Dude you nailed it. I'm working on a friends bike that he received as a basket case. He's poured a ton of money in it and he brought the carb to me to completely disassemble, check and clean. I took every last part out of that carb and cleaned and checked each passage and all was well. So I'm going back together and the last thing I am doing is checking choke level. Now I'm not a Suzuki mechanic but just an old school carburetor mechanic and I'm checking the float level and I have EXACTLY what you're showing here which gave a low fuel level in the carb and thus leaned this bike out to the point it wouldn't run well. I'm following your instructions and I'm sure this will make a huge difference. Thanks for the great video. On why someone would set it that way in the first place you asked? A agree with your thoughts that they roll the carb level and they compress that little spring loaded pin and thus you end up with what we have found. Thanks again!!

Bowl leaked out overflow when gas was turned on and bike was sitting off. Owner or tech thought float level was too high. And actually needle and seat were compromised and not shutting off.
I've had carbs before where if you just tap on the side with a solid object (screw driver handle or plyers) then the float needle will seat and stop the fuel leaking out.. Or if its a dirt bike just by simply riding it off road is enough to jiggle the needle and keep it from sticking open. Of course if you can get a re-build kit then do it, but the tap the side method will keep a leaking carb from leaking temporarily. lol
Wow, I've been messing with my carb due to the fact that fuel keeps leaking out the drain tube on the bowl and around the gasket. I cleaned and cleaned on it, then reset the float level, but still have a leak. your coment about the needle and seat makes a lot of since. Main reason is that when is that when I start this bike, it doesnt want to start when using the choke. Also I need to open the throttle a little, then, Bam, it fires off. so I think I need to ajust the needle down a bit, that would make the needle seat better and raise the slide up a little providing more air??? Please let me know your thoughts. ty
I love your content. I have a friends bike and took me weeks and weeks of trouble shooting and taking carbs on and off just scratching head wondering why it keeps dying upon throttle when the carbs and jets are spotless and in good health. Well I've never had to do float adjustment before but somthin told me to check the floats cause everything checked out good and noticed they are just a tad bit uneven with each other. That makes me think they're not at the right hight. I'm fixin to give it a go and your vids are extremely helpful and explained very clear. Thanks for the motorcycle education. You're awesome.

It's good to see someone going into detail on the valve spring and plunger. The mystery is figuring out how strong that spring should be. I just watched a video of a guy holding his carb completely upside down and his spring was fairly strong. That spring was strong enough to hold the float up and when he tapped on the float it would pop back up. I know the springs get weak over time (because mine did) and it's too bad we can't pull that spring out to stretch it out some.

Great video! I just rebuilt my 06 CRF450R carb (my first time) and I'm pretty sure the same thing happened to mine that happened to the carb in this video. My theory is this... When removing the float and float needle, the needle was stuck in the hole and the tab got bent from pulling on the float trying to get it and the needle out. I didn't realize it until I had the bike reassembled. 😡

Hi Jason Warden, Did you have any start problems with the bad setting? I have on my WR 426 backfire while trying to start it and once it is started, the idle is not steady even with choker off. It revs by itself and once I drive it around for 30 seconds and then it stalls. Not enough fuel going to the carb? I forgot to mention I can only start it if I twist the gas three times before kicking it. Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks! Thanks to Shane Conley for the video! Amazing!

@@lynnh7694 i am mechanically inclined and work on shit all the time and i have NEVER understood "float adjustment" I have messed with my carburetor and watched video after video.. can someone just explain if you put the carb on its side and measure or what.. I am just not following these videos.. I understand how they work but dont know how they need to be set, and arent certain models different.. In simple english please.. Seems way too technical, i dont care how the last guy set it i just need to understand the process.. I understand the concept.. I KNOW how it works.. It CAN let in too much fuel.. But WHERE and HOW does it need to be set and is this the same for ANY bike??.. I have watched video after video on dirt bike and small engine carbs and i still do not know if the carb needs to be upside down, on its side at 45 degrees, or just regular.. Not following.. I love engines but i f'n hate carburetors with a passion..i can re jet them and change the floats but as far as setting the floats and changing the needle valve seat o ring.. Atleast on my cr i do not understand AT ALL how to do it, my needle seat valve o ring wont even come out and has no bolt.. I understand how they work and that they can leak but no good explanation on youtube yet.. Not even his.. Atleast for my application..a 3 minute video just can't explain this kind of stuff, there's so many variables, different designs, and basics they dont cover.. I still don't understand how he set this float..
@@Alex-pj8eufrom what i have gathered, you want the float to be parallel with the body of the carb. making small adjustments and tilting the carb to see how it reacts, where it engages. i think the 45 degree angle will benefit the most because there is no fluid in the bowl so you will meed to use the air/atmosphere as a substitute. “has has properties of a liquid” meaning it has no shape of its own. if at first you fail, try, try, try, and try again.

I randomly clicked here. I was thinking that main jet on mine is too small. It doesn't idle well, when I stop at the light, it runs higher but after few seconds it almost dies and again gets higher. I had many things adjusted, now I'll check the float. Hope this is it.

Excellent video, thanks. I got a question about the spring clip that binds the float with the float valve. Is it suppose to hold the float tab tight on the valve pin (without compressing it of course) or dingle freely with a gap? I had the concept that he valve regulates the fuel flow so when the float compress the valve pin it stops the flow OR the float lifts the whole valve UP and by so allowing the fuel to flow through the tapered front of the valve (which in this case, the spring pin on the valve is just to dampen the vibration?

It was leaking petrol out the over flow when the gas was left on. So they thought that was the problem and over adjusted it to stop that. When it was proberbly the valve seat or needle that needed changed or both. ??????

This is the fourth video I've watched to learn how to set the float adjustment on my 2004 Yamaha YZ-250F and NONE of them ever shows how to adjust and only just how high it should be. I just rebuilt the entire carburetor because it was leaking fuel. It had a ton of black large particles in it. Now it's extremely clean with all the critical parts and it still leaks. I'm assuming the floats needs adjustment, but the service manual gives no indication of how to do this. Neither do any of the videos like this one that claim to show this.

To answer your question I think the carburator body should be set to the same angle as if it was on the bike. than adjust the float parallel to the carb body. What does the maintenance manual state you should do?

Can you do a video on "Deceleration Air Valve" and why it causes bike to backfire when you let off on the throttle please? I know this may sound stupid but did you ever work on a carb that had no air/fuel mixture screw on it, reason why I ask is I could not find one on my carb which my mechanic said is from a XR650R. He built my bike but anything to do with it I don't discuss because of a blow-out we had in the meantime I was stuck with this unknown carb issue that I had take on myself with no tuning skills only from what I see on youtube. My bike runs ok but still has that popping on deceleration and burps or more like has a vacuum effect in the exhaust everytime I shut the bike down. Your input on this would be greatly appreciated, and the only thing I did before this happened was take off my headers to do a wrap, replace the gasket and put it back together.

I think it might be the wrong needle... the needle is most likely taller than the previous needle. The other thing that happens is the gasket weather fiber or aluminum is thicker that the original, this will impact float height. A small difference in float height makes a huge difference in Float Bowl fuel level. I would go as far as to say a 1mm change in Float height makes a 10mm difference in fuel level in the bowl.
You rock for commenting! I saw Shane answer this one in the comments as he was the tech to repair it. It was the correct needle but adjusted far off nominal. We will let Shane know! Thanks Shane. I think Kyle might be right. Anyone know where to find float height specs for Mikuni carbs? Mine is a VM 20. There’s nothing in the service manual on that. You Rock🤘🏻
The only correct place you will find it is in the EXACT year make and model OEM service manual (some forum may have it screenshot). You cannot look for float height by carb model as different manufactures may orientate to carb different causing the need for a different float height spec. Same manufacture but different country of origin will change this too and from year to year. A great site to purchase OEM manuals cheap is www.tradebit.com/G/manuals This will give you everything possible for the model. Also text a photo or the "manual" you have. MEMBER only...lol

Thanks for the video great stuff. I have a 1987 YZ 490 and was wondering how you found out what the float height should be. You said it was 8mm, is there a place to go to find out the technical information on the float. My bike is running very rich and I have a sneaky suspicion it is the tab you just discussed with the float. I can adjust the fuel to about 3/4 closed and it gets better, but the mixture of the fuel is very rich. I would love to have anyone comment as I am stuck right now. Thanks
adjust what fuel to 3/4 closed? the mikuni and dellorto tuning manuals are both good and fairly easy to find a pdf for free and do a good job of explaining tuning ranges . also just so you know yamahas stock jetting for alot of the yz490s was on the rich side because when it was jetted nicely, it would ping because the engine had a bit too much compression so the rich jetting was a "band aid" from yamaha. if it was mine, i'd mix in half race gas in with my gas can and jet it just a little bit leaner than yamahas jetting.
My carb is jetted to spec but it's really rich even though the mixture screw is leaned out as far as it can go, the choke kills the engine every time and the plug is fouled. Is the float height the most likely suspect here?
Hi Sir, I don't know if I understand.. but in mine manual it's right to upside down the carb, and I think that mean that I have to rotate the carb.. but you lay down the carb on a table.. so what I have to do? Thanx

Man idk why but I can’t get this carb I’m currently working on to quit leaking out of the overflow. I swapped out the needle valve entirely, and I keep setting it to 8mm laying sideways with calipers, and I even went a little over and under in hopes it would make a difference. Idk what is going on😭😭

I watched this after I did it and put it back on LOL i was trying to angle the carb so it was just making contact with the float needle but the float valve kept popping up with the float and made it way way to rich now flames shoot out my exhaust lol

if the float is set to high.. to much gaz in the carb. can that be my back firing and non start issue?.only start to have that problem after i change my needle and decide to adjust my float ?
So you still didn't mention how to law the carb on the bench, the most important part. Laying it the way you did has a few variables such as the idle cable affecting the angle.

Do you think by applying pressure and the moment pressure builds is the correct spot to measure? This smaller carb im dealing w has all kinds of movement between movement of needle and float (plastic float).
Measure just as I show. "Touching but not compressed" Thanks for subbing! High 5 us with a donation: www.paypal.me/how2wrench Join this channel to get access to perks: th-cam.com/channels/BhM8DCKnT3qXwTW0eToyCg.htmljoin
Yeah im as lost as ever. You’ve got the carb on its side and just slapping the float and half the time it rests parallel to the carb body and the other half it hangs open and you tap it closed. How is that a repeatable method to measure where it rests or lands????

ahaha i feel you brotha, honestly i think you need to be measuring it while the carb is at about a 45° and the float tab barley needs to be resting on the needle, but not compressing. then adjust accordingly
My mikuni on my dirt bike is killing me. I rebuilt the carb, cleaned again and again but it only will get fuel in it when I turn the carb sideways. It then starts but idles erratically. Do you think it’s related to float needle adjustment? Does the needle need to be hanging with a tiny piece metal or is it okay for it to sit as it’s in the need housing? Thank you!
hi can you tell me why I find fuel being spat out of the carburettor inlet, I can see it coming from around the needle, could this be related to float valve adjustment?

Wasn't laying it on the bench so that all of the wait was off of the valve instead he probably had it standing up as you showed earlier in the video which would result in the float weight being on the needle valve and from a standing straight up and down it would look like it sets just perfect but as you showed when you lay it down on its side it's incorrect very very easy mistake not very many people would think about it

,I just read something about measuring from the tip or bottom I suppose of the main jet with a special tool for mine. It's a kiehn on a crf 100. Like everyone has that tool. I have a set of digital calipers. Also that thread shows 12.5 and other threads that do not mention the tool say 21. 5 or 21 . Man all sounds crazy. I thought I was lean but I left fuel and removed the bowl and it was up on the gasket so it would be rich being that fui correct?

bought a brand new KTM 300 xc. after the first ride I noticed I was leaking gas out of the over flow. when I tipped the bike towards me I noticed It was leaking gas out of the over flow. is this a common problem with the new mikuni carbs. which direction should I bend the tab or would you recommend taking it in since I do not have the correct measuring tools. I believe it's not off much.
Michael Illig bend the tab in towards the float pin/body to get the needle to seat earlier. you don't need special tools to check. they're nice and name the job faster/easier and more exact but you can get a good measurement by attaching a clear hose to the bottom of the carb and bend it up along the side of said carb. the level you're shooting for is right at the San where the float meets the body. Search TH-cam for "carb float height check" and you have your solution there

I'm going to have to look at my float inlet needle/ seat again on my cr 125, Im very mechanically inclined but i hate carburetors, my hands are big and parts are so tiny.. My bike fouls plugs, put a new plug in it and its fine, ride it, runs great let it idle and stop, it doesnt load up any more than other bikes ive had, or even turn it off start it again, starts on first kick.. You could ride it all day without it fouling.... BUT park it go out to ride the next day, always starts right up perfect...let the bike idle for 20 seconds and the plug starts fouling the very next day after putting in a fresh plug the day prior, any idea what this could be??? I've had tons of bikes, replaced a ton of stuff on this bike and I got no idea, electrical is ALL new and checked out so ruled out, jetting should be ok I even put in a jd jet kit didn't help although bike runs better and cleans out splooge when you open it up better, float height should be ok but i will double check, could it be the needle seat, or the needle seat o ring?? Im talking a bike with a new top end, new crank seals(on the wet side), all new electrical (stator, coil etc.), stock pipe, stock reeds, proper jetting, the only thing it can be is the carb or sucking in crankcase oil which i wouldnt understand with new crank seals.. Does this sound like a carb issue?? So confused..

My 08 Z250f state the setting exactly the way you do. Carb not full upside down. The issue Im having I thing my float level is too high, the bike does not leak when sitting, but leaks while riding it with the slightest little bumps on the trail. It runs good though. If I lower the level I think it will fix this just hope I'm not going to make it go too lean. Other part is it starts well and does not seem to flood. So i hope I'm on the right train of thought lowering the level. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

how much time you going to spend trying to clean it when you should just run down to the bike shop and buy a rebuild kit when you're cleaning out the carburetor and setting the float anyway you do not reuse old carburetor parts to set your floats
I will personally refuse to clean out somebody's carburetor if they refuse to buy a kit to rebuild it because you do not always get all of the junk out of the Jets and the kit comes with all new Jets this is also a good idea to make sure all of your ports in the carburetor are free of debris because a plug Venturi will cause you a lot of headaches sometimes you can use a torch tip cleaner set what works best to is a broken clutch cable strand of wire or a red twisty tie strip all the plastic off and use the bare wire as a needle to prod through the 5 orifice openings in front of your carburetor slide they are located on the top and bottom are the carburetor in front of your slide they end up going through your jets Main and idle and your choke
I’m lost. Manual for the 2004 yz450f says to hold the carb upside down. See this post. thumpertalk.com/forums/topic/553485-08-yfz-450-float-level/?do=findComment&comment=5296233 Just want to make sure I’m understanding this correctly. I don’t want to install my carb on my bike until I’m 100% as it’s a bitch to install.

I think you have a bit of parallax error in your measurement at 3:28. The only real accurate way to measure that height is to have some sort of device that can sit on the seal surface with an arm that hovers over to the float at a 8.0 mm height.
Hi Brett. I'm an intern here at How 2 Wrench and am going to tackle this one as Shane taught me. Shane is in Japan training techs for a few weeks. This caliper (most all) has a clearance cut on the end and is clearing the bowl lip. It's measuring from the bowl surface as you can see at 0:29 So like we say in many of our videos its up to you to use the year/make/model service manual and our videos are guides to point you in the right direction. I bet you enjoy his video on calculating bowl gaskets thickness when doing old resto work where the gasket may be hard to get. You rock for commenting! We will let Shane know! No, they don't...Check again my friend. The photos are deceiving and details are in the print "the float needle should...." Shane Conley your video asked why it would be set the way it may have been. My reply was simply a theory as to why. For example 4-11 of a 2003 yz250 2 stroke manual says with it upside down. If one didn't understand the notes below that comment, one could easily set it the way the one in the video was. I just went thru the same issues as your video did on a friends bike. I had to ref the manual as I wasn't sure of the target height. Wasn't saying your method was wrong.
Thanks for commenting and adding value to our community! Nope 1200 ft and float height is not adjusted for altitude but the fuel metering is. A technician will aim more toward one end of the spec but never like the extreme this was. Check out the other comments and replies I did on this video! Have you subscribed yet to never miss a video? If the plunger depresses just from being right side up and under its own weight, then the plunger spring has gotten weak. You shouldnt have to hold it sideways to set the height.

Please let me know your thoughts. ty
@@stevesworld7831 I am talking about the float needle and the float seat not the slide needle. You may those two confused.
@@200xcBruce oh, thanks for your reply.
My guess is worn needle valve was causing over fill and previous owner adjusted tang to compensate

Thank you! We will let Shane know!

Hi Jason Warden,
Did you have any start problems with the bad setting? I have on my WR 426 backfire while trying to start it and once it is started, the idle is not steady even with choker off. It revs by itself and once I drive it around for 30 seconds and then it stalls. Not enough fuel going to the carb? I forgot to mention I can only start it if I twist the gas three times before kicking it. Any help will be much appreciated! Thanks!
Thanks to Shane Conley for the video! Amazing!

Good comment, I'm just about ready to sell mine. I have been messing around with this float adjustment time and time again.
Thank you so much for this video bro. I learn a lot for this, always take care, im from manila philippines.

I randomly clicked here. I was thinking that main jet on mine is too small. It doesn't idle well, when I stop at the light, it runs higher but after few seconds it almost dies and again gets higher. I had many things adjusted, now I'll check the float. Hope this is it.
marchlander1 Main jet is for fill in throttle. The pilot jet is what controls the idle. Also could be the air mix screw
Many service manuals including mine (Suzuki GZ250) specify to check floats with carb upside down. They mention "just touching the needle" though.

Richer setting
Excellent video, thanks. I got a question about the spring clip that binds the float with the float valve. Is it suppose to hold the float tab tight on the valve pin (without compressing it of course) or dingle freely with a gap? I had the concept that he valve regulates the fuel flow so when the float compress the valve pin it stops the flow OR the float lifts the whole valve UP and by so allowing the fuel to flow through the tapered front of the valve (which in this case, the spring pin on the valve is just to dampen the vibration?

Mechanic not knowing the proper way to set the float height. I found out that a lot of people will take them hold them upside down until the float is level and call it good.

It was leaking petrol out the over flow when the gas was left on. So they thought that was the problem and over adjusted it to stop that. When it was proberbly the valve seat or needle that needed changed or both. ??????

this is exactly why im here lol
i actually just set the float to being paralel to the base of carb with bowl off obviously an it worked better than measuring
Some carbs don't use a "level with body" design though, so that would work for all models....BUT is very common...the day it isn't will kick your butt trying to figure out what's wrong...Thank you for commenting.

I know this is old, but if you tried to adjust it as if on the bike it would be upside-down and never even touch the needle.
Clogged , or it wasn't closing the valve at all and gas was pouring out of the over flows
How high has it to be able to be opened ? I mean how high the pin has to go out to let the fuel quickly replace the fuel in the carb tank ?
So the crank seal (right side) springs facing towards you. I have a cr85

You said to set the float hight with the carb at an angle so the pin in just barely getting touched. Then when you break out the calipers you claim its set right with the carb sitting on its side This is going to be two wildly different heights. Which is it?

It looked to me that the wire that is connected to the float needle was on a 45. shouldn't it run perpendicular to the metal tang on the float?
This video is old but I imagine they probably had fuel leaking out of the overflow and they were trying to prevent it from happening

He asked me to mention that you are making a great point for others as to a common problem when aftermarket needles are used and not checked or just "assumed" from comparing to a needle already installed that was wrong. Thanks again for being part of our community.

Perhaps whoever was last in the carbs was having issues with engine flooding/bogging.

Thanx
Nicely done, thank you.
Thank you...

So I don't understundom was it running lean or rich in the begining?
Man idk why but I can’t get this carb I’m currently working on to quit leaking out of the overflow. I swapped out the needle valve entirely, and I keep setting it to 8mm laying sideways with calipers, and I even went a little over and under in hopes it would make a difference. Idk what is going on😭😭
sorry meant to say too low. it is parallel to the body.

I watched this after I did it and put it back on LOL i was trying to angle the carb so it was just making contact with the float needle but the float valve kept popping up with the float and made it way way to rich now flames shoot out my exhaust lol
Will defiantly try setting it with the carb laying on its side seems a lot more easier and can get it more accurate

if the float is set to high.. to much gaz in the carb. can that be my back firing and non start issue?.only start to have that problem after i change my needle and decide to adjust my float ?
So you still didn't mention how to law the carb on the bench, the most important part. Laying it the way you did has a few variables such as the idle cable affecting the angle.
I adjusted the float like you showed in the video and fuel is still leaking from the drain hose….any suggestions?

Do you think by applying pressure and the moment pressure builds is the correct spot to measure? This smaller carb im dealing w has all kinds of movement between movement of needle and float (plastic float).

I'm wondering after rebuilding carb on polaris mikuni it idles wonderful when reaching top rev it cuts out. Do you think the float is too high.?

Wasn't laying it on the bench so that all of the wait was off of the valve instead he probably had it standing up as you showed earlier in the video which would result in the float weight being on the needle valve and from a standing straight up and down it would look like it sets just perfect but as you showed when you lay it down on its side it's incorrect very very easy mistake not very many people would think about it

You didn't set the float while holding it at a 22° angle?
That was my guess
Why would my Idling be sky high after adjusting it to the spec?
You can be running now rich or lean, play with the chole and idle screw to determine which one.
@@liveandletlive2894 when I pull my chock or hot start lever is out nothing happens does that mean I am running to rich?
@@IanHoltzhauzen sound like your running rich....a choke just richens the mixture so if that didnt affect it I'd assume your running rich but I can be 25 different things...did you try adjusting your idle screw?

,I just read something about measuring from the tip or bottom I suppose of the main jet with a special tool for mine. It's a kiehn on a crf 100. Like everyone has that tool. I have a set of digital calipers. Also that thread shows 12.5 and other threads that do not mention the tool say 21. 5 or 21 . Man all sounds crazy. I thought I was lean but I left fuel and removed the bowl and it was up on the gasket so it would be rich being that fui correct?

holding carb at wrong angle
what angle does it need to be?
bought a brand new KTM 300 xc. after the first ride I noticed I was leaking gas out of the over flow. when I tipped the bike towards me I noticed It was leaking gas out of the over flow. is this a common problem with the new mikuni carbs. which direction should I bend the tab or would you recommend taking it in since I do not have the correct measuring tools.
Search TH-cam for "carb float height check" and you have your solution there
Got to do this on my yz 125. Is the carb the same for a 250 ?

Set like I show with the 2008 spec and you’ll be in the right direction.

needle and seat on it was bad so they tended to stop overflow
I can't really see the top of your carb but it looks identical to mine does it have that electric solenoid thing and do you know anything about them I think might quit it always bogs down when I go it gas It's a main jet shut off or something I have heard I would like to know if I go to pop it out if your Springs or something in there that I'm going to release or is it just a swap a new one in you know anything about it.

He took a shortcut is what it seems
The person who adjusted the float height wasn't holding the carb at a 45 degree angle.
Because there was fuel coming out of the overflow
Float was probably set incorrectly because these are notorious for leaking when the fuel is on and the engines off or they lacked knowledge.

Polly gummed up inside the needle valve need to be replaced can't fix that no matter how hard you try it'll always gum up
how much time you going to spend trying to clean it when you should just run down to the bike shop and buy a rebuild kit when you're cleaning out the carburetor and setting the float anyway you do not reuse old carburetor parts to set your floats
Probably cause it was not set at the right angle is my guess.
You got it Shane. I think this one had some lack of knowledge too.

All of us real bikers know it is always better to run rich not lean burn the engine running too lean
or just dial it in...braaaaaaaap

Yamaha actually states to adjust it when upside down
No, they don't...Check again my friend. The photos are deceiving and details are in the print "the float needle should...." The OEM's write the service manual with the understanding the technicians are "trained" and leave many details out or the book would be 1000 pages. Shane Conley your video asked why it would be set the way it may have been.
I see....My bad...I forgot about the question. this is an old video...You are correct bud!
He looked the bike looped

Thanks for commenting and adding value to our community! Nope 1200 ft and float height is not adjusted for altitude but the fuel metering is. A technician will aim more toward one end of the spec but never like the extreme this was. Check out the other comments and replies I did on this video!

If the plunger depresses just from being right side up and under its own weight, then the plunger spring has gotten weak. You shouldnt have to hold it sideways to set the height.
