Nothing against this fine cast but you can never top the shock value of the 1964 original. You had to be there, in 1964, with the recent background of the Cuban missile crisis and the JFK assassination and the fear of the USSR’s ever-growing military might (so we thought) to properly appreciate the film.
yeah, if you read READER'S DIGEST , the Russians were 10-feet tall and USSR had a 1500-ship navy and a bunch of MIRVs/FOBs and they were coming to kick our asses and it was all JCarter's fault..
Now we see in Ukraine, that had Schultz , Klink, Burkhalter and Hochstetter actually gotten sent to Russian Front nowadays, they could probably take Putin's Russians anyway..
@@KateLicker True. RD was always fretting about the number of Soviet missiles. JFK campaigned effectively in 1960 on a “missile gap” that mysteriously disappeared after he took office. The USSR early spectacular success in space flight, along with the sputtering pre-NASA efforts of Army, Navy, and Air Force, was pretty scary for the lay public.
@@walterappling6230forgot about the 'missile gap', even though I've heard the expression.....but never knew it was a JFK campaign hobby-horse..
@@KateLicker Before the ‘Credibility Gap’ there was the ‘Missile Gap’. So-called Gaps were a thing until overtaken by Watergate and the endless dumb -Gate references since then. STEM hysteria was big then too. Of course we didn’t call it STEM. It was a Science Gap or a Skills Gap. USSR cranked out far more engineers and scientists than we did. Supposedly.
Früher war alles .... blablabla
Fun fact: The computer in the command center is made up from components of a real IBM AN/FSQ-7 Combat Direction Central, built in 1954 to protect the U.S. from Soviet bomber attack. It was the largest and heaviest computer system ever built, the full system weighed 6,000 tons, and took up an entire floor of a bomb-proof blockhouse. Components of decommissioned systems were sold for scrap and bought by film and television production companies who wanted futuristic looking computers, despite the fact they were built in the 1950s.
I haven't seen this remake but it doesn't look as good as the original "Fail-Safe". The original was just plain scary.
I just saw the original for the first time. I don't care to watch anything that that nut Clooney's in. All the original old classics are better than the remakes, like The Day the Earth Stood Still & The Manchurian Candidate.
Wow I didn't know they did a remake! I can't imagine how they could improve on the original masterpiece but the trailer looks good enough for me to check it out. Love the actors they got for this version.
They didn't really try to improve it all, so it was pretty good. It was a live broadcast that was sort of a TV stunt.
Live on CBS in April 2000. Available on DVD
Let's try to remember that even though it is almost a shot-for-shot remake....it was broadcast LIVE ON AIR.
It has that almost "soap opera" quality to it due to the lighting and sophistication that goes into a made-for-TV movie. I don't know the technical terms to describe it but you guys know what I mean. If there was a mistake made, they just had to air it.... and move past it, somehow.
Almost like Playhouse 90.
For some reason that "soap opera" quality effect made you think you are actually watching something real...not a staged stuff.
I watched and was stunned back then. It make you think about how close the world was at mutual annihilation
@@williamcrowe2576 Was the first CBS drama to air live since "Playhouse 90".
@@williamcrowe2576 I saw a thing THE MISSILES OF OCTOBER and another about the USS Pablo and the North Koreans starring Hal Holbrooke..stagey, low budg, no outdoors shots..was that Playhouse 90?
As far as the original goes, Sidney Lumet doesn't get the attention he deserves. Dog Day Afternoon, 12 Angry Men, Network, Before The Devil Knows You're Dead, Family Business, Serpico, the brilliant and underrated Running On Empty, as well as Fail/Safe - all great films.
He gets plenty of attention
this film is worthy of an Oscar , his argument , dialogue , action, keep you alert all the time , but without being so sophisticated visual effects .
Not to mention the 'walk through' performances of everyone in the cast and Clooney's insistence on his closeups.. Yeah, Oscar stuff for sure. hahaha
Excellent reinterpretation of the 1964 original film
An all star cast, but also George Clooney.
well that spoils it somewhat..
I haven't seen the remake, but the actors who made the original in 1964 surely were slightly more realistic. (The US President's translator should have been played by Jude Law)
I had never known till today that a reboot of "Fail Safe" was done
It's a good film, but I prefer the original. In my view the plot was much more plausible in the 1960s, especially since the Cuban Missile Crisis was at the time a recent memory. I recall my father coming home from work at San Francisco International during the crisis and telling my mother that bombers (B-47s I think) had deployed there. In retrospect, I surmise that their arrival was part of SAC's bomber dispersal plan to complicate a Soviet first strike against USAF bomber bases. When the original film reached the theaters, SAC had the B-58 bomber capable of mach-2 supersonic dash toward its target and the mach-3 XB-70 was a work in progress. I'm not saying nuclear war, accidental or deliberate, is implausible. I feel otherwise, but I doubt a US bomber group penetrating Russia would be the culprit of an accidental war today. That said, the remake is a good movie, but the original brings back memories of air raid alerts, sirens wailing, duck and cover cartoons in school, Civil Defense wardens, and my sisters walking home with me from school during evacuation rehearsals. Finally, the cockpit of the lead aircraft in Group 6 is dark and forbidding in the original, while the cockpit in the remake appears more like a brightly lit conference room, but, hey, that's just my opinion.
there was at least one footage shot of B58 Hustler in the 60s movie..
I watched it when it was live. It was a very interesting stunt I wouldn't mind seeing again.
And PUtin laughs so hard that a nuclear explosion sound is silent in comparasion.
Going to say that i don't usually like remakes of an original movie but this one surpasses my expectations....
THE GETAWAY remake was ok, I thought..
I remember staying glued to my TV when this was shown. I thought it was as good as the '64 original. I only wish this had encouraged other networks to do more live plays.
I have the 1962 version on DVD; maybe I'll buy the 2000 one. You're right though about Fonda, Hagman, and O'Herlihy; but, don't forget Dom De Luise (NEVER saw him in a serious role before) and Walter Mathau and Sorrelle Booke (aka "Boss Hogg"). Outstanding film.
Couldn't Boss Hogg just send Roscoe out to pull the B52 over?
Had the Lumet version never existed, this would be the definitive take.Great adaptation but not as good as the original. Definitely worth a viewing.
I seen this when it first aired and i still loved it yes it was live but well made movie i like both versions
It's a great show then and now even more so
The original movie would have a lot more significance to someone who was around back then. Duck n Cover, Cuban missile crisis, Eastern Europe. The Russians were the big bad boogie man. Al-Qaeda, Taliban, Iran all rolled into one would comparably be choir boys. This movie was very scary to many back then.
Both - a theatrical play live on TV (CBS). :)
Buy the DVD on Amazon ... if you're still around in 2012.
2020
2021
Save your money and just watch the original.
2022 called. What is a DVD?
@@JanBruunAndersen Now that shit is hilarious
Agree.
I remember when THIS re-boot came out.......been 21 years!!! 2021P
I thought the original was great; however, if this version is on TV again, I'll check it out too; but I'm sure you're right about the original being better. It's the ONLY war movie, so far, that ever scared me. Thanks again.
Only have seen the trailer which scared me plenty.
The 1964 version also scared the crap out of me. I can’t imagine the emotional strain of divulging Top Secret weapons capability to the enemy so that they could shoot down and kill our own planes. Or the gargantuan burden of dropping a Nuke on other Americans just to make it “fair” for the Soviets.
@@natj8096 Threads? I might have to check this out.

@@StrayCatOrwell thank you. I now realize why it’s called Threads
A weird instance where the remake and original are both good and you cant prefer one over the other even If the remake is shot for shot that makes it even harder to chose
Not possible, a compass with a chronometer would give an accurate latitude and a sextant would give the longitudinal information, all bomber crews and naval ships used to carry them as they are not prone to jamming at all. It's not pinpoint accuracy but with a 10 megaton warhead, it's not an issue.
Got them crossed. Sextant for latitude, chronometer for longitude.
i did not know that there was a remake of the original movie. Where was I? Oh, out at sea on a submarine.
On The Beach
That’s why DVDs and streaming services were invented
Your best chance of seeing both is purchasing DVDs.
The 1964 film DVD has commentary from director Sidney Lumet and other features.
The TV production is also on DVD at an even cheaper price. The TV version was an salute of sorts to the days of live television programming and shows such as "Playhouse 90".
In particular, Henry Fonda is much more convincing as president. Larry Hagman is superb as the translator. And toward the end, the voice of Dan O'Herlily as "Blackie" is chilling.
Honestly, after the Sydney Lumet film, what can they do?
I'm usually down on remakes. This one looks like a worthwhile watch!!
I knew about the 1964 movie, but I never heard of this remake until today. Was this on TV or in the theater?
I also have a big interest in history of the cold war.
the bizarre thing is...to be in a place nowadays where we look back on THAT with a sense of nostalgia?
I still call Czech/Slovakia republics Czechoslovakia, and anything Serbia/Croatia etc..'Yugoslavia"...and the Russians 'the Soviets". The world made more sense back then..and it was pretty crazy then..
Never got to see it as I was working :(
What, was that time pilot they were playing in the war room?
Remake was awesome
Hmmmmm ill have to see if i can find the DVD..
Where can l watch it
Amazon has it.
April 16 is in two days
Only improvement would have been Tom Arnold as The President.
Excellent choice of actors for the characters...except Dreyfus for the president.
Live TV in April 2000
Look or sound familiar in 2022?
How does this compare to the original?
A remake
Why did TH-cam remove this movie??! Greedy mofos.
+Eric M Check Putlocker, they have a copy.
+paul mcenroe thanks found it, found it but still wish it was on youtube. i watch most videos on youtube
+Eric M I know. Lucky i've seen it and the Fonda one. They are amazing.
@@Erin-bc8ic yeah, me too...and I'm not giving my credit card for 'verification' to any of those 'free' dodgy links..
does anyoneknow if the full movie is still on you tube i had it in my playlist and youtube deleted it.thanks
Did you find it again? Im having the same issue, cant find it anymore...
no i didnt its that stupid copywright thing again
frgezr4thetzh cant find it anywhere on line
Opinion: the TV production was good, but the 1964 film version is much better ... more believable and more frightening.
The music they use to promote it in this is horrible. Especially since the teleplay used little to no music. That said, a superlative effort on the part of all involved. Pretty riveting LIVE television.
I saw this when it came out on television, I believe it was a two part (two day) movie. I watched it late I had (and still) have a crush on Noah Wyle (known from his ER days).
why remake this Gem??
Is this a good movie? If so I'm gonna try to find it on AppleTV or Netflix. Hopefully one of them has it.
Andy Smith Oh, and the answer to "why did TH-cam remove it??". Because TH-cam is owned by Google, and if folks REALLY knew how powerful Google has become and the private and confidential information they have on every human on this planet, you would be protesting and fighting to take Google DOWN! They are hardcore liberals that are very tight with the Obamas and the Clintons (Bill---not that bitch Hillary. She's going to Federal Prison anyway). But mark my words.....you will see Google explode with power over the next few years and you won't believe it. Only THE PEOPLE can take our country back and follow the Constitution, just as every president has SWORN to do but refuses to do it----especially that dickhead Obama.
+Andy Smith it is very good Andy.
+Andy Smith very good movie
+justin smith Cool. Thanks!
+Andy Smith Uhh no I don't think that crazy rant is it at all. Copyright bro
Professor Grossbelch
Yeah the main problem was making Dreyfus the president.
have we had a Jew for POTUS yet?
Why not remake “Wizard of Oz” while you’re at it? Silly they remade it. It feels like a student film.
movie sort of strengthened my love for my country.... (U.S.A)
I've been researching into how to remote monitor cell phones and found a fantastic resource at Freds Fail Safe (check it out on google)
This film was so technicly inacurate that i could cry
Great fukkin cast
Kubrick? Is that you?
Kubrick did not make FAIL SAFE...
@@KateLicker yes he did
Noke bomber pilots were kamikaze ?
no..the missions were meant to be 2-way trips, survivable...even though they maybe knew there was nothing besides horror to return to..
@metro2033fan Ahem, Fonda is waayyy better
Are studios so out of ideas, that they have make an inferior new version of a classic?
yes, they are out of ideas, no doubt...And I can't talk, because I cannot suggest anything new either...I'm floored that OPPENHEIMER seems to be a blockbuster success...anyone came to me for financing on that, I'd have either laughed at them or called a white truck..
Is it a fake??
no...2000 remake, listed on imdb..
Very few things are better than the original except for Die Hard 2.
THE GETAWAY 1990s was ok..
This film is a remake. Fail-safe from 1964 is much better...
it's a remake but still can't beat the best film on cold war, Dr. Strangelove.
no reason to remake a perfect movie. This is a FAIL a shadow, a turd
Embarrassing re-make to a classic film starring Henry Fonda . I'm sure it will sell for a dollar from a shelf at wallmart.
Funny I watched the original yesterday and came here to see if I'd like to see this which the trailer was enough to make clear I didn. OTOH I rewatched the The Day the Earth Stood Still remake and parts of the original and found them both entertaining and the poor reviews of the remake unwarranted. A culture that dwells in the past is half dead and one that can't even reproduce it's former level of attainment is worse off than that. Partly on this one the cast compares poorly to the original and it's maybe not a fair comparison with Lumet vs. some TV knock-off director. OTOH production values after 60 years were ofc incomparably better on the other but the writing wasn't with the laughable bit about the chinese alien agent having fallen in love with humanity and wanting to die with it which wouldn have washed in 1951 although Klatu/Rennie referring to "the Almighty" did. Thankfully that wouldn wash in 2008.
Pretty bad remake. The original is superior.
20 secons into this trailer I knew it would be crap
Shot-By-Shot remakes are lazy, cheap, unoriginal, waste of talent, waste of money and disgusting.
George Clooney needs to repent for making this God Awful remake!!!!!
he needs to repent for being a sanctimonious moaning Hollywood liberal hypocrite living the actual are you serious "villa in Tuscany" cliche too..oh, yeah...did I mention married to Arab muslim 'human-rights lawyer"
GOD BLESS HOLY RUSSIA
