  • Joby Aviation, Inc., a pioneer in electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft for commercial passenger service, achieved a groundbreaking milestone with its recent electric air taxi flight in New York City. This marked the city's inaugural electric air taxi flight and represented Joby's first venture into urban airspace.
The aircraft soared from the iconic Downtown Heliport in Manhattan on Sunday, November 12th. Simultaneously, New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared the city's commitment to electrify the heliport, setting the stage for New York to lead in adopting eco-friendly flight. Joby's flight, part of a press conference where the aircraft is anticipated to fly again, came after preparatory flights at the HHI Heliport in Kearny, New Jersey.
"New York's electrification of one of the world's most renowned heliports showcases global leadership in adopting electric air travel. We're thankful for the city's support and excited to collaborate with visionary partners like Delta Air Lines in bringing our air taxi service to this market," said JoeBen Bevirt, Founder and CEO of Joby Aviation. "Our goal is to make quiet, emissions-free flight an everyday reality for New Yorkers, significantly reducing the impact of helicopter noise."
Through its partnership with Delta Air Lines, Joby envisions New York as an early launch market post-Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) certification. The company plans to provide swift, noiseless journeys using its piloted, four-passenger electric aircraft with zero operating emissions. Joby's aircraft is optimized for consecutive flights and can cover up to 100 miles on a single charge, encompassing 99% of current trips across New York City's boroughs. Compared to a car journey from Manhattan to John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), which takes over an hour, Joby estimates the air trip to be a mere seven minutes.
"The Adams Administration's commitment to technology innovation aligns with economic growth and improved quality of life. The Downtown Manhattan Heliport's strategy reflects these priorities, positioning it as an industry leader in adopting eVTOLs-a quieter and greener helicopter alternative," stated Andrew Kimball, President & CEO of the New York City Economic Development Corporation (NYCEDC).
Joby and Delta collaborate closely with the Port Authority of New York and the NYCEDC for initial operations planning, including infrastructure development at JFK and LaGuardia International Airport (LGA). This initiative builds upon Delta's substantial investments in enhancing customer experiences at its New York hubs.
"Gail Grimmett, SVP of Sustainability Performance and Strategic Partnerships at Delta, emphasized Delta's $7B investment in New York City, particularly at LaGuardia and JFK hubs. This aligns with the progress made in launching clean, quiet, and convenient air taxi services for Delta customers in New York," said Grimmett. The collaboration reflects the commitment to advancing new and sustainable technologies, supported by Mayor Eric Adams.
Joby's aircraft distinguishes itself with a remarkably lower acoustic footprint than traditional helicopters, enabling operation in densely populated areas like New York City without contributing to background noise. In 2022, Joby collaborated with NASA to measure its aircraft's sound, confirming it registered a mere 45.2 A-weighted decibels (dBA) when flying overhead at an altitude of 1640 feet (500 meters)-quieter than an average conversation.
Having covered over 30,000 miles with its full-scale prototype eVTOL aircraft since 2017, Joby recently celebrated the first aircraft from its Pilot Production Plant in Marina, California. The company delivered the inaugural electric air taxi to the US Air Force for on-base operational testing. Joby anticipates launching its commercial passenger service in 2025.
