This song is about inspiration that he got from an old man working in the lounge. There's a few folks who tried to argue this was racist but that's not the message at all. He was inspired and even had a dream about the old man's words. He was inspired by the simplicity and meaningful takeaway of the old man's thoughts. Not the best version of the song but I remember it well. Great reaction!
Tom T. is one of the OG country storytellers. "I Like Beer", "2 Weeks in a County Jail", "Faster Horses", and "I Love" will get you started. (2 Weeks is my fave)
The story behind this song is that Tom T. Hall was in Miami in 1972 to entertain at the Democratic Convention. Late one night, he stopped at the hotel bar for a nightcap. As the song says, the only other people there were the bartender and the janitor. When the janitor started talking to him, he didn't respond, preferring to be left alone. Eventually, though, he warmed up and continued the conversation. As someone mentioned below, he wrote the song on an airplane airsick bag and had it completed by the time he got back to Nashville. In addition to the others mentioned here, I'd recommend "Homecoming," about a musician returning home after a long absence in the wake of his mother's death, and "Margie's at the Lincoln Park Inn." Bobby Bare's version of the latter is best.
Love Tom T Hall, especially since he wrote a song about my hometown. "Ode to a half a pound o Ground round". Always reminds me of my Grandfather, he loved Tom T. Hall, the song "I Love" was his favorite.
My grandfather introduced my to Tom T. Hall in the 80's as a child. This man is The Story Teller in my opinion. Such an icon, and so very much under-rated. Love the reaction, and can't wait for more!
My Daddy loved Tom T. He had his 8 tracks, then his cassettes, and his CDs. I would listen to Tom T riding around with Daddy in his El Camino truck. Thank you for this. There's some fine suggestions for songs from other commenters. I love when newbies discover the music that raised me. 🙃
Camera sizes are different from then. But,most of these old ones are from Lawrence welk. the Ed Sullivan show after that was American band stand & soul train too. All for music. Tom t hall sang teddy bear it makes everyone cry! He just wants to relax and be happy.
Tom T is the quintessential story teller. Some more of his songs you should react to ... "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died", "Salute to a Switchblade", "I Love", "Country Is", and my favorites.. "I Like Beer" and "Faster Horses (The Cowboy and the Poet)"!
Tom T Hall was a brilliant song writer. "Faster Horses" and "The Year That Clayton Delaney Died" are a couple of my favorites. He also wrote "Harper Valley PTA" that Jeanie C Riley had a huge hit with. You asked about the instrument. to me it sounded like a violin/fiddle, but I'm not sure.
I've watched a video on youtube of him as an older fellow singing that song and telling the story of it. That next day when he was on the plane he found that slip of paper in his pocket with that line written on it, and wrote out most of the rest of the song on a sick bag from the back of the seat in front of him, while on the plane.
We do NOT have to be careful and mute ourselves, and we should not Choose to do so! All we really have to give each other in this world is our own experiences and exchange them learning of other's experiences too. That brings us together, and makes society stronger. Everything that divides us from one another is of the evil one; and I urge us all not to go into business with Ol' Scratch!
I've never seen this love performance, but you can tell what show it was for since he works the shout-out into the modified lyrics. The original song has the bartender watching "Ironside."
Watermelon Wine seems to be a thing in Southern Culture, at least some US states, and in country. I've seen it turn up in a few country songs, the biggest 3 I've heard being Craig Morgan's That's what I love about Sunday, Tracy Byrd's Watermelon Crawl, and Lainey Wilson's Watermelon Moonshine. Though when I was trying to remember the names and just googled to see if I could find more songs, I found a Reddit post accusing Lainey Wilson of unoriginality and possing tune theft; it's a frequent thing in music to my understanding, especially Country, to lift arrangements from older song in part or in whole and put new lyrics to the melody, but there were a few redditors she took at least a few lyrics and the whole melody for her new song. Dunno how much believe but *shrug*
Notice with the old microphone, they moved it accordingly. If they were hotting a high note, they'd move it out, and come back in. They manovored it for they voice range.
Krizz love your show and would like for you to check out the group Home Fee singing " Snowglobe ". Most people think it's a Christmas song but it's a Love song. Tim Foust the bass and lead singer in this wrote it.
Krizz: Microphones since their inception (1924-ish) have been able to pick up sensitive sounds at a distance. Rappers are using the ‘presence effect’ of the mics to their supposed benefit by holding them close. The upside down thing is only their “style” trend. Almost any mics can be as sensitive as the “gray skinny” ones you refer to here. Modern mics are MUCH more sensitive than those old ones, if used properly. They also have thinner diaphragms and tougher housings much less handling noise. Yes, Tom T. Hall made a no.1 hit from some short statements told to him by an old man in a club.
Those mikes aren't wireless. Everything worked through the cord and a sound board. Like the difference between a cell phone and a land line that's going through copper wire. Did you ever notice how much clearer a call is through a land line with a phone that's not cordless, if the lines are good you can hear the person at the other end of the call breathing. No filters on that old equipment, you got any audio that was close to it.
As many 'country' songs as you have reacted too, you have got to start giving the artists benefit if the doubt. If you can't understand this song and it doesn't get you in your 'feels'? You have lost your way man!! This song was anything but funny!
Back then there was a kind of innocence in country music. Wonderful song and a huge hit back in the day. Your subscribers may recommend that you react to a song by David Allen Coe. His song The Ride is haunting and I would recommend it myself. But there are a couple of things you should know about David Allen Coe. He served hard time in prison and as a white guy, he joined a gang of white guys. He is anything but politically correct.
Tom T Hall was a master storyteller. This list is very, very long. I would encourage you to go down this rabbit hole. It is an education. The Old Gentleman had more sense than a Harvard trained lawyer. He knew the important things in life.
With your knowledge and experience, Do you ever wonder why your channel doesn’t have more subs or views, Compared to other black reactors you know? I’m not judging and you do you but, The white eyelids thing, ain’t workin. I understand you are already successful and don’t really need a TH-cam channel, no there’s no real NEED to change anything.
Tom T Hall one of the best story telling singers of all time. ❤Great rabbit hole to go down.
Old Dogs are loyal, Children are innocent and Watermelon wine is mellow.
Well Said

Love Tom T Hall, now he sure could tell a story. Thanks for your reaction
Tom T Hall songs I Love, and Faster Horses
Tom T. is one of the OG country storytellers. "I Like Beer", "2 Weeks in a County Jail", "Faster Horses", and "I Love" will get you started. (2 Weeks is my fave)
The seventies were simpler and not so complicated as today. I’m a 64 year-old grandmother from Western North Carolina and I love this song.
Tom T. Hall was smooth and a great storyteller. The old gentleman taught Tom T. Hall what was comforting and loyal in this world. Great song.
This was a big song in my childhood....I remember singing it with my Dad. Great memories. Thank you for sharing your reaction to it.
I was a kid when this came out, I grew up listening Tom t hall, he was a treasure

The best part of this song is that it actually happened this way.
Based on a real conversation Hall had with a hotel porter in Florida while he was attending the 1972 Democratic National Convention.
My grandfather introduced my to Tom T. Hall in the 80's as a child. This man is The Story Teller in my opinion. Such an icon, and so very much under-rated. Love the reaction, and can't wait for more!
Tom talks about this story being true. He actually wrote the song the next day on his flight to Atlanta.
Tom T Hall is one of the greatest storytellers of all time
"The Ballad of Forty Dollars" is an awesome song by Tom T. Hall as most of his songs are, but you should check that one out!
Thank you for this one. Tom T Hall is unmatched in song writing. "Homecoming" is great.
Tom T. is awesome. Thanks for reacting to this one. I think you would like his songs Faster Horses.
He's a legend for telling stories while he sang
Back in the day the microphones were using an analog signal and today we mostly use digital microphones.
What a sweet ole song ❤️
Tom T Hall…. Best storyteller ever. This takes me back to my time with my daddy him playing the guitar and us sitting on the porch singing
I love this song. I asked Alexa when this song was released. It was released in 1972.

I loved your reactions and comments on Tom T Hall singing ( Old Dogs and Children and Watermelon wine)!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Tom T Hall was a master story teller an OG for sure 🙏❤️rip Tom
He is a great storyteller.
Tom a great song writer known as The Storyteller. This was based on an actual incident he took as an idea for the song.
A song with a similar vibe is "I Believe in You" by Don Williams - who has many other wonderful songs as well.
You will love the beautiful song
My dads favorite song! Rip dad.
Tom T was also a great song writer probably had more hits sang by other people than he sang his self. Harper Valley PTA Jennie C Riley.

You're at right on it Krizz !!❤❤❤

He still is around and I believe on heart of Texas records
Tom passed by his own hand a while back. Losing his wife broke him.
@ oh now, I remember thank you! I think I got him mixed up with someone who sang with Tayla Lynn on her album Tayla Lynn sings Loretta Lynn
Four I love the way you think.

Some people are lucky enough to learn that "the most important things in life aren't really *things* at all." :) @ 5:54? That's a harmonica.
❤ your awesome! You make me feel comfortable! Like Old Dogs, Children, and sipping some Watermelon wine!
Notice with the old microphone, they moved it accordingly. If they were hotting a high note, they'd move it out, and come back in. They manovored it for they voice range.

Check out, I Love, Faster Horses, and the Ballad of Forty Dollars
There is a newer live version where he talks about this song
The old man was basically saying the only good things in life are puppy dogs children and watermelon wine
❤❤❤❤❤
Red Sovine (Teddy Bear) a song you should check out. And Dr Hook (One More Year With Daddy's Little Girl)
You need to try some watermelon and dandelion wine, too, but the best I ever tasted was red rose petal wine.
That’s not the radio version, supposed to be watching Ironside on tv
The instrument was a harmonica.

He is telling the story from the black man's point of view
Aye dude, you've gotta check out The Marine Rapper tracks: God says I'm free, orange is the new black, CWA

try listening to the words of a song and not try to make everything racist
