  • What's up, folks! I'm back with another Depeche Mode reaction, and this one was actually a request from a couple people, the wicked and profound "New Dress," the final tune on their 1986 Black Celebration album. So join me for another masterpiece from Depeche, though full disclosure, I talk about the lyrics a bit longer than usual at the start, so if you just want to hear the tune, jump to 5:57. But either way, I hope you enjoy! Cheers.

Who would skip your intro and not listen to you? That's why I'm here, also for your other reactions to other bands and songs and to listen to some of your own productions. You're doing a great job. I'm a DM-fan since 1982. My first 12" was 'Get The Balance Right!' and my first album that a friend of mine put on tape was 'Construction Time Again'. I love everything they produced up to Ultra, after that, the only nice album is 'Playing The Angel', but all the other albums 'Exciter' (which it did NOT), 'Sounds Of The Universe' (worst album ever imo), 'Delta Machine' and 'Spirit' I'm not appreciating as much. I could listen and watch you for a very long time without getting bored, and would love a reaction to 'Freestate' on the album 'Ultra' - which is as you guessed one of my favourite DM songs. Thanks Matt. Greetings from Belgium.

I think Reznor heard that laser sound and decided to make an entire career out of it🤣

Hahaha, right you are! My brother was a big NIN fan when he/they first emerged, so I heard plenty of Reznor's music in my early teens.

For me, this is the worst DM song of all time. Other stuff like What's Your Name?, A Photograph Of You & Pipeline that people seem to hate on all have something, whether a good melody, good chorus (just silly feel good vibes) or something really new and experimental. This has nothing. Bad music (like a really bad Breathing In Fumes), awful chorus and while I get the point the lyrics are trying to make, it just doesn't work (IMO). Give me P-R-E, double T-Y over this dirge any day of the week, at least that has some silly charm to it!

Haha, I will have to agree to disagree on some of those assessments, but hey, I respect your thoughts about synth-pop and even a criticism of a Depeche tune. So no worries at all, and please don't hesitate if you feel similarly about other tunes I react to (Depeche Mode or otherwise).
As for your comparison, yeah, I never realized people don't like "Pipeline," but that tune has very interesting sonics to me. Metallic, clangy, and almost eastern-Asian influenced (at least as my brain hears it). And I love "What's Your Name?"! As you say, it has a silly charm to it (and now that I'm beginning to understand Vince Clarke's sonic atmosphere more, I can hear his "bubble-gum synth-pop" touch). And I'll admit, as I write this, I'm not remembering "A Photograph of You".... (*commits seppuku from embarrassment*)

@@mattsnider2667 It's all good, everyone has their own personal taste. There are DM fans who love their 21st century stuff and don't like the 1980s stuff, and as wrong as it sounds, it's their opinion. I personally love the synths first and foremost, then the vocal, then the lyrics, so the throwaway lyrics don't bother me. Dave did a great job of making some of Martin's stupid lyrics work (A career in Korea being insincere) for example. As for New Dress, I compare it something similar that they did called Shame, which is conically very good and has the key for any good song; good chorus. As DM went away from being a synth band and started becoming a guitar focused band they ceased to be special and became just like any other band (IMO). In terms of synth music they are top of the tree with a few others, but as a guitar band there are dozens, maybe hundreds of much better bands. I'll always like them because the Composition of Sound family of bands were always my favorites, but now it is loving their old stuff (mostly anyway!) and liking/tolerating the later stuff.

@@handsolo1209 Is "in Korea" actually in that line?! I always thought it was just a repetition, as in "a career ... a career of being insincere". My mind is blown (and confused, lol).
But cheers, I respect that and as I've said in numerous videos, the early Depeche stuff will always be the most classic and nostalgic for me (even if I do like lots of the later stuff too).

@@mattsnider2667 Yes, it really is "a career in Korea." Maybe Martin was talking about North Korea and the insincere part was he really wanted to be in Seoul!. I love most of Martin's work (and he really was a very good lyricist and songwriter), but the lyrical genius some of the cultish DM fans make him out to be? Nah.

As you already wrote, everyone has its own taste. But don’t say something is stupid just because you may not understand it. You don’t have to like it but respect it. Sometimes the one that doesn’t understand is the stupid one. I like New dress a lot, especially the chorus. And I think for myself I understood it. By the way it was me who recommended it to Matt 😉
