  • The image of males in sports is often characterized by macho stereotypes. But what about athletes who don't want to conform to them? In 2020, U.S. volleyball pro Ben Patch spoke openly about being queer. For which he received recognition and praise.

    I miss him a lot as an athlet on the pitch. But quitting the sport for mental health reason just adds up to the image of a reflective fascinating men, who has the courage to question the norm both for men and for the sport. Hope your doing well Ben, your impact will not be forgotten any time soon.
    Your an Icon for many more reasons then just being an exceptional opposite:)))

    I totally love his goofy attitude. He could have improved his OP plays seeing that he was kinda inconsistent there, but I guess that's not gonna happen anymore since he already left volleyball.

    Well, this explains a lot of things-including, probably (and unfortunately), why Ben wasn’t picked for the U.S. Olympic team roster last year. I have a “Ben Patch” national-team jersey that I will continue to wear with pride…just not _that_ kind of pride.

    • @Skybar23

      was Erik Shoji selected ?

    • @khkartc
      @khkartc 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Erik is indispensable and adds cohesion. Ben is a superlative athlete but is viewed by some as a head case and divisive. I think he would have added an _x_ factor to the O team, but obviously someone didn’t see it that way. We’ll see what happens in the next VNL.

    Had he started to pick up a German accent from playing and living over there?

    • @kaito553
      @kaito553 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      been wondering the same thing, bc when i watched some of his previous interviews, his american accent was very prominent compared to the accent he has now. kinda cool how humans subconcsiously adapt certain things like accents when living in a new place

    I never knew that volleyball was the quintessential gay sport in the US. In the Philippines, many people still view volleyball like that.

    • @Itstime1231
      @Itstime1231 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Men's volleyball, though that is changing and only for indoor. If you play Beach Volleyball it is not seen as gay and I don't think most assume indoor volleyball as gay. It is growing in popularity, but outdoor grass/beach is very normal. Indoor is where the stereotypes come in. It is very normal as a girl's sport though, huge, no one is thinking of it as a lesbian sport. Lesbian sports are more like rugby, roller derby, maybe softball, and somewhat pro basketball for whatever reason.
