overly impressed with it. Maybe they've improved the function, and maybe I didn't know how to operate it optimally. I was impressed by how you additionally can drag the nodes made by Smart Scissors to readjust the selection. Your demonstration of the Smart Scissors tool will definitely have me trying that out, as well as the Foreground Select Tool. That could come in quite useful and save me some time.
    Doesn't hurt to hear a video narrated in a mellifluous and articulate-ish Received Pronunciaton-esque English (whether it's Aussie, Kiwi, South African or something from Merry Old England--I'm no authority on these dialects). At one point I was expecting you to use the word "contiguous"--to distinguish between the Fuzzy Select and the Color Select Tool, and was even saying the word out loud for you to say it, which you didn't end up doing. I guess contiguous is not a word a whole lot of people will know. It took me a few months to get that word embedded in my brain. Maybe you can save it for another video.
    If I have this right Fuzzy Select selects contiguous areas and Color Select selects non-contiguous areas.
    Enjoyed this useful bit of video, thank you once again.

    I have not used GIMP much but just dwonloaded and installed 2.8. I was an intermediate user of Adobe PS 4.0 and I may have an answer for you.
    First, you need to be sure you selected the correct layer to paint over image/picture. OR...you need to flatten two or more layers with one layer being the object/picture you selected.

    great, finally a video I can understand about selection tools! I always wanted to try gimp, but its complexity is on the basics, at least to me, I am very plug and play in my life and so never really took the time to learn, so I have been using paint with devotion, dear god! I hope there is more to keep the learning, or a orderer list to follow? cheers!

    Are you still answering questions?. My question is with the "marching ants" I need to make a part of what is selected curve how do I select that part and curve it? Which selection tool do I use that will allow me to do so? I'm trying to design a shirt for a virtual world and I'm using a template of an upper body image, On the neckline I need to bring the neckline down AFTER I have selected the outer perimeter of the template. Thank you for this video you have provided it's very informative

      I agree that it would be nice to know what specific action was taken to do things.
      If you verbalized everything it would probably be cumbersome. I've never seen this but if you could have a keyboard / mouse routine that displayed down in the corner what key in was pressed or an enlaged image of what tool was clicked on (maybe with the coordinates of where the click was, then one could go back an figure out.
      Some software development might be involved but it sure would be great.

    Coming from Photoshop here. Have known about Gimp for a very long time, but never really used it because the UI bugs me. I hate that it doesn't have the selection and direct selection tools like in photoshop. That non-marching ants line around the image that looks like a selection also annoys me. But, I'm here to learn about Gimp and finally give it a chance.

    Jackson, it seems on all the forums I've visited everyone has the same problem I do with GIMP 2.8 and I think you're the man with the answer. How do you deselect a tool on a Mac when you are done with it in GIMP 2.8? I hope you can help: thanks.

    • @JacksonBates
      @JacksonBates  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, I am only a man, rather than THE man. I also don't use a Mac, so no idea how to deselect a tool. Do you mean you just want to stop using the current tool (like the paint brush) or that you want to create deselected portions of an already selected area? For example, do you have a circle selection you want to make a crescent shape from by deselecting part of the image? In the first instance, just select something else, like the move tool. In the latter, there's a shortcut key in windows (ctrl or shift or alt...don't remember which), or you can switch to quick mask view and edit the area with regular paint and erasing tools. Sorry to not have a Mac specific idea for you.

    • @keithgardner7978
      @keithgardner7978 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jackson Bates That's quite alright I simply appreciate your attempt to help. My actual question was relating to the first scenario; stop using the current tool "without" selecting another. Although you're on a PC, I'm sure if I knew the way on a PC I would recognize it in Mac terms.
