  • One might argue that the heart of modern civilization, its supreme fetish, is the notion of the individual. The independent self. The liberal rationalist self. Cut off from ecological relations, pixelated within a flattened space designed for human social experiments, the individual crystallizes modern notions of linear time, political projects around identity, anthropocentric ideas about agency, and specific inoculatory notions of care and wellbeing.
Join us on January 19, 2023 (8:00 AM - 9:00 AM PST / 11:00 AM - 12:00 PM ET / 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM CET) for our next event in the ongoing series the Edges in the Middle, where Indy Johar of Dark Matter Labs and Global Senior Fellow Bayo Akomolafe will explore a set of questions about the self: what if the self is not as estranged or as independent as we often suppose it is? If we are to take seriously notions of entanglement and ecological imbrications, how do we come to see identity? What might this mean for democracy, for our understanding of our roles as temporality-makers (instead of just inhabitants of fixed, monolithic time), for the Anthropocene, and for the future?
Registration is free. A link to gain access to the virtual event will be sent via email before the event. Forum members will have exclusive access to engage with Bayo and Indy virtually after the conversation takes place in a private Zoom room. More details on this coming soon.

“This is not just some heady philosophical affair with words, this is really something that is tethered to our deepest aspirations for a world that works for not just humans ..for multiple life forms, it is tethered to our hope for beauty, for thriving and living well!”

As civilisation itself is predicated on a separate and separating self, any move towards recognising entanglement will lead to a scaling down of civilisation and a reduction in populations.

Yes! BUT... not 'or' only surely, also 'and'...

Maybe ‘we’ need a pause from escaping the plantation or any systemic oppression? A pause where emotional and physical safety can settle in. Where a sense of self and interconnectedness ( vs entanglement) can arise from love, safety, curiosity, and rather than fear and survival. I would love to hear your thoughts on this. It (a pause) seems a place of opportunity and responsibility in terms of co-creating new ways of being where humans are sharing power.
