    This classic scene was uploaded by the young man killed in the Manchester terrorist attack. Very sad.

    I just wanted to take a moment to pay tribute to Martyn who I "knew" thru following him on social media and I was just revisiting some of my favorite uploads of his today......this one being my absolute favorite lol
    We seemed to share a common sense of humor and appreciation for camp. I'll definitely miss his posts but as long as TH-cam keeps his channel I can look back and laugh like I'm sure he did

    I just fell down a rabbit hole of video essaysss and wanted to stop by and leave a remark about how even those with no ties to Martyn, with no interests in common with Martyn, is learning about the tragedy and the kind of person he was.
    Rest in Peace Martyn. I hope to one day channel half the energy you did.

    Wow. These are the sort of moments you just don't get on the Street these days. Now every other episode is a murder or an accident. The idea of great drama emerging from characters and relationships is sadly out of fashion.

    • @stevebbuk
      @stevebbuk 7 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      I quite agree, and how well acted. In retrospect it was the beginning of the end because without Bet Lynch the Street became nothing.

      @Mr Spoon Well you've missed many other big names the show was deprived of: Elsie Tanner, Ena Sharples and Albert Tatlock ( Phylis and Percy tried their best but they were no match for them), Len Fairclough, Ray Langton, Brian Tilsley and I'm sure there were others. By the way: when was this scene aired? It was probably the best for many a year.

    • @kaysmith8992

      It's not the murders or accidents, it's the ridiculous filler stories in between, like Jenny and Ronnie's torally random affair this week (after months of watching Jenny care for her husband), or Tracey's 'comical' lesbian one-night-stand last year. The murderers/villains are usually well-acted, but these daft filler domestics are turning Corrie into a joke.

    Some would say this is quite tame for Corrie these days, but really this is the true drama we need in 2018. Bet and Rita had been friends for years and Rita backing out of the pub sale practically undid their friendship in a matter of minutes. All they had been through, specifically Alan Bradley's reign of terror and Bet's divorce from Alec, didn't seem to matter in this scene, and that's terribly sad all on its own.

      it happens though, i have seen great sibling relationships dissolve over huge disputes. As my mum used to say if somebody does 100 good things for you and 1 bad thing what will be the one you remember -the 100 good things or the bad thing??

      I had always presumed Annie Walker made a good living from the Rovers Return but I suppose times changed when the supermarkets moved into the market. The storyline was completely wrong (though superbly acted) because Bet was the Street.

    This was the last hurrah for Corrie ..from this point on it went rapidly downhill to the mess we have now .. I have been a fan all my life but finally stopped watching it in 2011 when it just became a series of murders, revenge and lost all of it's character driven plots

    • @nativenewlondoner
      @nativenewlondoner 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      The Street is an absolutely unmitigated mess now, it's sad to look back at how good it was. The worst thing is, ITV and the writers seem to think that it's the best thing since sliced loaf. You have to wonder about the old cast who have watched the slide in quality up close.

    I remember this episode when it was first screened and so much miss these days of Corrie. I went to Manchester once, years ago and visited many Corrie locations and met stars. Sadly much of the show is junk today, too many murders and bed hopping. I feel it started to become like this when the Battersbys arrived in 1997.

    • @robertprees603

      Very true. People often say that was when the Corrie of today was born, when the Battersbys arrived and it became a Northern EastEnders.

    • @shanefolan
      @shanefolan 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@Uksoapfan but the show pre 1997 could not survive-they had to change. If you look at the Corrie of 95-96 today it was too light hearted and romantic for it ever to survive today and detached from reality in that it seemed stuck in the 60s. The same goes for Eastenders-if you look at the 80s Eastenders it was much too slow moving and wouldn't survive today. TV markets change-that's just the way it is.

    • @shanefolan
      @shanefolan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr Spoon they get about 8 million an episode, that's not dismal by today's standards,infact it's very good ,times have changed. Corrie of yesteryear was slower moving and much less dramatic,that wouldn't work these days. Audiences were bigger but that's why most people only had 4-5 channels and no internet.

    • @shanefolan
      @shanefolan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Mr Spoon But you aren't listen to what I'm saying- you are sitting idealizing the pre 1997 Corrie as a holy grail when it wasn't and looking at it with rose tinted glasses. By 1996 critics were slamming it and their ratings were going into a long term decline simply because it wasn't at the tone of rivals like Eastenders and Brookside which was getting the attention,even Emmerdale was getting big attention but Corrie was seen as boring and stuck in the past.
      Plus tv is very different to what it was in the 90s and earlier 2000s, Corrie averages about 7-8 million viewers today so that is not 'a few', it's a very decent figure for terrestrial tv these days. If you were to revert Corrie to its 1995 format today with less drama,slow moving direction and focus on older characters it wouldn't work. Even Eastenders of the 80s and earlier 90s wouldn't work today, the director Sean O connor tried to return Eastenders to its former state in 2016 and viewing figures went into decline. Soap figures have went into decline simply because there's now much more choice. Industries change -that's the way it is.

      @@kaysmith8992 The script writer's have turned the character of Gail into a joke over the past 15 years or so. Remember this was the woman who could stand up to poison Ivy, there were some great storyline she was given over the years - living with the great corrie legend Elsie Tanner, Brian's death and aftermath, Martin and the lunatic nanny, the Richard Hillman saga which was probably her last decent plot.

    • @shanefolan9175
      @shanefolan9175 8 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@murphy9039 I wouldn't agree, I quit watching corrie around early 2013/14 but they gave Gail some great stuff after Hillman which was 2003. The story where she was blamed for Joe's murder in 2010 was great, or David sending her the cards and her struggles to parent him during his delinquent era were some great stuff along with her feuds with Aileen Grimshaw namely their 2004 fight. Her affair with Lewis too and her being set up by him was great...
      I agree that Hillman was her best plot but in fairness it was a storyline that was 1 of the most memorable and acclaimed not only in British soaps but on British television. So nothing would never match that again for her. I not watched it in well over a decade now so I've no idea how her character has gone since that.
