In order to spare you the ordeal of sifting through thousands of movies, you should have a poll where viewers could nominate their suggestions for most 90s movie. You could take the top 20 or so, watch them, then make your shortlist. Might stop some of the “why didn’t you include X” comments too.

“Most 70s movie” might be tough because movies were so varied. Taxi Driver, Star Wars, blacksploitation movies, and how does one reconcile Eraserhead?

Dude, I grew up in the 80s. I have personal connections to a lot of 80s movies, and I could quibble with your choices. Doesn't matter. Your Ultimate 80s Movie video was GREAT. I loved it. Lots of smart analysis and context, very funny and entertaining. And it's your video, not anyone else's. If people want to make a video about how Real Genius is the real ultimate 80s movie, please do! I'd watch it. But I'll bet you don't do as much homework as Patrick did.

Wow I'm so happy you want to do other decades. That video was absolutely amazing, the amount of work put into it blew me away. You're crazy enough about movies to have ideas like this and actually do it. We're lucky to have you offering us constantly excellent work. Your videos are basically the pinacle of TH-cam infotainment. As soon as I meet a fellow cinephile I ask them if they know you and promote your channel if they don't. The Heavenly Kid is a movie I remember really well from the early days of renting movies (and renting VCRs for that matter). Born in 1979 I lived this decade and what was big was birthday parties and renting an age-inappropriate movie for the party. The Heavenly Kid was one of these for me. Along with Labamba, Gremlins, Iron Eagle and Scrooge. Loved the 80s video.

Most 80s movie to not come out in the 80s: instead of a movie that portrayed or satirized the era afterwards, there are proto-80s movies that predicted the atheistic and vibe. Prime example: Tommy (1975). It's full of indulgences (and by indulgences I mean cocaine), hard rock/power ballads (note that the while Tommy album was made before The Who discovered synths, the Tommy movie was not), an album 6 years ahead of the movie, and a plot line about being the best and having insane ambition. For a plus: given how iconic 80s arcades are it fits that the main character excels in the arcade stable of pinball.

Quicksilver's been on Tubi for the last several months! And definitely should have been considered--it fits in so many categories that you covered. Also, Where the Boys Are is a remake of a '60s film of the same title so probably not a contender... How old is this guy that he wasn't around for Knight Rider or any of these films?

  • @SHNASTDOG
    @SHNASTDOG ปีที่แล้ว +1

There's so many more contenders. But like he admits...he didn't watch them all. But his research was commendable and the video was fun. I like the the idea that anyone can make their own "most 80s ever is" video and no two videos will be the same.
I actually lived my childhood in the 80s and saw many films in theatres at that time. The most 80s TV show is Beauty and the Beast. Duh. With Ron Pearlman in full make up as a lion man saying "Kathryn". With Kathryn being played by the female protagonist Sarah Conner from Terminator. But the runner ups are Alf and Small wonder, and Webster. I'm not even considering anything that didn't have practical fx or sci fi fantasy theme. Because that wouldn't be THEE most 80s tv show without it. So Manimal would make the list far above Simon and Simon, murder she wrote, and night rider.
Now using that same method for the most 80s movie, in my opinion, basically negates Patricks whole list. It's as if he purposely left out one of the most 80s categories ever. The sci fi, fantasy with fx, esp practical fx. THATS a crucial element for a "most 80s". His list was more like "most 80s movie that was grounded in reality".
There's something to be said about Labyrinth being the most 80s ever. It had the impossible to recreate talent of JIM HENSON who is a God of the 80s and primarily only that decade. It had David Bowie who created songs just for the film.
The sci fi, fantasy element was 90% of the film with a teen protagonist and the special fx were mostly practical, magical, and oh so once in a lifetime 80s!. Not to mention the soundtrack was not just David Bowie originals but a stunningly 80s trademark synth soundtrack as well. When it wasn't 80s pop icon David Bowie in tights...it was synth music.
Additionally I would add that this brings Back to the future back into the Fight. Not only did HughyLewis and the News create original billboard smash hits for that movie. (Power of love and back in time to be exact) But the movie featured iconic actor and teen heart throb Micheal J Fox , and a Delorian ....which was a car you could only get in the 80s. Lol The sci fi aspect and fx were there, and the other 80s tropes were there. Including the "mouse trap" scene as I call it. Where an invention of sorts plays out in a mechanical domino effect with homemade parts to feed the dog or something. Like Ferris Bueller rigging up things. MacGyver..and many others. This was very 80s. Also by Patricks own standards Back to the Future should have been included because it DID take place in the 80s and yet also in the 50s which was the most 80s thing to do at the time, fantasizing about the golden age of the 50s. This ties in perfectly with make America great again reagan and general feelings of the 80s at the time. The Delorian being a nice icon of 80s yuppie capitalism as well. Or one could at least make that connection.
But I'll take that thought even further. Not only would Back to the Future be included in a list that didn't discriminate against sci-fi/fantasy, but so would the sequel. In fact I argue that back to the future 2 is MORE 80s than even the first film.
The fact that it portrays the future and takes place on a universal studio lot with references to Jaws, Nike, and hover boards, holograms, trump tower basically with President biff, and so many other weird 80s things. Including the aging actors with proshetics gimmick. That was popular then.
And of course there is nothing more 80s than a sequel itself.
Hypothetically the only thing more 80s than Labyrinth would be Labyrinth 2 starring Micheal Jackson or Prince as the NEW Goblin King that takes over after Jareth is defeated. With a cast of kids from Punky Brewster going on the quest this time .
And by that measure we might just find out that Captain EO is literally THEE most 80s movie of all time. As it was literally only available in the 80s and at Disneyland, and starred Micheal Jackson, with original music, and had sci fi fantasy practical fx, with 3D glasses. And the 3d was laser precise and actually good. It literally used multiple lasers to actually beam the image into the audience. It was wild. No 3d compares since then. I was there. I still have the Captain EO key ring from that trip to Disney land. That was the 80s.
So I don't need to do a video to tell you that if you rightfully add sci fi and fantasy with fx as a proper prereq then you'd end up with. These as the top 3 most 80s movies.
    1) Captain EO
    2) Labyrinth
    3) Back to the Future II
I think themes of fantasy are far more reflective of the decade than the politics. So Drago is the most 80s Rocky Movie I agree. But Sci Fi and fantasy was the real stamp of the 80s. Esp the Work of Jim Henson and early ILM.
    --------
Now just for fun the most 80s song is
"The Heat is on" by Glenn Fry.
Only to be challenged by "Ghostbusters" by Ray J Parker Jr.

Regarding an item by item review of your video collection, as a physical media collector myself I watch these types of videos all the time. Thatcher and Reagan are really two sides of the same coin.
Even as a child in the early 90s we used to play a game where you'd draw a woman on one hand and a scribble on the other and sing a little rhyme that went "there's Maggie Thatcher [opening the hand up with the drawing of the woman on it]/throw her up and catch her [miming throwing her up in the air and catching her/squish squash/squish squash [rubbing your hands together]/ there's maggie thatcher [putting out your other hand with the scribble on it]."
Not that our own native political figures were much better Charles Haughey, three-time Taoiseach (Prime Minister) of that decade spent much of the 90s and up to his death in court over various corrupt dealings.

Would be interested to discuss how quickly movies released in the early 90s became decidedly "not 80s" movies - how the portrayal of culture / politics / heroes shifted away from what we saw in Top Gun, Flashdance and Rocky IV. Terminator 2 (for example) feels decidedly 90s, not 80s, and we'd barely left the decade...

Maybe it's still too recent, but I don't feel like 00s cinema has any distinct tropes other than "Post-9/11 Grief" and "Lots of Sci-Fi and Fantasy franchises as Hollywood starts the shift towards IP adaptations". Maybe you could also mention the Judd Apatow improv-dialogue style taking over comedies? Overall the 70s and 90s seem like they have more distinct personalities.

Great shoutout for Astro City... I have long pointed to Astro City #2 as my fave issue of Superhero comics ever... and hot take...if James Gunn really wants to launch a new DCU, I would love to see him license Astro City #1 and use that as a starting point for a Superman story to launch the new DCU...
also I am just going to throw out there that when talking about the 70s Punk Scene that the roots of Punk in LA/SF and in Australia both start in the early 70s around the same time as the NYC and the UK scenes and were fairly large and impactful on how rock music developed into the 80s, 90s and beyond... the reason they don't get thought of in the same way as NYC or the UK comes down to the fact that both were not covered in mainstream media the way the UK and NYC have been.
any thoughts on the least 80s films that were produced in the 80s?
FYI on the Quicksliver tip. Kevin Bacon has as a couple of recent TicToks about his quest to find a long forgotten poster for the film that was in a NYC subway... well worth taking a look at...

31:39 the people who watch the video of a supposedly proper film maker? 😂 And also: 80s lovers!
In addition, just because people comment that they think something should have been mentioned does not mean that they disregard your video or the work you put into it. If you put a video out there with the comment section enabled you invite people to get into dialogue and that is more often than not a good thing (obviously not blind hate comments, but that's not what we are talking about here).
There is also a point to be made that if people take the time to watch the video and comment on it it means that they care about the topic and what you have made. There's no reason to be negative about it.

31:30 this is Patrick's reaction after working on a video for less than 2 months, but professional film directors work on a movie for 2+ years and if they did a franchise movie they will never hear the end of "what about this" questions/"critique".
The genuine frustration makes for a great object lesson.

Just a heads up for anyone planning on buying the World of Wong Kar Wai criterion set, the transfers for several of the movies (including In The Mood For Love, Chungking Express and Fallen Angels) have been completely butchered and changed from what they were originally presented as.
There are plenty of videos you can check out going over the changes between versions, and tbh if you want my opinion literally all of them are for the worse. Please try and view the original theatrical versions of the films if you can (Criterion has released the first two movies I mentioned on Criterion separately, and these original versions are not too hard to track down if you know what I mean).

Thanks for reading my comment Pat! If you ever get around to watching the director’s cut (called Rocky IV: Rocky vs Drago), I hope it’s worthy of adding into a future “updates to past essays” video!
It’s over 40 minutes of different footage, yet only 2 minutes longer overall, and it doesn’t have the robot!

@@jeremyphillips3087 Why on earth would you have more empathy for a billionaire who only has to deal with people being mean online, rather than an entire marginalized group that faces real problems like discrimination, homelessness, violence and daily bigotry?
I don't think you know the definition of bigotry, because me criticizing JK fir being a bigot doesn't make me one.
She isn't being victimized, she's being criticized for spreading hate against a marginalized group.
It's just weird that you care about one wealthy person's feelings more than the suffering and material conditions of thousands of trans people.
Big red flag Jeremy, very sus.

I'm glad you talked about my comment about the influence the Vietnam war had on 80s movies. Didn't really intend it as a criticism, since several of the movies you did talk about had that influence and it may have been a redundant aspect to consider.

It might not be as popular as doing the 70's or 90's, but I would be curious what the most 30's movie is, or the most 50's movie.
A lot fewer films were released then, so it would be fewer to sift through, but the themes and aesthetics of the era might not be quite as common as most internet users don't remember the 50's, let alone the 30's!

RON PERLMAN AS CLAYFACE. I’ve been saying this for years. He voiced him on The Animated Series and a modern movie would probably have him be CG in action scenes anyway.
