Just check a kids beauty pageant from the US - I'd argue those kids go through comparable levels of abuse (even if it's different in nature). Life mostly sucks, most people are assholes :D these kids are at least well fed by NK standards.

If you are picked to sing the anthem and you fail, then you can lose your rank, of which there are 40. There are 40 social ranks and then sub ranks that differ depending on your loyalty to the party. In South Korea it's just competitive and materialistic but you don't get ruined for failing.

I honestly don't think its very probable that they/their families will be killed or detained for messing up once, they may be threatened or put off. But the kids definetly went through a lot of useless and harsh training and possibly suffered abuse.
Those poor children, they all look so scared of putting a foot wrong, especially the little girl in the pink dress. If he (Kim Jong Un) changed his vile ways and actually helped his people, he would find all adulation to be genuine.
