  • NOTE: The "Ratio" button is now in the "Align" menu! The word "ratio" is shown in that area when two gears are selected. When other elements are selected, the text describes the numbers that appear in the text box above it.
    A tutorial that attempts to explain how gears and chains work. Pulleys and belts, or sprockets and chains; they all work about the same way in the Linkage simulator.

    Does it have a video of the working principle of the excavator?
    working principle of two cylinders and rotary movement.
    when the movement of the first cylinder ends, the movement of the second cylinder begins and finally the rotary movement.

      There is nothing like that in the Linkage software. All of the actuators and motors run at the same time.

    Hi, firstly it is a great program. However, I had tried to use this on two computers with Win7 or Win10 by msi and zip, there is no Gear ratio icon on the tool bar. There is just "Ratio" wording, so I can not use pulley function. But still can use gear function by directly entering the ratio into the textbox. Do I miss something? Thanks.

      I moved the button in the most recent update. Actually, there were two of that button and I removed the one in the Dimensions panel in order to show more information about the value displayed in the box above it. Look in the "Align" menu a bit further right in the toolbar. Click on "Align" and the ratio button is in the list of other alignment, positioning, etc., buttons.
      I'm glad for this comment. I forgot to update this video (somehow) and the reminder is appreciated.
      If you don't need to selected "Chain" then you can type a ratio directly into that text box above where the Ratio button used to be. Just enter 1:2 or 5.6:3.999 or any other ration you need, and hit enter.

    Hi. I have a question. I'm brand new user of this software and I'd like to know if there's a way of seeing the measurements of the lines and diameters of the gears?

    • @rectorsquid
      @rectorsquid  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      On the tool bar, you can find a section called View and a button called Details. Click the Details button and a menu will appear with a lot of viewing options. Click on the Dimensions or Auto Dimensions item and that will make the program display dimensions, measurements, etc., for just about everything. That includes gear radii (radius', radiuses?).
      There are also dimension lines you can add for showing simpler measurements. Let me know if that help. You can also email me at the address in the "about" box that is accessible using the little exclamation point in the upper right corner of the window.

    I was excited to find this program but the instructional videos are not very helpful. I am using version 3.11.3 I cannot figure out how to bring up the belt/chain window. Please make videos that walk us through things step by step. I believe this program will help me with projects, once I figure it out.

      Joe Jones select two gears then click on the Align button. There is an item in the menu called Ratio to open that window.
      It’s hard to remake the entire video when the location of a single button is changed in the software. I’ll try to call more attention to that change somehow.

    • @rectorsquid
      @rectorsquid  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe, Also keep in mind that the gears must be on the same link to mesh together. the software can't handle gears that could come into contact and then come apart while the mechanism is moving. I'll try to make a new gear video someday but making videos is not at the top of my list - I'd much rather be adding cool features like cams and Bezier curve sliding connector paths to the software.

    Can you make a reciprocating rack and pinion?

    • @rectorsquid

      Sorry but there is no support for rack and pinion gearing in this software. I might add it in the future but not anytime soon.

    Hi David Is it possible to have a rotating input anchor with a gear on it that doesn't rotate with the anchor? I deally the unit will have a shaft with one fixed and one driven gear on it and I'm trying to work out all the other components I suppose its like a planetary with a planet around a sun but i'm missing the sauce that makes it work in lnkage. Edi: I think I see another video that is closer to what I wanted to do here. I think I may have to drive this from outside instead of a driven anchor.

    • @rectorsquid
      @rectorsquid  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It is not possible at this time. I haven't figured out the best way to allow for that so you will have to work round it from "outside" like you suggested. Just use a non-rotating input anchor for that connector and use another rotating input to next to it to drive a gear on it. You can have multiple different gears on a connector so it should work fine. Send me an email at the address in the "about" box or in the PDF documentation and I can reply with an example mechanism for you. I really should add a checkbox to the link and gear properties to allow for any link or gear to spin freely on an input.

    Trying to copy just the shovel head of the sample included with the program. Although I copy the sample link for link with anchors, etc, when I try to run it, all I get are the red warnings on almost all links. I've gone through almost all tutorials and the manual, but can't figure this out. Been on the computer too long and am missing something simple, I'm sure. Running Win7 with the latest version of the program. At first I thought it was a linkage connection problem, but the program defaults to automatic connections.

    • @rectorsquid
      @rectorsquid  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you simulate a mechanism, all of the links must be predictable during the simulation. If a link has two connectors and one is an anchor and the other is just sticking out into space, it won't simulate because there's no way to know where to put that second connector. The simulator does not handle gravity. That could be the problem. The other possible problem, which is probably not happening for you, is that a mechanism might bind. Links cannot stretch or compress so if the links can't reach each other for part of the simulation, or push past each other, the simulation won't work. Feel free to find my email address in the "about..." box or in the documentation and send me what you have. I can point out the problem.

    • @rectorsquid
      @rectorsquid  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The automatic connections "auto-join" only works when connectors are exactly on top of each other visually. Pleas send me a file with the mechanism in it and I'll let you know what went wrong. Maybe there's a bug I need to fix so please send it even if you don' want to use the software anymore. My email address is in the "about" information.

    Hi, Thank you very much for this valuable skill. currently i am dealing with a seedling trans-planter mechanism having dwell occurrence while the input link rotates the 360 degree. i don't know how to add this to my mechanism. Moreover i want to measure the angle transmission for successive links. Kindly guide me. your kind response would straighten my path.

    • @rectorsquid
      @rectorsquid  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can find my email in the software and in the documentation. Feel free to send me more information about what you want to do because I don't quite understand yet. There is no way to export or log the angles but you should be able to export motion path data and then compute the angles of the connectors using some simple math.

  • @kamalrasool8789
    @kamalrasool8789 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    How can i find the trace path of drawn linkage mechanism.? and the transmission of angles during simulation.

    • @rectorsquid
      @rectorsquid  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The trace path can be exported from the Export menu. The exported motion path data is in CSV format unless you change a setting to use an older less useful format. Only those motion paths that are drawn in the mechanism are exported.

    Hi David, I currently use the 3.7.10 version of Linkages and the problem is it quite often not responding and I have to restart the program. So I hope you can fix it soon.
    P/S: I'm using Win 7 64 bit

      Any idea what you are doing at the time it fails? I just found a bug that crashes it if you drag connectors right after splitting one but I have not created an update yet. Feel free to find my email address in the documentation or in the "About" box and tell me more info. Any help is much appreciated.

    • @rectorsquid
      @rectorsquid  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you cannot select things in the mechanism, check to see if the "mechanism" checkbox in the "edit" area of the toolbar is checked. If that is not checked, you cannot edit mechanism parts. Also, see if you can drop in any new parts. I'm trying to figure out what could go wrong to make this sort of problem happen on its own and that is the only way to make it happen on purpose.

    Is it possible to add a crossed belt?

    • @rectorsquid
      @rectorsquid  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Sorry, no.
      You can get that effect by just using gears. They might appear the wrong size for what you will eventually build, but the end result will be the same.

    • @rectorsquid
      @rectorsquid  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Unfortunately, it is not. But you can fake it using big gears. It won't look right but it should work exactly like a crossed belt.
