What is GameMaker? 👀
-----------------------------------------------------
GameMaker is the industry’s premier 2D game engine, used by thousands of developers every day to create indie gaming classics like Undertale, Hyper Light Drifter, and Chicory: A Colorful Tale.
It’s completely free, with dozens of written guides and video tutorials to help you bring your games to life.
When your project is complete, you can publish your creations to all major platforms, including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch.

What? A game engine that tries to improve its developer experience and not just monetary gains? Wonderful, keep going
cause they are not wasting the money they earn on useless thing then become desperate to make more money
They are bought by opera, the monetary gain is when they rip your data to china.
Which engine is that? Not this one. They still for years now can't fix their DRM so it wouldn't lag IDE.
@@dacealksnewhat are you talking about? 😂
@@snowcrashcodes check their Tech Support forum. for instance search "lag" in topic: "2024-4-release-thread.111987". they are hell-bent to keep shipping it with DRM which kills it for many and they pretend to not see it.
GUI tools to set up buttons and stuff. Crossing fingers 👀
This.
This is the last completely outdated thing in GM. It is not that everything else is perfect, but the UI process is bad and worsens the overall perception of the engine.
Yes please, making UI in gamemaker has always been painful process, proper GUI toolkit would help a ton.
Not necessary at all. Math and logic is ok.
@@vinniciusrosa8284I mean you could always build your own engine. The point is ease to use (saving time) and limiting road blocks for less skilled people.
@@AL-lh2ht Yes, I know. I understand it because I am doing an open world rpg in C++/SDL and I am losing more time trying to find solutions than making the game itself. It is hard to make the entire engine before really starting the game development. I love Game Maker Studio because it is easy to deal with sounds and animations. No FPS calulation mess. :) Thanks.
Loving that reference for the cost per install 🤣.

GAMEMAKER!
I STARTED TO SCROLL COMMENTS AT THE VERY END OF THIS VIDEO AND GOT PERFECT TIMING OF READING YOUR COMMENT AND SHITTING MY PANTS OFF BY HEARING "GAMEMAKAAAA" DAMN!
@@qweqweqwe12333 They should hire Arnold Schwarzenegger and make TV promo with him for GameMaker ;-)
I'M JUST NOW GETTING TO UI FOR MY GAME. THIS CAME AT THE PERFECT TIME.
Also I vote this become the new default splash 9:30

I really hope we'll be getting IDE plugins this year

I still have hope of being able to execute all the Gamemaker 1.4 projects in Gamemaker 2, this would be a Total Success. Recover hours, days, weeks, months of long work so that version 2 does not update these later.
at this point I think that Gurpreet is the official OC of game maker c:
We will be rebranding as "Gurpreet" in 2024 also
I'm working on an ambitious project using gamemaker. It'll rival Hotline Miami (a successful game that was made on this engine) mark my words.
The Texture Compression you added in this last update for me is a game changer, especially for games with big texture assets. It's buggy for me but I really see the potential with it, biggest most underappreciated feature by far imo.
I really appreciate you guys having CC written for these videos. So often overlooked but really helpful
😇
What program do you use to make games? 09:29

Woah! I've been using Game Maker Studio for 10 years, excellent changes! Looking forward to them. Congratulations, great job.
😂😂😂
Thanks Luxe !
I'd absolutely love a 3d esque system for easy to use layers on a z axis. Right now I simply move layer speeds based on camera position, but would love something more friendly in the level editor.
I'm so glad to be a GameMakerer.
You're a valued GameMakerer Píchon! Bunny Graveyard looks great :)
It's nice that you guys are gonna to add support for other programming languages. I like GML, I just want to learn other programming languages in a familiar environment. Looking forward to the new code editor.
I really love the icon/grid view of the prefab library. It would be awesome if we could get this view mode for the asset browser too! It would make picking out decorative sprites during level design so much easier.
Really great updates. Code editor, prefabs, and plugin support will absolutely make this a very tempting engine choice for me. Keep up the good work.
Glad to hear it Colin!
Prefabs!!! Let's go! That'll save so much time.
1:24 oh the jab at a competitor 😂😂 i love it
The minimap with code preview at 3:56 is awesome!
Game Maker making a good move after a good move. Easily became my engine of choice in the last 12 months!
It will be great if you add SVG support.
It was on list at some point. For sure SVG import already works in IDE.
look carefully at the start of video, it was mentioned on screen!
@@gnysek it was actually mentioned in the start of video on screen. which mean it's planned to be added very soon.
@@allaze-eroler I hope so 😊
it doesn't mean it will be very soon, first mention of that feature was around November 2021, and around end of 2022 we were even sending example SVGs to them... - but in other hand, they for sure working on it from some time, maybe just not giving priority.
happy to made the switch to game maker engine and perfect timing to with this new update and new features for game maker. it'll make the journey easy, accessible and fun. THANK YOU GAMEMAKER!!!!
Please add vst support and add audio Effects
最後の「GameMaker!」って叫ぶところが好きです。
3Dを扱いやすくしてほしいぐらいですね。
I'm currently creating my first game using your engine so I don't have much to compare to, but these changes look awesome. Great to hear some fellow Scots in the industry as well! Great job 💚
I'm so glad I chose to start with gamemaker, keep up the great work! Excited for the updates!!
This update is literally huge, I'm completely green when it comes to gamedev minus a singular Lua course. Since starting to use Gamemaker the only thing I would want to change is the Sprite Editor to where I can't copy a part of my sprite and paste it in another slide so if I want to do certain things I've got to go into Aesprite. That's my only gripe, other then that I'm amazed at how much I'm able to learn within the GM Community and plan to make some awesome games in the future with it!
I can definately appreciate the JS integration. But I do miss the Rollback Multiplayer idea, and I hope it makes a return after all this is up and running. =)
Javascript is huge!!! (And TS!)
Been using gamemaker since Mark Overmars was still in control, it's come a very long way over the years! I've been using godot as of late, I might pick this back up for some 2d work - glad you dropped the subscription model, that's what drove me away in the first place.
Now I am considering Game Maker for web even more 😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊😊
I love game maker almost as much as i love spending 10 years figuring out how to do stuff they keep just making a LOT easier now.
I've been using GM since 2016 and his is the most I've been excited for updates to GM! OMG all of this is going to be such huge game changers, so glad I've stayed with GM. Keep it up guys!!!
It's amazing that I don't have to use Sequence to design UI anymore.
It would be better if you add support for external editors as well (like VS Code). Specially for C# and JavaScript
For the new script editor can you pop the window out to have it either side by side or on another monitor?
Great work! Looking forward to those GUI Layers.
Goodbye Gamemaker, Hello Unity and Unreal very very the best !!!
All good stuff, thank you.
I'm cobbling together a library I plan on using in multiple projects, so the prefab feature will be very handy.
Thank you so much. Long time user and I'm so proud of how accessible you've made game design these past 3 years.
Held off on my project for a year because of other stuff, but when the UI stuff comes out I'm gling to remake it!
right after I wish there would be a better looking code editor for gm2, this pops up
thanks a lot for this upcoming update, Gamemaker Studio
UI and 3D.
Holy shit, MASSIVE congratulations on the increase in userbase!! I've been using GameMaker commercially since 2019, and it is by far my preferred engine. I was worried when it got acquired, but it seems like it all worked out. You guys still FEEL indie. Stay awesome! I'm most excited about prefabs though!
Basic lighting system with colour please.
We love gamemaker
Is there any time frame for updates?
The roadmap lists all the planned changes coming to GameMaker in the months ahead: github.com/orgs/YoYoGames/projects/13/views/1?pane=info
Just started using game maker loving it!
Great update. Would be great if you guys added a feature that finished my game for me.
That'll probably be 2025
Godddd the UI plugin is going to be a TIME SAVERRR
I'm so glad I stuck with GM right now 🥰😍 the prefabs are a game changer. I've already been making reusable components scripts but this is so much more convenient.
THEY COOKED SO HARD
Wonderful update! Excited to try out the new code editor!
THANK YOU SO MUCHHH FOR THE UI UPTADES SUCH A LIFE SAVERR
I love Rollback multiplayer
We're still working on it! It's tricky but the hope is to bring it to other platforms with the new runtime 💪
@@GameMakerEngine Thanks
la UI es lo más importante en novedades, poder poner botónes, checkbox y demás sería genial, a veces desearía que GM fuese tan fácil de usar como Godot, pero conservando la gran optimización y potencia de GM.
This is all gonna be so great in my next project when I’m officially able to upgrade to the newer version.
Still some great changes though. I remember having two instances of game maker open so I can copy and paste code.
Wow, this sounds really wonderful - I can't wait to try it out! Thanks for your great efforts to improve it!
Thanks You for engine❤❤❤
Great way to start the day!
GAMEMAKER !!!
Great improvements. Love your dedication to the dev community. Please continue!
I didn't actually intend to stick with GameMaker, but this changed my mind :)
I wasn't ready for that Russell jumpscare
thank you thank you so much!!! the prefabs and the new code editor alone are a blessing thank you! im literally almost crying

brutal
We were worried we'd breach some gore violations and be banned from TH-cam, but seems to have flew under the radar for now
it would be cool if you add composite objects and some kind of built-in tagging system for instances (not objects)
I second this, or at least multiple sprites assigned to the same instance that can each have their own 9-slice stretch settings (seen and editable in the room editor). I know GameMaker is not trying to be a 3D engine, but for those of who are very loyal to GameMaker, being able to build 2.5D games via the room editor in such a way where we can build structures easily with visually stretchable width and depth dimensions would usher in a whole 2.5D revolution of GameMaker creations.
❤️ I love the new Code editor.
I am popping off about the new prefab stuff. I wish there was a visual/node system for shader development. Its the one thing that wins me over to unity or godot.
Is there an external tool that can work well for this?
finally the ui system 👍
It was about time!
Very much looking forward to prefabs!
Very impressive! Makes me want to jump back in
Pretty cool! But ill keep using LTS for a while
I wonder how this C# will work under the hood. Will short be short and integer be integer and not actually decimals? Will it be possible to compile it through YYC analogs to make C# written code run faster? How much faster will it run compared to GML at all? Will it be possible to combine multiple languages in one project?
So hyped about the new updates, thank you for this GameMaker you changed my life!
Thank you! You guys rock!
So good. Love the UI stuff. I hope some easy to implement resolution support (or prefab) is also being considered, since it seems to be one of the more complex and finicky things to implement in a robust way in gamemaker.
That's what the UI Layers and flex panels are going to be for, they will be responsive to the view or room size that they are in 😊
"It's not like we're trying to do something dumb like, idk, cost per install?" caught me off guard af, I laughed so hard
Nice improvements! ...especially comparing to version what I started to use 'few' years ago and bought a license from Mark Overmars... :)
Please add new bugs
OK
@@GameMakerEngine :)
@@GameMakerEngine NOOOOO
@@GameMakerEngine Please add bugg fixes xd.
the Ui layers are great. i wonder if we ever will see 3d integration or better 3d tools. at a certain point I might be forced to switch the engine since 3d is just performing better with the consumer
I am eagerly awaiting the teased fighting game template.
impressive. very nice.
Nice new UI system, but we also need a better view/camera system, I would like to create a camera/view and forget about coding all the painful math to make it fully responsive to any screen resolution.
Construct 3 has done it the best. The inner and outer resizing options that can easily be set was a draw for me. You could also resize the wondow realtime and the resizing the camera parameters would be applied unlike Gamemaker which fails at that. Unfortunately Construct 3 falls short when looping through and dealing with multiple instance logic.
Good stuff guys!
I love the Isaac Four Souls box in the background
It's one of the coolest boxes I own so I had to get it in there 😜
Light engine would be amazing
I love all the new upcoming features ❤❤❤
9:29 reminds me of the SEGA 90s tv commercials 😂
Maybe a way back type thing to see saves of a game instead of replacing the files entirely
Finally, all the changes that the engine needed will be made
why dont u update click on top object instead check mouse click event ?
Yeahh🎉 Game Maker is starting to sound awesome again
so excited for the new code editor
I love that, the arcade machine shows Games made in GameMaker Studio!
Fun to play too!
Any release date, migrating from Unity to Godot(2D) for the moment...looking forward to consider this engine too
This is actually incredible
amazing update, where sources would you personally point out new learners to start out in 2024? I would like to see a new a tutorial series showcasing how to make a simple game while making use of all these unique features!
