Discovering Bill Evans Part 3: Danny Boy

  • In this video, we pick apart Bill's 1962 recording of Danny Boy from the album Empathy that he made with Shelly Manne and Monty Budwig. We uncover some important elements of his solo piano playing, as well as some insight into his trio playing. The most important element of this recording in my opinion is the way he makes you...........wait for it.

    It is so wonderful to find another person who is so obviously moved by the beauty, sensitivity, and intellect that Bill Evans infused in his playing. And there's nothing more revealing of that than this sort of careful transcription and analysis. THANK YOU for taking the time to share your love and appreciation of his wonderful music with us all. This video made my heart sing!

      Well said Ray - it is a joy to hear Aimee demonstrate the voicings so lovingly. Bill Evans was some kind of genius and Aimee kind of translates that to us. Its just exquisite and teaches us to really extend our ears!

    My Dear Aimee, when you say : " it's almost like he ...", you're showing surprise that he (Bill, God bless him) doesn't refer to any cadence (any kind of II-V-I) expected. But that's exactly what he does. I think he must have had a twinkle in his eye when he did a massive II-V-I in the original key - (Bb) - Fm7 (outside)Cm7/F7 ( implied melodically and not harmonically) leading to a Bb triad on the underlying Cm7. Superimposed triad chords. Otherwise, I immensely enjoy your videos and appreciate your approach. You're lucky yo have such an ear. All the best from Paris.

    Love these "discovering" videos, Aimee (as so many of your videos). Any chance of seeing a "discovering" video for Lennie Tristano, Art Tatum, or Andrew Hill? Or maybe even Sun Ra, Paul Bley, or Cecil Taylor? May be further 'out' than some viewer's may like, but I'd love to see your analysis.

    Love this Aimee! Your comments about longing are spot-on. And Danny Boy is a song about longing, so even more appropriate. Danny Boy is such a tear jerker, but especially Bill's rendition. I once tried to learn it, but became frustrated and gave up. You talent is so impressive. Thank you for sharing it with us! For another very sensitive treatment of Danny Boy, listen to Tony Bennett on his album "Jazz". Herbie Hancock is the pianist on that version. His harmonies are so rich! It's not Bill, but every bit as valid and satisfying! Thank you!!

    When I was a kid (er, 55 years ago) my dad always told me this was his favourite piece - he’d only have known the most basic harmonies. I never really got it at the time….there was far too much other music going on. And here I am after all these years of studying music from Bach to Rach, deciding he was right after all. What would he have made of these piercing harmonies? and how they enhance the music even more. I hope he’d have agreed. So good to see the eloquent comments here from others similarly caught up by its timeless magic. Brilliant analysis Aimee. I had a couple of lessons with you a long time ago and remember how charming and clever you are. Hope all good. And thanks.

    Bill was too creative to be playing a Bbmajor over a Bb root because he just "knows" having the D bass is the kind of subtle tonality so characteristic in his p[aying.

    Aimee - that journey (through the song) was absolutely beautiful. The piano sound from your recording is wonderful. Its as if we are sitting with Bill Evans himself - you are speaking on his behalf and you are teaching us to expand our listening as well as relishing the delay tactic (that longing for the resolution, almost teasing us). Wow so much credit Aimee. If you had never done any other video (and I know you've done so many) this alone would have been a gift to the world to all scholars of piano music and song. I would love to purchase the transcription but it is suggested that this is not possible. Ah well I will study a few bars/tonal palettes and chord expansions! Its a gold mine! Thanks so much for posting this. What makes this so attractive is your enthusiam, so clearly demonstrated in your voice. This is just a classic video!

    This seems almost quintessential Bill Evans -- the ineffable beauty combined with such a depth of longing, so consistent with the tune. That quick but smooth modulation, combined with the awesome tempo change, just blow me away. I have such respect for your skill and patience as a transcriber, Aimee! I feel like my ear is decent, but no way do I think I'd be able to discern exactly what Evans is doing in some spots here. I would love to know if there is any way I could get a copy of your transcription.

    thanks Aimee - what a great discovery to find you here! I'm a long time fan of Bill's and whilst I've mostly hung up my jazz piano hat (in fact I'm working on this tune for the guitar with the least chords possible!), I remain fascinated by his playing, and also by any insightful and inspiring music teaching. Thank you for opening my eyes and ears to even more depth in Bill's playing (I think I only heard a long, exploratory solo piano version of this tune from another album of his), and keep up the great work!

    I Love this video Aimee. Discovered a mistake that makes it even better. Checking back to the original recording the bass comes in already after 40 seconds, which actually makes the impression less understated since he plays root notes on the one. Must say I prefer your airy version, the brain fills in the gaps!

    This is simply a joy to watch and listen to. Such great insights, delivered at a pace that suits the music/mood! I'm inspired to learn this now - currently learning a piano version of Ravel's Pavane Pour un Infant Defunte, which I think might be the most beautiful short piece of music ever written. This will fit alongside it so well, as I can hear many parallels between Evans's and Ravel's approach to chords/harmony. Diolch yn fawr i chi, Aimee.

    I always loved Bill Evans for his unique sense of beauty and his incredible voicings. This is one Bills very best. It’s really exciting to watch the analysis Aimee. And I just love when you go “ohh” over that C13 chords. That’s just how I feel myself. Many thanks!

    • @victorgrauer5834
      @victorgrauer5834 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The key word here is "voicings." Too often a chord progression is indicated simply by noting the root along with certain upper parts, but almost any chord can work within a given tonal context if the voicing is right. Stravinsky learned this early on and Evans has certainly mastered it. In any case, I want to express my admiration and gratitude to Aimee for all her hard work and sensitivity to so many of the subtleties of Evans harmonies -- and voicings.

    In one of his renditions of this, he played in six different keys! What was "noteworthy" was that in changing from key to key he didn't maintain the same inner voices so as to lend a more creative approach demonstrating that he was incontrovertibly one of the most creative players ever.

  • @boykinboykin3053

    Aimee, do you feel like players are now rediscovering Bill Evans? He seems to have been neglected for a couple of generations. The same with McCoy Tyner. The Rebirth of romanticism? And beauty? Prediction: Ahmad Jamal is next. As a jazz singer and arranger, it's lovely to hear players pursuing sounds that are very rich, reveal the divine soul And are immediately accessible to audiences, of jazz hip and non-save ears. They hear beauty and understand and feel without intellectual stress. And the player is delightfully challenged. No putdown on other styles, but even NeoSoul seems to be about the pursuit of beauty and groove. I also find it wonderful that players are digging into Brother Ray and Dr John for sofisticated, basically unaltered blusiness. And you're directing through so many of those doors. Thank you, Maestro. (tip of the day :Ray Bryant solo blues.) Thanx for your contribution to JazzEducation/Inspiration. (Missionary Baptist JazzSinger exiled in Germany 😎) 🌹🌹🌹

    Keith Jarrett is the ultimate on this tune and any tune. He’s way beyond Bill Evans and anyone else.

    • @decibelpresents
      @decibelpresents ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, Keith improved it with his own imprimatur, but if you listen to both, you can tell that Evans was the source of Keith’s rendition. You’d have to be tone deaf not to hear the stark similarity. Even Keith’s pacing follows Bill’s version. Play them side by side and you’ll hear it.

    • @chuckc7375
      @chuckc7375 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@decibelpresents I’m not tone deaf , and I didn’t say that could have been influenced by Evian’s , I only said that he is beyond Bill Evans and that is just my opinion. I’ve been a musician longer than you’ve been alive so you implying that I’m tone deaf is not called for.

    Here Evans plays the inspiration of this wonderful song, which is deepest love and longing. Without a single word, he creates poetry, it's unimaginably beautiful, like life itself. . . . . .
