  • This is a pastel painting of a Western Bluebird. My painting is a 5" x 7" pastel. I am using CarbOthello pastel pencils in combination with soft pastel sticks. My paper is Strathmore Illustration/Bristol board 500 series cold press Vellum 10 ply. Prints are available.

    Oh my goodness Roby this is incredible. I love those colours in the background. I once tried to paint a branch and it got worse and worse the more I did but yours as always is absolutely spot on. As with all your paintings you really do get the impression that you can reach in and touch the wood and feel the textures and of the soft tiny hairs on the bird. The way the orange in the chest goes into the white is perfect and the details are as always Roby absolutely beautiful. What a masterpiece and what a master with pastels you are. Your work inspires me so much. Thank you for sharing this magnificent painting Roby. We’re all so lucky to have your videos to inspire and for all of us new artists to learn from. I will be in touch soon Roby, it’s been a bit mental this side of the water but I haven’t forgotten. I hope your well and I will send a letter very soon xxxxxx

      Hello Marianne! Thank you for your nice comment, that's so sweet of you. Yes, I blend with the a color that when mixed together with the color preceding it will be the desired effect that I'm going for. In this way it pushes the color into the next and smooths it out achieving the desired result. I do use my little finger to smudge when using the stick pastels to cover more ground quickly. Yes, this time it's the background and the branch. It's a fascinating process when the flat paper turns into a piece of wood which seems to prepare to jump out of the picture. And the sky - I didn't know that you people in California know how an autumn sky in Germany looks like 😉. Once more very inspiring and I am looking forwsrd to your next tutorial. All the best from your very sick 🤧🤧🤧 artist friend Matthias. (in Germany we call this "man's flu" which of course is much worse than the female version)

    • @robertarobybaer
      @robertarobybaer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello Matthias! Thank you so much! Sometimes I don't know what I'm doing but I just jump in and somehow I fill in the paper lol. Actually, I do know what I'm going for but sometimes happy mistakes happen and we all as artists love when that happens. I have a pretty good idea how I'm going to attack things but when it's something I've never done before I gulp and just jump in. Yeah, we have pretty Autumn skies here too lol. I'm so sorry that you're sick, I hope you're better now. I too was sick and didn't feel like sitting at the computer to answer the comments. Uh huh, I think that the man's flu is 1,000 times worse lol, we girls give birth so a little flu isn't going to bog us down much. All kidding aside, hope you feel better soon!! Thanks so much again. xoxoxox Roby

    Hi again Roby, I notice that your wonderful pictures are all created on a white surface board, which makes your art vibrant and wonderful to look at. But during my own art adventure using pastels and pastel pencils I found that all of the artists that I watched, usually frowned upon using a white surface and all used a coloured background paper, I personally like the white background paper, what are your thoughts regarding the use of coloured paper. ?. Thankyou in advance, Alan Casey.

    • @robertarobybaer
      @robertarobybaer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Alan, yes I do use the white surface (Bristol Board 500) always. It's a personal choice, the colored papers are fine too. They work very well for the layering process as you already have a "head start" with tones that work for your project. The color of surface chosen is probably done with the subject in mind, so it's a great tool for you and blends in nicely complimenting the subject. It's also an "automatic background" so to say built right in and pleasing to the eye! For me though, I like the white surface as I'm used to it and building my layers from a base of white seems more pure to me if that makes any since. I enjoy the challenge of the background, something to compliment the subject but not taking it over. Even if my background is just colors I love that I chose them and did the work. There is no right or wrong here, just what feels good to you as the artist. If you're only doing the subject and that's all it's called a drawing or rendering. If you fill all of the background leaving no paper showing through it's then called a painting. A lot of people trip on this fact but it's the real deal lol. Thank you for your kind compliments, so amazing! :)) Roby

    Love this drawing! Thank you! I use pastel pencils but this is a whole new way of using them, as you don't continually blend... is this right? Can't wait to try it and have subscribed. Do you have a patreon page?

    • @robertarobybaer
      @robertarobybaer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Jan May ~ Thank you! Actually I do continually blend. I choose a pencil color and apply it then the next choice of color is blended over the first choice and so on resulting in several blended layers to achieve the end result. After I like my foundation I then use the pencils to put in the fine details. On larger paintings I use stick pastels for my foundation covering lots of "ground" so I'm not wasting my pencils. I then start applying the pastel pencils for the fine detail. For a little pastel fact...this is called a painting not a drawing :). If you apply pastels over the entire paper it's called a painting but if you only do the subject and paper is showing it's then called a drawing or rendering. Look it up so I don't have to write it all out lol. Thanks for the sub, sweet!!! :)) Roby

      Hi ArtsyGirl ~ I have used this brand of sharpener for years, the X-Acto Powerhouse electric. I'll give you the link where I purchase them. You might be able to find them at a local Office Max but our store went down so I get them on-line now. After the initial sharpen you'll only need to leave your pencil in for about 1-2 seconds to get that great point. When the sharpener consistently starts breaking the tips off it's then time for a new one as the blades have become too dull to sharpen the pastels. It will still work fine for graphite though. I don't use any other pencils in my sharpener just pastels. They last a good long time and I consider it part of my supplies that have to be replenished. You'll also need an awl to dig out the point that sometimes gets stuck deep in the blades. First try to tip the sharpener up-side down and tap it hard. If that doesn't work then carefully grind it up with the awl pushing it through the back where it falls in the tray, try not gouge the blades. I have tried hand sharpening but that takes time and I love how in about 2 seconds you're right back on task with the X-Acto. Careful to not drop your pastel pencils as that is one of the main reasons you can't sharpen them. The pastel inside crumbles and makes it keep breaking off. Hope this helps! :)) Roby www.officedepot.com/a/products/595511/X-ACTO-Powerhouse-Electric-Pencil-Sharpener/

    Hearing this music reminds me of the Dr. Emoto water crystal experiment. And what he did was he filled two separate cups of water. Then he played bad music to one of the cups of water, and to the other cup of water, he played holy night to it. I'm not sure how many days he played the music to it I forget, but after he did it. He froze them separately. And then once he froze the waters, he took a piece from the one he played bad music and put it under the microscope and the water crystal was horrifying to look at.
    Then he took a piece of ice from the one he played silent night too and put it under the microscope and it was the most beautiful crystal of water he ever saw. And what he learned is by what you say or do or listen to, can affect not only you but even nature. So that's why he warned before he died, that we need to be careful and be proper in our actions. I believe that God somehow guided this man to do this before he died.
    So you guys can always search this stuff, up and it even works with rice. People have said its definitely true!
    On google images or on youtube you can see this stuff.
