M David Litwa's book "Found Christianities" documents the apparently widespread early Christian belief that the creator god was less than and separate from the Father of Jesus. Marcion appears to be holding to an established doctrine in his day.

Thanks for suggesting that book , I found it online and I skimmed until around page 50 when he has begun to directly talk about the gospel of John and is holding my interest, so I will continue to see what he has to say.
