the best thing about this from what ive seen so far are the effects they are the only thing that make this hardware tablewave vst produce some interesting timbers
One step forwards, two steps back. The best part of the OP-1 for me is using it on trips and on public transport. It sits perfectly on my lap, with a very nice integrated screen showing me what is happening. The aluminum keys feel great too, like a mechanical keyboard. Now, I have to balance a secondary screen (Apple only) or rely on remembering what all the LED combos mean unless I want to get lost in menu diving, and what are these buttons? Little plastic clickers? Disks for knobs? Idk, it looks like it does a lot of cool stuff, total powerhouse and all, but the design just feels archaic compared to the OP-1. I hope it's what other people want, but it's definitely not for me.
It all comes together pretty quickly. I've only had it a day and am getting the hang of the interface. It also comes with a little iPhone rack holder if needed.

This looks like a nice upgrade to the Pocket Operator line of products - a standalone tool for making short or improvisational music in a specific range of styles. It's more flexible though, capable of a wider range of sounds and more complex sequences. Probably not very useful as part of a larger studio though. It seems designed to play alone, and has some pretty hard limits. So probably best for musicians who are starting out or want a very minimalist style. It's in an odd niche somewhere above music toys but not really up to the level of professional instruments. So... If people view it as a Super Pocket Operator, they'll love it. But if compared to a DAW or a mod tracker or a Digitakt+Digitone or a table of synths, people will find it falls short. Depends on expectations.
I get a lot of mileage out of my OP-1. It's kind of a jack of all trades, master of none. Since it does a bit of everything, it's versatile and useful for filling gaps. And it's particularly useful as a sketch pad. I tend to draft songs there before making the full version, like sketching an image on paper before painting it on canvas. Would be really handy to have eight 12-minute tracks though, instead of four 6-minute tracks. And no electrical noise when plugged into USB. Those are the two main limitations I run into with it.
It looks fantastic and it is something I'd happily have alongside my OP-1 but the deal breaker is the insistence of only using iOS / MACOS devices as the screen. I can't think of a single sensible reason that it is so restricted and as I will never own an Apple device, it looks like I'll be ignoring this otherwise brilliant instrument. Seeing as this is mainly a GUI you've provided, please implement an Android compatible screen mode and I'll almost throw my money at you!
Maybe, but at least some assurance that the software would ever be written and subsequently made available would be nice. When 5 out of every 6 mobile phone owners have an Android device, this is a glaring oversight and a massive chunk of the market currently ignored. I also get that you can't cater for every Android device but aiming for the top handsets would be a start.
I have a great Idea @teenageengineering: make an upscaled version of OP-Z that's about a size of Yamaha's Seqtrack. I love my OP-Z but I'd really like bigger buttons and sturdier body with bigger battery. You don't even need to make any changes in the software - just make OP-Z bigger in size, it will help to play it easily and even redo buttons - make them computer-clicky. The price will stay the same and people will order new OP-Zs like crazy, including me!

thanks for the reply. i was just asking because i wanted to buy one and it seems it's worldwide unavailable atm. are there any production issues or do you guys work on OP-1 ver. 2 or whats the problem?
So much unnecessary flak for only supporting iOS. TE can build for whoever the hell they want. Android (great os) has intrinsic issues with audio latency due to the virtual nature of the operating system. That's why most serious mobile production suites only target iOS. Kindly stop and think before making a mess of the comments. Brilliant addition to the TE line by the way.
@Louis Smith it's not unnecessary flak. Nobody is saying they can't build for who they like. Everyone here loves what TE does and like myself have probably been waiting for ages to get a hold of their new bit of kit...only to be disappointed it's compatible with apple products only. Born of frustration nothing else. Please check today's headlines about students being forced to work in apple factories in China. Also, surely you've heard of the suicide nets around their other factories. Yes they can build for who they want, but to alienate over 50% of a potential customer base is pretty strange from a business point of view. I, like others, want it, but we can't have it.
@@redcaoimh3127 That's an interesting point you make. And I won't make any statements on the China thing as I am not knowledgeable on that and I won't be able to make a useful contribution. Just quickly googling it, however, I saw a statement from Apple spokeswoman Wei Gu: “We are urgently investigating the report that student interns added in September are working overtime and night shifts.” The supplier and had also been audited three times between March and June without finding student interns so I do not see how this could possibly be Apples fault. Again, not knowledgeable so won't say more.
@@redcaoimh3127 Additionally (and I am in no way very deep in the music industry but I do build mobile applications) and I have noticed an extreme correlation between people in creative pursuits such as music production and owning of Apple products. I find it strange that even 10% of their "customer base" use anything but iOS and macOS. Finally, if I were to build a production studio I would not even consider Android due to the technical challenges of building audio enabled applications for the platform, which are non-existent on iOS. Not a fanboy, I use and build for both. But it seems very reasonable that if you are going to build something like TE has you're only going to focus on iOS as the cost-benefit ration is much lower. If you are serious about producing music (which you arguably have to be to spend hundreds of dollars for a synth/sequencer) on a mobile OS you most likely have already invested in one of Apple's products. There are hardly any serious producing efforts on Android. But hey, I hope TE proves me wrong and engineers something brilliant for Android. I just wouldn't want to be on that engineering team :)
@@louissmit2220 suppose it comes down to trust with that story. Do you trust a PR employee of a TNC who's job is to protect the brand, an auditor of a TNC which like many auditors are too close to the business they're meant to regulate or do you trust an NGO who has discovered these practices in one of Apples suppliers, albeit a new supplier? I trust the NGO. TNCs and MNCs are very good at creating plausible deniablity (oh and tax evasion) on workers rights and pay by the way they structure their businesses so it never comes back to their door but to the suppliers, even tho its ultimately them that make the vast profits from the brand because of such practices.
@@LukeLoeffler Exactly, I thought the phone was just a display avenue. Louis and whoever please enlighten us as to how the display degrades latency ? Thanks. Looking forward HEARING your responses. Thanks for giving us all such well informed information about the product since you know so much.

You think this is expensive? Hell, the OP-1 is almost 10 years old and still costs a whopping $999... It's a very versatile, fun to use synth and lots of professional musicians use it, but it's ridiculously overpriced.
@@8BitMunky Hello hello. Yes after looking at the price it is a reasonable price. The Opi-1 was priced well when it was first released. It is a very clever piece of kit. No velocity sensitive keys are a downside but overall a good product. Now it it starting to look overpriced as time goes by. It should be reduced to at least £500 UK pounds.

hello david, thank you very much for your comment. if you are into deep sequencing and portable music making in general, then we believe you are truly missing out, if dismissing OP-Z without having had a personal hands-on experience with it. if you've had a chance to test it and realised that it is not for you, then so be it, everyone has different needs and wants. the 'is this a toy?' argument has been applied by a lot of people on our products, since day one. this is ok and we will continue to push boundaries and challenge conventions. toy or not is irrelevant, as long as an instrument, or any object, offers enough value. maybe some day drop by one of our free music making workshops, and we can show you everything the OP-Z is capable of. then you can easily judge if it offers enough value in your life to motivate an investment. thanks for taking the time to read this. take care and have a good one!
When I saw a debut of it in 2016 in a namm video, they called it the OP-“Zed” which I took as zero, meaning less than 1, it’s not an OP-2, it’s like rolling out an iPod mini, it’s not meant to be better, just smaller and less capable.
Only bringing this on IOS is unbelievably dumb. Are you only appealing to rich people with to much money? Yeah that sounds like so many musicians. Don't get me wrong i love teenage engineering, the op1, and this is probably also cool but this makes no sense for me. And then the sentence that everybody should have it in there pocket, wtf?! hey seaZon all good, as an audio/midi sequencer and synthesizer it really does not need any display at all. @@teenageengineering ok, thx for the answer. I looked a bit more into the op-Z now and yeah, it doesn't really need a display :) . After seeing people talk about their devices on the internet for the last few years I'm pretty sure TE's target market is people who don't know what they're doing and don't realize their products don't do anything you couldn't do more easily on your computer, and people who just like to hop trends and spend money. Never once seen any person make a case for why you would actually need any product they make. OP-1 was %100 a fad product with no utility for anyone who already has a DAW.

Hi Teenage Engineering, out of curiousity, are you able to use bluetooth headphones with the OPZ? or only wired options
So, apart of buying a 600$ machine I had so much hipe on, now I also have to buy another machine which costs 600$ despite the fact it's one of the oldes designs currently "supported"?
I know I can use it without the external screen aka mobile phone... But what about the plug-ins?
I heard the battery life is about 3hours. Are you guys flying over the Atlantic on the international Space Station ?
Obviously you've heard something wrong then.
Adzix // VVLV
Hope so too. But I did have confirmation from two owners. One managed to get 5:30 hours out off the battery. It seems to be short from the “4 Times back and forth over the Atlantic”
Are you from teenager engineering? Can you confirm the more or less 48 hour battery life
Thanks
I wish there was audio out over usb! When I tried to record my ipad air via headphone out the signal was quite weak. Is this substantially better?
audio over usb is now present. (going through some older comments to reflect updated firmware, thanks!)
Duuuuuuude. I need this.
TE made the battery life short and the battery replaceable so they can sell spare batteries for big bucks. TE is smart, be like TE!
They will surely surpass Apple.
Android support would be amazing

This looks very cool. I don’t think i could give up my OP-1 for this though. Part of me wants this but it’s still quite a pit of money...and it’s plastic with no screen. Should be called the ‘PO-Z.’
Velocity sens “keys”?
no, not internally, however respond to external velocity, and you can use the front-side pitchbend to control velocity per step.
So, not even windows pc? if I want to transfer sounds (i don't have iOS device) it can't be done with windows?!
oh sure it can! teenage.engineering/guides/op-z/disk-modes#import-sounds
@@teenageengineering thanks for the answer, this is less bad. How about Android app, is it possible to let us know if its on the road map? My purchase is dependent on that.

it looks neat, but is OP-1 discontinued now?
thanks. OP-1 is still in production and remains our premium product. OP-1 and OP-Z are very different and can work well together.
thanks for the reply. i was just asking because i wanted to buy one and it seems it's worldwide unavailable atm. are there any production issues or do you guys work on OP-1 ver. 2 or whats the problem?

So much unnecessary flak for only supporting iOS. TE can build for whoever the hell they want. Android (great os) has intrinsic issues with audio latency due to the virtual nature of the
operating system.
I find it strange that
even 10% of their "customer base" use anything but iOS and macOS.
Coool lets take out another bank loan for this piece of kit
At least it'll still be cheaper than the OP-1.
Hey, at least it’s LEGIT. And not some 30 bucko piano

save your money!! Bank loan for $600??
ya!
It seems pretty cool but (not tried yet) also overpriced for what it is. Unlike Pocket operators which are very reasonably priced.
hello turbo, thank you for your opinion. we encourage you to try the item in question before labeling it overpriced. your experience may very well give you a second opinion.
@@teenageengineering I would love to :) now into POs first.
No, they are not. Flimsy pieces of circuit board with useless screen and cheap sound cost like smartphones.
lemmie get an opz with a little matrix screen like the pocket operator has. then i dont care at all about the apple only limitations
Excuse my ignorance but why would anyone even need this? its hip and cool and nerdy but thats about it. I can bet its way over priced as well.
That's an accurate description of every TE product. "Hey you! Wanna pay $500-$1000 for something you could do more easily, more effectively and for free on your computer? I've got just the product for you!"
DeadlyPsyduck
Still cheaper than racks of analog synth gear. Much more portable too.
But I don't have a smart phone.
you don't need to. possibly someone around you has one and you can then team up so you could get a sense of it yourself. you don't need to but you may want to. thanks for your support!
@@teenageengineering Using other's smart phones are very dangerous idea. That is a security risk. Never use those words you replied. I can't believe this.
the app isn't required. It allows you to swap sounds and give you a GUI, but the opz can operate standalone
@@badfoodfeet oh, standalone. Then this new one is lower profile than op-1 cause this one doesn't have a screen on it?

Am I missing something here? This toy is £500?!!!! :-O
hello david, thank you very much for your comment. if you are into deep sequencing and portable music making in general, then we believe you are truly missing out, if dismissing OP-Z without having had a personal hands-on experience with it. if you've had a chance to test it and realised that it is not for you, then so be it, everyone has different needs and wants.
the 'is this a toy?' argument has been applied by a lot of people on our products, since day one. this is ok and we will continue to push boundaries and challenge conventions. toy or not is irrelevant, as long as an instrument, or any object, offers enough value. maybe some day drop by one of our free music making workshops, and we can show you everything the OP-Z is capable of. then you can easily judge if it offers enough value in your life to motivate an investment. thanks for taking the time to read this. take care and have a good one!

Seriously?!? Are you mocking your customers or what is this?!
Android system can't handle it. Why do you think there are no good DAWs on Android?
@@KRBY555 yeah ok I understand that, but then just say that's the reason for it to only be on IOS and don't say everybody should have it in their pockets. That's a weird statement and not true. Also they could bring it out for windows, that should be no problem,i hope they are doing that as soon as possible
hey seaZon all good, as an audio/midi sequencer and synthesizer it really does not need any display at all. 'most likely' is as far as we stretched it in this case and please do not be offended, life is too short for that. hopefully we can bring it out to as many platforms as possible, soon enough. any new ones will be announced through our website.
@@teenageengineering ok, thx for the answer. I looked a bit more into the op-Z now and yeah, it doesn't really need a display :) . Currently I'm happy with the op1 but it definitely looks interesting for the future especially if you bring software out for other platforms. I think I did calm down a bit. What triggered me was just, that the video felt like it's the most normal thing to just have it for Apple devices. Anyway I still like what products you are inventing, so keep that up ^^

So you went from the OP-1 which I still think is awesome, to a OP-1 mini with no screen unless your part of the Apple cult. I'm glad I waited 2 years to be disapointed by Teenage Engineering, I'll just wait another 3 years until they cave in and support Google Pixels.

OP-1 was %100 a fad product with no utility for anyone who already has a DAW.
ah thank you for your input. we assure you though, once you've met any of the thousands of people, young and old alike, who has had their lives changed due to experience with these products, you'd have a wider perspective. enjoy your time man zeb. hey you got it in your name already...
