I read this story over 40 years ago & it’s quite prophetic of the times we are currently living in. I heard a comparison yesterday of Queen at the band aid concert in the 80s and concerts today. Everyone who attended band aid still talk about how amazing it was, the atmosphere, the overall “buzz” (including my hubby) and that they’re will probably never be a concert to compare because people all too busy with their smart phones, recording, taking photos, or posting rather than being in the moment & and enjoying the experience.

Thank you for reviewing this again in these prescient times. There are so many anomalies in today's life in countries around the world. It's extraordinary work, especially given current conditions, the author's best known work and the fact it was written in 1909. The thought that the main character asks why people physically travelled to experience things when one could have experiences brought to them. Shape of things to come? Then again from watching the Jetsons as a child, thought by now our lives would be rather different than they are. Yesterday's launch 40 years ago perhaps, (wry smile here) wish I was younger!

I am a Product Owner for a piece of software and I am constantly agitated that the site is built from interdependent components which, if one failed or was discontinued, we’d have to spend tens of thousands on refactoring.

I just got a copy found it on Amazon. I have been looking for it for years. It intrest me because I had to learn the bass part for the Level 42 song "The Machine Stops". I was wondering what the lyrics mean. Now it makes sense.

This story reminds me the Silo Saga. I wonder if the author based it on this story.

This is a very great video but one thing I have to say is, isn't nature the biggest example of ramshackle systems, and patches. Eg The climate change has some animals go extinct other animals evolve to take their place some birds flew on an island because of strong hurricane winds now there's no population there Etc
