Good job making this. I just upgraded to a Rainman Watermaker and this was extremely helpful in installation. Very much enjoyed your breakdown. God bless the both of you!
We installed a Rainman on our Cal 39 last year and love the product. Great episode, informative and very well edited. Happy New Year and safe sailing ahead!
Wow, what a fantastic video! 👍👍👍 Installing a watermaker is a big step and it's great to see you both taking on this project aboard Sailing Avocet. You two rock! Keep up the excellent work and continue inspiring others with your sailing adventures. 🎉 Well done and enjoyable to watch!
Thank you so much for this video! This is just what I was looking for. First, I just want to clarify what I saw in your video regarding your installation. You teed the saltwater feed from an existing line and did not have to use a dedicated thruhull/seacock. You installed a 20-micron pre-filter in addition to the 5-micron pre-filter, which is what I would want to do for the exact same reasons you specified. Second, I want to ensure that my understanding of the Rainman unit is correct. One of the great appeals to me of the Rainman is that there isn’t a requirement for an initial “boost pump” because the unit is self-priming to 6 feet. I didn’t see you install one either. It seems that Rainman markets their watermakers as using just the 5-micron pre-filter. So, having said all that, I have a couple of questions regarding your installation, if I may. 1) Have you had any issues with the pressure pump pulling the seawater through both of the pre-filters (not due to clogging)? 2) Is there anything about the installation that you would change after having lived with it for a while? Thank you so much for any insights you might be able to share!
Great video, thank you. Regarding your AC vs DC comment, this does not perform the efficiently much, rather AC makes more sens on larger system and DC on smaller. For anyone in the process of choosing av water maker, I recommend doing the necessary research, just as you have done. Still I would like to clarify, that generally you have four parameters you can balance to your situation: Production rate (how fast do you need to produce water), energy efficiency (how many ah/wh does I take to produce a certain amount of water), powering method (AC, DC, dedicated engine, main engine) and finally price of the system, that will be influenced greatly by the other three parameters. As an example if you run a generator regularly, you could choose a high output AC powered water maker with low efficiency at a reasonable price. On the other end if you want to run it from a limited source of renewable energy, you might choose an efficient unit with energy recovery and run it from DC power. Your water maker is somewhere in between, as it is low output and does not have energy recovery, and as such would be suitable for a situation where you have a decent amount of solar and/or low water consumption. A system with energy recovery would make the same amount of water for 1/3 to 1/2 the power consumption (i.e. a Schenker 30lph would draw around 10A), but the unit might be double the price to purchase. Happy sailing⛵

@@sailingavocet we’re no longer in the Med. We did our 2022 spring and summer season in the South of Spain, the Balearics, Sardinia and Corsica. The marina prices in the Med are outrageous so anchoring is a must for normal mortals. Afterward we spent the fall and winter 22/23 in Motril and La Linea, Spain. Great locations and affordable marinas. But we prefer to stay on anchor rather than deal with marina berths. We are currently in Porto Santo in the Madeira archipelago. This is a wonderful place.
You guys are incredible! I love the way you handle your projects with such confidence, this particular project is also really useful especially to another friend of mine who is looking at going down this route. Thank you!
I’m in the middle of researching a fresh water maker system and the rainman happens to be on the short list. I’m grateful that you shared your experience on choosing a system and the thought process behind it. Happy New Year to you both!
Love this video thanks so much! We didn’t have fancy water makers when i started sailing oh geez 50+ years ago lol!! If I’d have only thought of it 🤣 a question, we’re you pretending you didn’t locate where you were going to install the system for the videos sake or had you already done that as it’s like the most important part of the process? 😂🤣 I’m going with you already located where you were putting it cuz you guys are way to smart to not have ! Fair winds and fins up to you both I love the med as I was born in Palermo and that’s where I learned to sail as a child!!
Fresh water!! Beautifully produced and informative video. We have an old Little Wonder aboard, and it is questionable if it can be revived. Might need to look into other options, and the ease / versatility of this instal is intrigiung
It is not a purifier, it’s a desalinator, and it is installed securely on the sole of our cabin - no fall risk or shaking risk. If our boat was shaking I feel like we would have more issues 😂
Not sure what you are referring to here, but we don’t have much space in our engine compartment to compensate the unit which is why we placed it where we did
Good question! Not at this time, however I (Marissa) am really sensitive to distilled water so have to supplement it with electrolytes to keep my tummy happy.
Adding minerals back to the water makes no sense. Plenty of minerals in your food and it all ends up in the same place. Your body doesn’t know if you ate or drank them. Minerals in water are for taste.
You are correct to an extent! However, I tend to forget to eat during the day so if I am chugging down water from our tanks I notice I get a little stomach sick if I don't compensate with electrolytes OR pair it with food. This is actually pretty common after running it by a few doctor friends who are also sailors. Very thankful to have a great community looking out for our health!@@jayelwin
Water purifiers should be installed in a place with a clean and stable water source. You can install the water purifier at the back of the boat, close to the water pump.
It isn’t a purifier, it’s a desalinator and it is installed at the back of our boat near the pump. Everything is within 3 feet of eachother which is the shortest run we could make - another reason why this unit is so great
A manual approach, if acceptable, is to buy a product with salts (such as Magnesium, Chloride, Potassium) and add the requisite number of drops to the volume of water to be consumed. That is far cheaper than buying an automatic salt feed system.
They aren't our sponsor - would have been cooler if they were but we paid for this baby out of pocket. After rebuilding our diesel engine and working on other diesel engines in general I can confidently say this sounds nothing like an engine. Sounds like a pump, sure, but engine? nah. Stay safe out there bud @basilroland
Great video! We just upgraded to a gas powered rainman, glad yours is working out!
Sweet! Excited to see you guys soon
It is an important step forward in ensuring the safety and comfort of the crew on long voyages. This is quite necessary.
agreed- cheers!

Well done! Enjoyable to watch! Looking forward to your return to Avocet!
Thank you for watching!
What a neat system. Nice that it is so modular.
Agreed

We love our water maker. A real game changer with regards to independence from marinas. This is especially important when cruising the Mediterranean.

@@sailingavocet absolutely. BTW, this is Ken (and sv Gita) your old boat neighbor from Ventura. :)

Great video guys. My only suggestion is to store the pickling solution separate from the system. SMBS can be corrosive to even the best grade 316SS.
Noted!

Always impressed by the thought and research behind your new projects and upgrades!

Ah yes, revival first then triage to replacement later if necessary. Loving this little unit so far!
Excellent job guys! Really well done.

Make sure the water purifier is securely installed to prevent shaking and falling.

In the engine compartment: This is a good option if there is not enough space below deck. The water purifier can be placed in a cabinet or on a shelf.
Not sure what you are referring to here, but we don’t have much space in our engine compartment to compensate the unit which is why we placed it where we did
Marissa this will sound like a weird question, but did you do comitial as Centaur?
Commercial as a centaur? No can't say I have 😂
Make sure that the purifier's water supply and drainage systems are properly installed.
It’s a desalinator, and everything is properly installed. How did you come across our video?
RO water is great, but it also strips out all the minerals. Have you evaluated adding some back in?

🤠
Is that a carbon monoxide detector, what look like a bed?
yes, we have one under the bed and in the forward cabin
It would be beneficial to me if you included the cost. Thank you.
This unit was $6,000
Enjoy all those extra dollars because I gave a like so so fast
Thank you Matt! We appreciate it!!!
Best to mix a little hard water with RO water. RO water is hard on teeth.
Hard on my stomach too! It’s on the list to mineralize the water, but we gotta make some more $$$ first
@@sailingavocet you could add some minerals that dissolve into the RO-filled glass/pitcher/pot. I’ll look for some commercial products.

Yup!
next you need hot shower dc installed
We have a hot shower…
I suppose its the camera but it sounds like a diesel engine.
Wow you must be around some quiet diesel engines then
@@sailingavocet Listen your video, YOU are around some noisy watermaker.
