    I set my global EQ up and gigged it Friday night (Artist MKII combo). I ended up running on .5 watt and bumping the master up a bit. I liked it a hell of a lot. I don't do metal but the power and headroom was right there. We of course mic all of our instruments but me in particular really wowed the crown. Best sound so far. I LOVE the Katana and will probably never go back to tube. The Artist is a bit heavy to carry across the street and into the club but it's well worth it. Thanks for the great vid....made my amp really rock!

    • @Guitarnivore
      @Guitarnivore  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      That's great. That Parametric EQ really opens up a lot of things for all tones. One tip I learned from another TH-camr is if you're not sure which grequency to use, crank the level and then adjust the frequency. The EQ setting in this video used to be my go-to, but his video helped me learn it and understand it better. Check out his video sometime. It might help you dial in better EQ's in the future. I loved the Artist, but yeah, it's big and heavy but that Waza speaker and the global EQ selector are great options, as well as the output option on the back.

    Even with instructions I have never been able to load the tone studio (due to my own challenges with all things digital.) I opted instead to plug into an eq pedal (Wampler Equator) before the amp along with a Keeley 4 knob comp and a boost pedal (Soul Food.) I also run an extra delay and reverb in the effects loop. I hate not having the tone studio and being able to save presets, but the amp sounds great with the pedals. Equalizing patches is so important on this amp to get it sounding right.

    One thing I have noticed about the Katana and digital amps in general, is that 500k pots do not sound as good as 250k pots for any style of music, particularly hard rock and metal. The 250k pots are pretty standard with single coils, but the really get rid of the harshness and brittle tones digital amps often produce with humbuckers when using high gain. Another set up that just sounds killer on the Katana is a strat or Nashville Tele with the bridge and middle series. If you like a warmer more tube like tone for hard rock, this really gets you there and without the mushy tone that playing in series on a valve amp is associated with if you EQ it.

  • @akasgsvirgil9503
    @akasgsvirgil9503 9 หลายเดือนก่อน

    The problem with the Katana is that in order to set it properly and take full advantage of its capabilities, you really have to have a trained ear. You need to be able to hear those "bad" freqs and know how to dial them out with the parametric EQ. The traditional EQ doesn't have the flexibility to isolate and remove the bad frequencies, especially one in particular that shows up when in the amp's hi gain settings. Its a "sizzle" in the upper frequencies that only shows up when the gain is turned up. Its irritating once you hear it because you can't unhear it and its not a good sound either. I've narrowed it down to the factory speaker and the fact that this irritating sound is not present during any of the clean tones.
    It lives in the upper freqs and once you hear it, you can isolate it and remove it if you know how to use the amp's parametric EQ. Note: this cannot be removed by using the amp's traditional EQ that has a fader for each frequency interval. So, if you want to get rid of this irritating noise, you have to learn how a parametric EQ works and how to use it. Both are not easy.
    If you record a lot or make a living with your instrument, you're going to need something a bit better than the Katana. Its a good practice amp, however. If you're a casual player or a weekend warrior, this amp is just fine, with the exception of that irritating noise.

      I came here to say the same thing. They can say EVH or SRV or CPO or... chased a tone, but did they REALLY spend decades finding their tone? No, they did not. You can listen to EVH change his signature brown sound over the years from album to album. You can also hear a cornucopia of tones on each album, if you just listen for them.
      It all reminds me of the people that played Hammond synths and would keep their settings for the resonance rods super secret. In the end though, a good player sounds good regardless of the settings. Just like back then, finding some good setting for your tone widgets is important, but it is still secondary to your skills at composition and playing.
      And that brings me to the real tone setting. How you play. People have obsessed with EVH and his brown tone for decades. I probably had a half dozen guitar player mags that discussed how to get his tone. What I find to be more important is copying his techniques of song writing/composition. I can throw the brown sound on any tune that plays well with distortion and it will sound just fine. It wont sound like EVH though. For that you need to imitate how he writes songs, and maybe how he plays as well.
      But if you spend more than a few minutes looking for the tone you want (in one sitting), then you are "Ross looking for his sound."
