LOST's viewership was its highest at the start of Season 2 with the reveal of what was in the hatch (over 20M); then the show's ratings took their largest drop in everyone's favourite episode - Season 3's "Stranger in a Strange Land" - down to 14.5M. The rest of that season remained below 15M. Then the opening 2 episodes of S4 saw the show's last higher viewership of over 15M - so the opening of the 4th season gave the show one last big boost as people tuned in to see what new direction the show would be going in. However after that, and despite the openings of S5 and S6 each showing an uplift in viewership each time, the overall viewing for the show never got back to over 15M again after that. The last big viewership the show had was its S6 series finale (just under 14M) which was higher than pretty much all of S5 and S6, but again it still wasn't higher than the 1st two episodes of S4. It's hard to say exactly why the viewership never returned to upward of 15M but I think a large part of it is because the show moved away from its very simple and straight-forward high concept and easy pitch of "plane crashed on a mysterious deserted island and....". I think that once the show was no longer about their survival on the island and discovering its mysteries it was no longer as easy and "pitchable" to the casual audience. Yes if you're completely invested in the show's mythology and its character development I do agree the show gets more complex and compelling after S4, but yes a lot of the casual audience had grown used to it being very easy to duck in and out of the show and understand the simple basic ongoing premise of people having to get off the island. Once that simple premise was over they had no idea what the grand destination was any more. I think the people who loved the show had their minds blown by the S3 reveal in the sense of "where the hell could this go now?! wow this is so exciting and such bold storytelling!" while for other viewers all they could think of is "ummm so where could this go now? Ummm I'm confused... I'm not sure if I like the sense of the unknown my story is now going in." Once the goal of getting off the island was complete, instead of getting more and more confused by the mind-bending plot I think a lot of them took what closure they got and didn't want more confusion and they moved on. That's my take and analysis! Great job as always Elie!
I agree with all of your comments. However, the overemphasis from S3:E2 through S3:E8 on 5 characters took away from the main cast. Way too much on the cage play from my POV with the rest of the cast not doing anything to rescue Jack and the skaters. Ratings dropped notably after S2. All that said the series is very very good. Can't wait to watch more E's reactions. So many more twists and turns to come.
@TomOnTheRun Yes that was the turning point of the series in terms of its creation. The writers being unable to set their end date and on contract to leave at the end of S3 and them struggling to negotiate to end the series had them literally stuck in cages. So yes unfortunately for the show to get its end date the network needed to see the potential damage that could come if they didn’t allow them to end the series at all. If it had continued without an end goal for the writers to work toward then I think the whole show would have gradually declined completely until it were to be eventually cancelled.

Little trivia: the final scene between Ben and Windmore was actually shot in England. Alan Dale was committed to another project but the producers knew this scene was too important to the story so they flew a crew and Michael over there to shoot that scene.
It took me awhile to come to peace with Danielle so abruptly dying. But eventually I realized that it was better for her to go as she did, then live thru the loss of Alex.

Amazing performance by Michael Emerson. He went thru the wringer of emotions. Ben gambled with a terribly risky bluff with Keamy, and it backfired tragically. He absolutely loved Alex. But I believe that Ben truly thought there were a kind of gentlemen's rules in place. Honestly, I have no doubt in my mind that whatever Ben did, Keamy would have still killed Alex (and anyone else). He and his team killed Rousseau & Karl without hesitation, without even finding out if they had useful info, picked off a bunch of randoms in an instant, and sent a missile into a house. Keamy and his team are ruthless in the extreme.

Yo my boy Ben had a shotgun under the piano bench, which he could have accessed at any time and escaped but he was exactly where he wanted to be... Ben is the best character on this show.
Exactly. Ben isn't a straight up, evil, villain. He's protecting the Island and he's one of the good guys. There's countless moments in the show that prove this.
@@John_Locke_108 Ben is 💯 always been my favorite character on this show. He's smart, calculating, complex, manipulative, strategic, and he is truly a gray character. Emerson does such an amazing job with his humanizing of such a bad guy.
Why do so many reactors not get that Ben is trying to save Alex when he says she means nothing? 😂 Ben’s character is all about thinking he is the smartest man in the room. This is another clear instance of Ben thinking he can talk his way out of anything. Which up until now, he has been able to. He’s already shown he cares for Alex in his own messed up way I.e. trying to stop her getting pregnant, sending her to the temple.
Exactly! It’s a huge moment in Ben’s storyline, for all of his wits and plans, he couldn’t save her, and she died thinking she meant nothing to him. For the first time Ben met his match in the cruelest way. This is a moment that will haunt him forever.
Most reactors I've seen seem to get the point that Ben was putting on a show, actually trying to save her life by lying about his feelings for his daughter. And I think they've realized this due to the cracking and emotion in his voice at the time. For MOST reactors (and all other viewers, in general) who don't get the point, that believe Ben was being selfish and sacrificing Alex in order to save himself, I think they're letting their previous knowledge... their biased view drive their opinion.
RIP Alex 😢 Ben said to Keamy "You and I Both Know That Once You Have Me, There's Nothing to Stop You From Killing Everybody Else On This Island." So Ben cannot go to Keamy because it would be the death of Alex. He can only threaten the mercenary and make his pressure (Alex) as low as possible. This is why he says she is just a pawn. It's tactical, he loves Alex, as we see when he says goodbye to her. She was the only one whose death could touch him. That’s why he took her away from Carl because she could have been pregnant and therefore die. He protected her. He does not protect anyone else on the island. He has no scruples to let Juliet drown at the start of season 3, or to have the girls of Looking Glass.
This was an amazing episode. Ben really cared for Alex but in his very weird way, he really thought he can convice keimy. I think is the first time we see things not going the way he planned. About ratings. Lost was the most talked show in the world in his first season only. The hatch i think is what everybody remembers the most. Then the ratings were slowly going down season to season. They always pick up a lot on the seasons finales. They were great events. The problem with lost i think, its that was getting harder and harder for people to follow it, the plot got more complicated and it was difficult for a casual viewer to pick it up if he lost a couple of episodes. Season 4, 5, 6 were the ratings got sifinificant lower because lot of stuff happened per episode and because things were getting a little too crazy, too sci fi. Saying that Lost always has a big chunck of audience wich remained loyal to the end. Never a cancellation was close. But it was proven that having an end line, a plan, was what the show needed. I think that was the main problem with the finale. Lot of people who only watched the first season or even the first three season, turned on for the finale and didnt understand anything. Causing lot of misunderstanding about it. Until this day.
Ben is a master piece of work. I love the battle between Ben and Widmore. So good! There are times I find myself cheering for Ben and other times I marvel at his whit and planning. There is a level of "he is the man behind the curtain" but (not giving anything away) there is also Widmore, Jacob, Richard and the guys behind the Darma Initiative. "You changed the rules." So good!
I think part the reason LOST started losing viewers later on is that the show is heavily serialized. If you missed a couple of episodes in season 4 (which moved really fast compared to season 3) it wasn't easy to catch up. You basically had to wait for the DVDs to come out or you just forgot about it, which is what happened to a couple of my friends.
Top 3 things Elie does NOT say: ×3 "Man, it's getting worse and worse" ×2 "I don't wanna see this character ever again." ×1 "I didn't see that coming" Cuz you know... He always sees things coming, it's kinda disturbing 😂
Ben was used to being able to lie and manipulate his way through anything. With Keamy, he finally met someone that wouldn't work on. "If the rule you followed brought you to this, of what use was the rule?" - Anton Chigurh
I'd hardly call Ben 'evil'. He's been an antagonist to our group. But his perspective comes from a whole other way of life, so that makes sense. So far, he's been pretty right about things. He certainly knows how to move the pieces around the board to his advantage. In ways that make him very punchable. But if Ben was evil, he would've had Jin, Sayid, & Bernard killed instead of bluffing. If he was evil, he could've turned that shotgun on camp Locke, or just disappear. He didn't. He loved Alex. He didn't believe she'd be killed. He'll have to live with what happened... with his guilt, grief & regret.
SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER If you've watched the show, you know the answer is that he did NOT. Just as he will soon tell Hurley. Ben was not the leader then, Charles was. Look it up. Ben didn't warn anyone, that was his part. But it was happening with or without him. It's all clearly laid out in 5x12. So I stand by what I said.
Trivia for you Elie you're welcome to respond. All the drawings and paintings you have seen displayed in the background throughout the series was made by the director Jack Bender.
Ben was bluffing because he thought "the rules" would protect Alex. That is what happens when you just click I agree, I agree instesd of actually reading those long pages of terms and conditions. That is why he said everythings gonnna be OK. It is interesting that Sayid started a relationship with Shannon after finding out that Nadia was alive and living in the USA. He had not seen Nadia for many years though and they weren' t actually together in Iraq. Ellie, I think you need a LOST Support Animal.
In the previous episode Ben told Michael/KJ that he doesn't kill innocent people - I believe those are the "rules" that he thought this "game" was being played by, and Widmore had Keamy break them. P.S. I've said it before, but @williamcarr7347 has the best YT avatar ever. Lost University - home of the fighting Polar Bears!
Viewership began to slip in season 3. Episode 6 aired in early November 2006 and didn't return for 3 months, February 2007, so some viewers didn't return because they had lost interest during the hiatus. Then there was the 2007 writers' strike so season 4 didn't air until January of 2008. Again, some viewers didn't return for S4 even after the that great S3 finale.
Maybe I lived in a Bubble when the show was first aring but I didn't hear about anybody giving up on Lost until half way through Season 5. But boy did those people miss out because Season 5 is even better than Season 4.
One of the few times we see Ben overplay his hand and he lost the pot. You weren't playing cards with Locke or Sayid this time, bro. They're junior varsity. This was a professional leaguer.
Fun fact. When i first watched through this show i somehow accidentally skipped this ep while going through the show and didnt realize till i had finished s4. For the whole time watching the rest of s4 i kept wondering what the hell happened to alex not realizing i missed a whole ep. I went back and watched this ep before starting s5 but i still am dumbfounded and smh at past self for allowing myself to not realize i skipped one of the best eps of the show
7:36 huh! Even I wasn't aware of that tidbit of fan trivia. Well, I do know that a bunch more chose follow along and did the same thing after the S4 finale because they thought IT was the perfect ending. But I said the exact same thing you're saying now... What if thay have to return SOME reason? What if there is a greater purpose?
Ben just made the biggest mistake of his life, he always believes he is in control and in one second his entire world is shattered. So heartbreaking seeing Alex executed, also kinda ballsy for a show to kill off a teenage girl like that!
Just believing Ben's story about how he got off the island are you? 😝 Dude woke up disoriented in the middle of the Sahara not knowing what year it was
You got bad info. The rating didn't drop at the end of S3 they dropped after the six episode arc that started S3. People weren't used to not having questions answered on tv shows at the time Lost was airing, we just had the 3+ month break between season 2-3 and then we got 6 episodes of people trapped in cages and then we had another 3+ month break after that. People just didn't come back when S3 returned in S3. And I could be wrong but I believe when it came back it moved to the 10PM airtime and not as many people watch tv at that time. I also want to add that we didn't have streaming at the time, so if you missed and ep, you missed an ep. And to catch up on seasons you had to buy the dvds. I will post a rating chart in the discord for up to what you have seen.
And this is why Lost is the most important reason why we have Prestige TV - execs realized they were better off with 10-12 episode seasons, run every week with a 9-18 month break between them, than the previous method of 6 episodes, wait a couple months, 6 more episode, summer hiatus, reruns in between yada yada Lost, and the availability of streaming, are the reasons TV shows release the way they do now.
The board game they were playing was, Risk is a strategy board game of diplomacy, conflict and conquest[1] for two to six players. The standard version is played on a board depicting a political map of the world, divided into 42 territories, which are grouped into six continents. Turns rotate among players who control armies of playing pieces with which they attempt to capture territories from other players, with results determined by dice rolls. Players may form and dissolve alliances during the course of the game. The goal of the game is to occupy every territory on the board and, in doing so, eliminate the other players.[2] The game can be lengthy, requiring several hours to multiple days to finish. European versions are structured so that each player has a limited "secret mission" objective that shortens the game.
This is a dark episode. A great episode but dark. Ben's first real failure. This will haunt him until the end. You're about to get a very different Ben. I always have to skip Alex's death scene. It's so hard to watch. The weak "Charlie?" when Claire got blasted 😭
Elie, you are forgetting one thing, you are watching this show 20 years after and on a daily basis. Back then people had to wait months between seasons, so it's easy to give up on a show and don't care any longer. (An example is what's happening with Cobra Kai this days)
If it’s any consolation, my maniacal dog tried to leap through my TV (which wasn’t even on) and smashed my 1/72 Saturn V rocket model to shit, along with breaking my Lego International Space Station so comprehensively I still haven’t tackled putting it back together for fear I will have to start from scratch.
Ratings only started to drop on season 5. The finale of this season is the only episode of LOST that got the #1 slot in all the TV of that week on the US.
Ben thought he could bluff his way out of this even sacrificing his own daughter to do it. Before I thought Widmore and his mercinaries are evil but on rewatch I had a different mindset. As ruthless and calculating Charles Widmore is, its Ben own fault that his daughter Alex died. I'm still pissed off that Danielle died in the previous episode.
ben and locke told jack that the people in the freighter were dangerous and we're going to murder everyone and jack called them and gave them the island location anyway, everything that happens from here on is his fault
Jack would have certainly believed them if they hadn't lied to him and/or prevented him from leaving the island by all means since the crash. So it's Ben and Locke's fault for everything that happens. How do you believe someone who always lied to you ? The Boy Who Cried Wolf. Don’t you read ?😂😂

I think Ben was hedging his bets on the "rules" between him & Widmore.
In his mind, they weren't going to kill her because "they couldn't"...I guess
RIP Alex 😢
Ben said to Keamy "You and I Both Know That Once You Have Me, There's Nothing to Stop You From Killing Everybody Else On This Island." So Ben cannot go to Keamy because it would be the death of Alex.
Funny, if Ben hadnt tried to protect Alex by sending her, Carl and Danielle away, the commandos never would have gotten past the fence.
I love Ben.
The minion of Doom has finally had enough abuse and presented a counter offer of it's own...
This episode shocked me. I mean Alex' scene.
Top 3 things Elie does NOT say:
×3 "Man, it's getting worse and worse"
×2 "I don't wanna see this character ever again."
×1 "I didn't see that coming"
Cuz you know... He always sees things coming, it's kinda disturbing 😂
I love protective Sawyer 🥰 Hurley and Jin are his boys and he don’t play when it comes to them.
So this is why Hurley said he was sorry for going with Locke
Catching up on reaction. Love this episode.
Here we go!
He'll have to live with what happened... with his guilt, grief & regret.
he killed entire dharma dude wtf? he is def evil.

If you've watched the show, you know the answer is that he did NOT. Just as he will soon tell Hurley. Ben was not the leader then, Charles was. Look it up. Ben didn't warn anyone, that was his part. But it was happening with or without him. It's all clearly laid out in 5x12. So I stand by what I said.
“That cabin be like the Room of Requirement, man - only shows up when you need it.” 😂😂😂

Trivia for you Elie you're welcome to respond. All the drawings and paintings you have seen displayed in the background throughout the series was made by the director Jack Bender.
RIP the lego! Great reactions to swason 4. Peace
People say not to but I, too, always go for Australia first in games of Risk. Beginning Down Under, my record for global conquest is fairly good.
I have been a fan of Michael Emerson ever since he guested in the X-Files episode "Sunshine Days".
Amazing Episode!
@@John_Locke_108 I almost didn’t watch the rest of the series after season 3 because Charlie died.
One of the few times we see Ben overplay his hand and he lost the pot. You weren't playing cards with Locke or Sayid this time, bro. They're junior varsity. This was a professional leaguer.
Yaaaas that thumbnail made my day
Fun fact. When i first watched through this show i somehow accidentally skipped this ep while going through the show and didnt realize till i had finished s4. For the whole time watching the rest of s4 i kept wondering what the hell happened to alex not realizing i missed a whole ep. I went back and watched this ep before starting s5 but i still am dumbfounded and smh at past self for allowing myself to not realize i skipped one of the best eps of the show
I thought you already had the Oceanic 6. How does Desmond fits into been one of them? I am confused here.
5:53 Ben Wick😂
Ben just made the biggest mistake of his life, he always believes he is in control and in one second his entire world is shattered.
So heartbreaking seeing Alex executed, also kinda ballsy for a show to kill off a teenage girl like that!
The biggest plot twist would have been if you couldn't remember the flight number 815. Lol
Just believing Ben's story about how he got off the island are you? 😝
Dude woke up disoriented in the middle of the Sahara not knowing what year it was
You got bad info.
And this is why Lost is the most important reason why we have Prestige TV - execs realized they were better off with 10-12 episode seasons, run every week with a 9-18 month break between them, than the previous method of 6 episodes, wait a couple months, 6 more episode, summer hiatus, reruns in between yada yada
Lost, and the availability of streaming, are the reasons TV shows release the way they do now.
Not the legos 😂
They gotta be playing Risk
Ratings only started to drop on season 5. The finale of this season is the only episode of LOST that got the #1 slot in all the TV of that week on the US.
Noooooooo not the Minion Godzilla destroying the city of LEGO Hogwarts land 🫨🫨🫨
"I have this under control," Ben's worst lie of the series.
You remember Shannon's dead, right?
All your questions about what motivated Ben to sacrifice his own daughter or why he did it will be answered.
Excellent reaction Bro
RIP Alex
2nd!
Yup. Even when this airing live, I knew in my gut that Jack was making the wrong decision.
Always listen to Taller Ghost Walt.
@@youtpfpm6097 no, he wouldn't have. he didn't even want to believe the island was different after seeing his dead father walking
Jack was supposed to call the freighter. Everything happens as it should.
This episode was an excuse to get rid of the secondary characters that nobody cares about😂
Pay attention to the cold breath-exhalation visible for only a brief moment when Ben wakes up in the desert 😊
That's a spoiler
Seriously. Cmon
@@TiagoFerreira-zp9gi how's that a spoiler are you serious? When I first saw the episode it caught my attention immediately and wondered why that happened. The only spoiler here is you saying it's a spoiler
@@TiagoFerreira-zp9gi so if I also say pay attention to "that island is mine Benjamin" line from Widmore, it's also a spoiler with your logic. LOL. It's something WE ALREADY SEEN, we see Ben waking up in the desert with a cold breath, and Widmore saying that line. Nothing is spoiler here, get your definition of what a spoiler is, right
@@sheikGR it's not a spoiler if you see it and think it might be something. It IS a spoiler if you tell someone else to go back and see it because then they know it is important.
Alex was the sacrifice Ben was willing to give to the island Yo, he has a dark soul. So much more to come that will blow your mind. So any regrets with Sawyer, Hurley and Claire breaking away from Jack's camp vs Locke?
no she wasn't. He was bluffing and it backfired. He was in shock.. He committed to killing Penny because Widmore "changed the rules". None of that squares with what you said.
Exactly. He’s trying to save Alex by saying she’s just a pawn. I can’t understand why so many people misunderstand this
@@pewburrito Wowza, a bluff play with a supposed loved one? The LOST creators do push the extremes. Enjoy the reaction channel and responses.
I think Ben loved Alex but he doesnt care for anything more than himself.
Yes. Shannon was just a side piece. I'm team Nadia for life.
