I sadly do not recommend this pump. My baby is 7 weeks old and the motor of the pump has died. I mainly pump due to my baby being born rather small (she gets really worn out just from nursing) so we had to supplement. I bought this before my baby was born, cause I loved my Medela breast pump I used in 2015 with my older kids. While using this pump it's been a love hate relationship. Makes me sad cause I usually enjoy Medela products.

Any insight on how to use flange inserts with the hands free collection cups?

There are many flange insert options on the market for hands-free collection cups! They often fit into a 24mm flange opening and work to narrow the tunnel. Some have a solid edge, and others have a scalloped style edge.
Top tips: make sure you measure and/or meet with a lactation professional before ordering, if possible. This helps make sure you are ordering a more accurate size and not guessing. Also, make sure your insert is fully inserted in the flange tunnel, with no gapping. This can take a little fine-tuning. Be sure to remove the insert when cleaning your parts instead of keeping them assembled. This prevents any milk from getting stuck between the flange and the insert and ensures both parts are washed and dried thoroughly. Lastly, if any painful rubbing or discomfort occurs from using the insert, either due to incorrect sizing or friction on an insert edge, stop using it immediately.

Note on insert use: Medela's instructions for use recommend to "only use Medela recommended parts with your breast pump." We understand that Medela does not make a hands-free cup smaller than 21mm. Using a non-Medela part may interfere with pump performance, and Medela does not guarantee the other part will work well and not impact overall performance. With all of that in mind, if you want to use this pump and need a smaller size insert, using a non-Medela part may be your only option. If you have additional questions pertaining to flange inserts for the Medela collection cups, we recommend reaching out to Medela directly.
