The Conversation is a genius movie, which was actually one of the nominated Best-Picture films when Godfather 2 won, that people just don’t understand. Great movies tell their stories subtly without having to spell it out for the audience.
What about Tom Hayden? Robert Duvall. He was totally awesome! But my favorite in 1 was Brando and in part 2 was Deniro. It’s fascinating how The Godfather came to be in power. Especially when he assassinated the neighborhood gansta! That was cold! And bold!
Michael is the most interesting because he’s the most complex. But Kay is in many ways the heart and soul of the film because she’s the one that never allows Michael to simply jettison his conscience and inner-torment and become that one dimensional villain or, more apropos, that one dimensional anti-hero. Kay forces Michael to keep facing the human being that remains locked inside of this hard outer husk of a man.

No one ever understands that Michael was the villain in the movie. He was a power-hungry sociopath who chose to force his family into a costly war that saw Michael coming out as the new leader of the family. He only got his older brother killed, his newlywed bride killed, he lied to justify murdering his brother-in-law, and eventually killed his other brother.
@@marcusaurelius6873 Sonny wanted to take the deal with Sollozzo, which would have made the family a fortune, and made peace with the other families, but Michael convinced the brothers to start a war with EVERYONE including the police which cost the families a fortune. It was the war that Michael started that got Sonny killed.
