This might sound so dumb but I look at it as some sort of cool thing. It actually just depends on the disorder you are diagnosed with. So I have auditory hallucinations or hallucinations in general but mostly auditory and yes it sucks to hear or see things that nobody else sees so it tricks you and makes you look like an idiot but it can also help your creativity! Perhaps I am writing a story and I can hear the sounds that I'm imagining with this story! Just in case, each individual's hallucinations or disorder reacts differently so this is only my explanation of my disorder and stuff. By the way, some people ask me or others on "How do you know if hallucinations are hallucinations?" and I just basically take a look if the people around me are reacting to this sound I'm hearing specifically. For example, a fire alarm going off but the environment is acting normal.
That doesn't sound dumb at all, it actually sounds very familiar. I have a mixed form of schizophrenia as well as psychotic depression and I get hallucinations from both disorders (usually auditory but I have picture hallucinations as well). I agree very much that these hallucinations are not always a negative thing. I should specify that the schizophrenia hallucinations and psychotic hallucinations are different; usually for most people the schizophrenia hallucinations are not as violent, threatening, or "mean" so to say as psychotic depression hallucinations. I actually enjoy my schizo hallucinations because it is always like I have my own audience, I am never alone and have actually gained a comforting feeling at times from having my voices around. The "sounds" I hear are not scary or life threatening either, they are usually just things similar to what you described such as fire alarms, my name being called, things falling over, door bell ringing, phone ringtone for text, or what sounds like an ipod has been turned up all the way with headphones plugged in but not in your ear. The voices simply talk and sometimes even ask me how my day was and laugh at my jokes. The picture hallucinations are similar to things such as animals running around buildings and insects being in odd locations ( I am a vet student with an entomology minor and rescue and foster through my local shelter and so animals and bugs aren't scary to me, but I can see how others would find that scary). Hallucinations are not always a terrible thing, but certain disorders can produce different kinds of hallucinations, and like you said, everyone experiences their own thing. My psychotic depression leads to hallucinations that can be mean or insulting, for example my boyfriend will tell me he loves me, but the voices will immediately tell me that he doesn't love me and he is just using me. It's manageable but a lot worse than my schizo hallucinations. And to address the question you get asked, "How do you know if hallucinations are hallucinations?", I can say honestly that I don't know until someone else doesn't react (like you said). This can be dangerous and annoying because I have been in situations where I thought someone was inside my house and I called the police only to find no one there, and other situations where I hear something downstairs and have to get up multiple times a night to make sure it's nothing. Oh the adventures of living with an altered reality (:

The voices simply talk and sometimes even ask me how my day was and laugh at my jokes. The picture hallucinations are similar to things such as animals running around buildings and insects being in odd locations ( I am a vet student with an entomology minor and rescue and foster through my local shelter and so animals and bugs aren't scary to me, but I can see how others would find that scary). Hallucinations are not always a terrible thing, but certain disorders can produce different kinds of hallucinations, and like you said, everyone experiences their own thing. My psychotic depression leads to hallucinations that can be mean or insulting, for example my boyfriend will tell me he loves me, but the voices will immediately tell me that he doesn't love me and he is just using me. It's manageable but a lot worse than my schizo hallucinations. And to address the question you get asked, "How do you know if hallucinations are hallucinations?", I can say honestly that I don't know until someone else doesn't react (like you said). This can be dangerous and annoying because I have been in situations where I thought someone was inside my house and I called the police only to find no one there, and other situations where I hear something downstairs and have to get up multiple times a night to make sure it's nothing. Oh the adventures of living with an altered reality (:
