I know, right? It’s truly crazy to me now to see them try and rationalize this as strictly a song about a time he saw some sort of angel or monster, when today we just accept Sufjan Stevens as a gay icon, what with the Love Yourself EP and stuff like this and John, My Beloved.
Lol I love seeing it in 2023. I imagine he gathered quite a large Christian audience, since he's religious himself and has done many beautiful covers of hymns (come thou fount is my favorite of his). I'm grateful he's been open about the tumult of discovering one's sexuality, it certainly helped me.
I love this man so much. He is so gente with his words and his music is just so sweet and beautiful. I hope his new album with Lowell turns out great :)
i love it how he spends time on his lyrics and uses them as they are ment to be used instead of just as filler frikin sweet song, reminds me of summer!
It's about when him and his friend saw the shadow or silhouette of some gigantic bird in the sky one night during summer camp and it scared them. Personally, I think he isn't revealing the whole thing.
Well...no, there’s obviously more to the story, but it wasn’t the kind of thing common spoken about thirteen years ago, from what I’ve heard. (I was seven at the time this was filmed).
@pcams10 I'd love to see the interview, concert footage, blog, whatever, where he said this. Of course, I'd also love to see the proof that he said what I remember him saying, because I only recall it anecdotally. Unfortunately I lack the Google Fu to fact check this one.
This song is amazing. As others have said before, the buildup and climax are both so powerful. This song is about innocence, and nostalgia, and love. The imagery of them as kids just exudes carefree innocence, especially the kiss. There is nothing sexual about it. The love described is the carefree love of youth. Anything else you see in it is just what YOU yourself are bringing to the table. The imagery in the background is also perfect for the ending.
this song is not homosexual, but the point of veiw, i believe, is from of a female's point of veiw. this is folk, so this concept is not something radical or new. He (she) looks back to the times she spent with her best friend (and probably young love), and now that the friend has run away/died, she regrets not telling him how much he meant to her.
Arjun Panda when did the song make any indications it was from a girls point of view, just because it's folk doesn't mean it follows the same pattern other songs have
Johnny Rohlf dude youre literally replying to a comment almost a decade ago. LOL. Some people are not straight and Im sure he has understood that by now.
Lmao people in the comments 12 years ago denying the gayness of this song so hard...
They couldn’t handle such a masterpiece having such subject matter

I can't even speak after watching this. His voice is PERFECT.

2019 holding the torch
2021.
2022!!!!
Another 2022 reporting in!
2023 ❤
Wow. This is beautiful, especially the chaotic part til the end. I actually am sitting here with my mouth wide open.
the great thing about sufjan is that he is just as good live as he is on cd. he is truly talented, unlike so many mainstream celebrities these days
I love the absolute mess it turns into at the end, it's wonderfully done. Fits the story so well. I'd still love to hear an acoustic version though...
these wings are so weird, they move around a lot so it doesnt even look like theyre fake
i love it how he spends time on his lyrics and uses them as they are ment to be used instead of just as filler
frikin sweet song, reminds me of summer!
Oh God, he should always sing with almost his back to the crowd. Maybe it's me, but I feel like he sounds more authentic and intimate.
Oh man, great performance! This is my favorite Sufjan song. The words, the build. Makes me want to cry.
We were in love.
We were in love.
So gorgeous.
This is probably the best arrangement I've ever heard, I love it more than the record.
The one person who disliked this since 2007 is a hater... just saying. This song is amzing!
That ending was a thunderstorm followed by a rainbow.
seriously one of the best performances I have ever seen on youtube, i fucking love you sufjan stevens.

"I kissed him...we were in love, we were in love" He revealed everything. Society just didn't know how to handle it a decade ago.
Well...no, there’s obviously more to the story, but it wasn’t the kind of thing common spoken about thirteen years ago, from what I’ve heard. (I was seven at the time this was filmed).
this is the most beautiful song that's ever been written
it could be metal.. it could if it wanted to, but i don't think it does lol
i'm in love
If I could hold his face once and die, I would die happy.
Gods eye
Nice home made wings I'll see if my kids can make me a pair. Good tune though Sufjan

I LOVE SUFJAN HE IS AMAZING!!!!
1 person wanted to make a red sliver.

the song he follows this with tho-- I wish the recording kept going haha
"Wake up everybody. Wake up everybody."
the fucking ending....................
@butterpranks Never. It's completely understandable.
@MrMojoRisin89 What a strange thing to say........
He's so beautiful
Thanks for sharing.

Jonathan Boucher How come he said it was sexual in an interview, then? :D #SameLove
which interview?
it's gay
me three
@jacksonboywonder1996 You're assuming that the protagonist of the song is Sufjan himself. Not every song he writes is autobiographical.
Yay for not quoting the bible in the comment section (Y) You are everything Sufjan hates hahaha
Music/Science implying Sufjan has the capacity to hate
Brilliant musician. Shoddy comedian.
Where can I find said comedy?
This song is so beautiful! And no, Aurreus, it's not about being gay. It's about the perfect love that one has for his best friend.
Joshua Ochoa incorrect! Source: interview!
I thought this would be a metal song with a name like that..... BOOOO
The epitome of a sell out. What a crying shame he had his little "epiphany".
MrMojoRisin89 sorry you're offended that he has a different sexual orientation than you, friend.

Also Sufjan literally has said that this situation happened to him
