    The inimitable Neil Peart (R.I.P.) once said it's about "M.U.S.I.C. - Make Up Something Interesting & Complimentary". That appears to sum it up pretty well.

    This is great. "Leave space" @ 22.00. Well, check out how Tim tackled this in the mid 80s with Idle Cure. That sololike thing in "Hungry Heart"@ 2.11, leaving space, cueing up for that saxophone solo, with his masterful use of the beloved volume pedal. Doesn´t get very much musical than this. And hey, this was 35 years ago. Thx!

    Love hearing you sweat throught your basic thoughts and mileage ideas. Living the dream In LA is so cool. I left (another story). I learned all my modes using Minor Aeolian in its first position. The penta blues thing. Then learned all the boxes so i could play min blues and natural min all over. Then learned F#m is the same as A major and wha-La lol... instantly knew all maj modes and maj blues.
    Lol... then I noticed starting each box in same root say 5th fret A, was A ionion, A Dorian, A phyrigian, A lydian, A mixolydian, A Aeolian, A locrian.
    Then I noticed lol... you can just take Min 1 position could be moved 1 whole position to start a new mode also!
    The I had all modes anywhere I wanted to punch into a maj or min mode. Learned about what whole half, half whole, aug, (symetericals etc)
    Mainly learned all that from just learning Min Pentatonic to natural minor 1st position. Lol since then I just love to play... and then went to become a doc of nursing yea.
    You know when we hear you play, we ser your smile... love the show never end !!! Thanks

    I got so much out of this. I read once that "contrast is the law of all art." Aside from being able to observe the master playing, what made the biggest impression on me was the concept of mixing the different contrasting elements (simple melody, intense blues/rock licks, and arpeggios) to paint a beautiful picture. And, of course the contrast between playing and leaving space. The great B.B. King, although he did not have Tim's versatility, understood that very well, and like Tim said, it captivates people. Thank you, Tim!

    Elegant simplicity, Tim. Ran 15 minutes over on 2.5 hour rehearsal this Saturday morning, with professional (scale by the minute) musicians: Helping out our sound engineer with setup, commiserating, since we have three vocalists at stage front, backed by a choir of five, and instruments ahead of the singers (flute, oboe, violins, cello, trumpet, timpanist with crash cymbal and I'm probably forgetting some). Balancing gain (8 headset lav mics on singers, for example) between vocals and the variety of instruments is a challenge, but we enjoy it. Resetting the stage before Sunday morning's service, so as usual "Sound guys are always FILO," First In, Last Out... Thanks always, Charlie at 1st Pres downtown, Coeur d'Alene, tropical Idaho.

    Of the handful of people that I consider true masters of the guitar, @Tim Pierce Guitar is probably the best of them in my opinion. Based just on the first 2 minutes of this video, I have to say, this is probably the best I've heard him sound too. There's just something so smooth, deliberate and magical about his touch. Another thing about playing a solo on one string is the sound quality matches from note to note. If you think of each string as a flute, the consistancy of the notes' sound are comforting. But when a melodic line is diced up on multiple flutes/strings, the line is a bit jarirng if you play the two versions next to each other. It probably only makes a dif for melodic hook that is the identifier for the tune.Also, the top three strings sound closer in sound quality, as does the bottom three.

    Best advise I've heard to avoid stressing over the theoretical technicalities of modes and to concentrate on playing along! to songs you like. Learning to fit in with the instruments in a commercially produced recording is what has drawn me to continued to play. I avoid strict covers but steal all the licks I can.

    For anyone struggling with the names of the modes or their order...
    I = Ionian
    Don’t = Dorian
    Play = Phrygian
    Like = Locrian
    My = Mixolydian
    Aunt = Aeolian
    Lynda = Lydian
    Except Lynda is my mom and that causes issues, but that’s just my world.

    I love the you use delay. It's inaudible while you are playing then we hear the trails faintly fading into the background within a few repeats when you stop playing.
    When I first started using effects, my delay was too up front, but over time, as I matured as a guitarist and figured out how to use it tastefully, I started to do the same thing.
    Occasionally, I use delay thats a bit more prominent, but usually thats a really short slapback to create a doubling effect or if I'm doing a part where I am trying to harmonize with the repeats.

    I like to start a solo with a brief reminder of the the most memorable part of the melody and then maybe a variation or a re-harmony. That mental activity then stimulates my response t what I hear myself play. After that 'I'm lost in playing along with that "new guy" who wasn't much noticed when the other instruments were carrying the song. I prefer not to have to carry the song unless I'm the singer and my own primary accompanist.

    Leave spaces... Frampton does this. He plays like a vocalist or a horn player. Singers and horn players HAVE to breathe, and so it’s natural for them to play that way. Guitarists and keyboardists don’t have that natural restriction, and that’s why they tend to just “keep playing”. So, just breathe... stop to take a breath and smell the roses. Let it build, bit by bit, and THEN you climax to a killer solo riff... then you breathe again. 😉😎🎸🎼🎶🎵
