- Drummer Mark Schulman checks out the new Gretsch Brooklyn series drums for us at his recording studio in Venice, CA. Mark's resume includes drumming for such acts as Pink, Foreigner, Billy Idol, Cher, Stevie Nicks and Sheryl Crow. This is part one of a two part series.
Gretsch drums were born in Brooklyn, New York in 1883. They were proudly crafted in the vibrant city for the better part of the 20th Century. Brooklyn and Gretsch share an inseparable history that is part of American music history and folklore. It is a shared legacy that cannot be duplicated. Today, Brooklyn represents a renaissance community that vibrates with contemporary artistic expression, youthful innovation and passionate musical commitment. Gretsch Brooklyn series celebrates the rejuvenated Brooklyn city passion and spirit and expands on its distinctive shared American experience.
Proudly hand crafted in Ridgeland, South Carolina, USA, by a team of veteran drum builders, Gretsch Brooklyn has a sound that is at once recognizable and essential, yet distinctively reinvented. The Gretsch drum design team molded the Brooklyn series by combining classic Gretsch elements while infusing it with new attributes. They expanded upon traditional drum designs to shape a sound that retains fundamental Gretsch characteristics while projecting a fresh voice.
I don't get all the silly trolling with this guy. Mark is a solid drummer, and has played with some serious artists. Plus, he puts on a great drum clinic and will talk drums with you for hours. He is a drum-brother and need not be disrespected. Stop trolling on TH-cam and go practice.
right on Felix!
I go practice wit your mama

All the comments about how the dude looks. How about: the kit sounds AMAZING!!!
andrewt248 Yeah..I own a Brooklyn and they do sound good, but here, they're triggered (miked to sound better)
To anyone questioning the sound... I work at a music store and Keith Carlock did a clinic at our store a few months ago and he played this kit and it really does sound this good
Mark is one of my fav drummers and I so want a Gretsch kit to add to my collection!
just seen him at the Connecticut drum show. awesome seminar! this guy is very inspiring. very refreshing !
Hi Martin - Thanks for checking out the video. As you can hear in this video, the Brooklyn series would be great for that application. The drums have a solid tone and are very strong so they can project in loud situations. Mark Schulman uses a Brooklyn kit on tour with Foreigner. Any series in the Gretsch line will perform for you. Renown, New Classic, Catalina Maple/Birch... They are all great choices for rock music.
I am a small guy and I've always liked small kits with a big sound, this is one
1thess523 did you try Sakae Pac-D. love these drums almost as much as my Ludwigs.
ahhhhh. lovely drums.... beautiful sound. Mark rocks
Have always been the pick of the Gretsch range, in my opinion.
Beautiful warm tone.
Great drums
The model # is GB4160. It's a 5x14 Chrome over Brass Brooklyn snare.
I have one of these snares...it’s not as good as the maple..
I just got a deal on a Brooklyn series and it's the best buy I've ever made! The base is the most insane thing I've ever heard. I've always been a Yamaha guy (which for the record are awesome as well) but these are incredible. As a drummer for 15 years, take my word, Gretsch should be your next drum investment.
JoeDotPHP I'm out of friggin space with 3 kits, the largest is 20 pcs, the 20th was a block given to me as a gift by Santana's late Raul Rikow (congas) and timbale player Karl Perrazo.
I'm interested in more time with these and Slingerlands. There's not one, but TWO classic former drum factories within a short walk (Slingerland) and Ludwig on 1700 Damen, if I remember the address right. Both are condo buildings. I've shown the Damen building as a Realtor and I saw the other as an agent.
Ahhh yes..... What a way to start the day with such a great sounding Gretsch kit!!!
We are offering 3 configurations right now. There is a 22/10/12/16, 18/12/14 and a 24/13/16. They are all available with or without snare. You can order individual add-on drums and build a kit so to speak but it isn't a custom system like our USA custom drums. The USA Customs are ordered as single units to "build" your kit.
Got my Brooklyns a few months ago. An amazing sounding kit ! Love the open warm tone. A great choice !
Love the sound. Awesome job guys.
Gee, those toms are warm..no wonder Brooklyns are so good.
😃
Love love love this guys dew! Reminds me of my 78 yr neighbor. Want dat noose alsO!!
This is our GB-E824-SM kit. 18x22, 7x10, 8x12, 14x16. The snare drum is a GB4160. It's 5x14 and has a Chrome over Brass shell. Sweet set up!!
Holy smokes that was great!
Mark Schulman is the man! His instructional dvd is awesome
Thank you. We appreciate your support and kind words. Great drum!!
That vintage warmth comes from poplar wood used. I've always thought of it as a cheap wood, but when used right, it bring out the warm characteristics of maple or birch nicely.
I just bought a Brooklyn 5 piece in Tabasco satin and the 14x5 COB snare, paired up with my bosphorus plates and I'm ready to cut a record with my band and do some session work. Thank u gretsch for making the best drums! I own all of the lines (besides blackhawk) and these r my favorite! Cheers!
I just bought this exact kit. Same finish, same everything. AMAZING DRUMS!!!! I actually bought a set that Mike Johnston played for a clinic I attended last week. Best sounding drums I've ever played.
Gretsch drums are great. Even their cheaper models sound great too and are good enough to be used on professional albums for recording
I agree, just bought a 4 pc, 18x24, 9x13 and 16x16,6. in Satin Tobasco, 5x14 chrome snare, couldn't be more happy with the sound and the quality- great stuff, and more affordable than the USA's. Big sound which we need in our band, really drives the music.
Great job people!
Someday the Brooklyn series will be my next kit. :)
I have been thinking that too!
Julie Birmingham
Life’s too short ...get it now. 🙂
That Gretsch sound.......Man😉👍
Thanks!! We appreciate it!
WOW, they sound awesome!
These drums sound great! The price point is great too!
Thanks! Glad you enjoy them!
Traded in my SQ2 for a USA Custom. Best decision I have ever made.
Great drums, incredible drummer.
Very Gretschy.
Amazing sounding drums! Unfortunately, I can't buy a new kit anytime soon....but when that day comes.....i think these are the ones!!
scarves are everywhere! In the Namm 2013, every freaking drummer had a scarf on. lol
great sound
Nice drums, Nice drumming.. Unbelievable..
When not close micd and tuned right they have a really strong fundamental note and a really unique voice, they take all of the tunings well too, trust me I put them through the ringer when it comes to alternate tunings.
I think the round badges are the best looking of all of your badges. I love my all mahogany Catalina Club kit that I bought. 14x20”; 7x10”; 8x12”; 14x14”; 16x16”. I also have the 18” kick for like a gong drum.
🙏
tht dude can play...and those drums sound awesome!!! the moral of this story iz: dnt sleep on gretsch baby!!!
Ever! 😎
@@gretschdrumsusa right on bro!!!
Twenty Four people disliked this video; I'd have to say it was because of the scarf and caterpillar under the guys lower lip. other than that, everything else was pretty sweet.
Thanks man!
Love the kit, but they are over egging the interview BIG TIME. I seriously doubt he's been playing the entry level kits with Velvet Revolver.
There is no doubt they sound warm, open and punchy and I think it's to do with the shell but also, and perhaps more importantly, the fact that the hoops are not die cast. I feel the shells just open up and breath a little more.
Neverokful The hoops look n almost sharp to me. I could easily see breaking a limb here or some irreplaceable sticks (HS1 Highlanders, pipe band maple sticks, almost as big as those Chong played in Up in Smoke...)
There's some historical REVELANCE to Brooklyn
Those sound tasty!
HA! good times. I was at namm in 2006. Would love to go back. For some reason though, my sponsors don't rent booth's out at namm :(
What size is the scarf?
Very good
😀
GOOD DRUMMER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Some pretty chunky grooves brother. Bitchin kit.
What snare is that?
Love the Brooklyns and have the Brooklyn COB snare, but the maple sounds better.
You always wonder, however, how much the miking enhances the sound on different videos.
1:19 groovy moves..throwing and catching the sticks
+Had Enough Yeah, must have taken years of practice. I wish I can do that move someday.
Im on a limited budget....How do the Catalinas compare w the Brooklyns
The infomercial of drums.
What heads are being used
Gretsch seems to be moving foward
The Elton John of the drum world hahaha
nice!
Sorry but we do not offer the Catalina Birch in White Marine Pearl.
I am completely sold on these drums !!!!!!!!!!!! But now the silly question, what Gibraltar cymbal stands are being used in this video???? Any suggestions on cymbal stands if you are planning on putting the toms on them????? (Tube size, double braced, etc.) I have used Yamaha stands for 20 yrs.now and I am ready for a change.
coolrunnings1058 My days of heavy-a**ed hardware are over. I'm using Sakae. Light and slim.
I would love to hear JP Bouvet play those
Why does everyone become so wild over drum specs? Drum companies? Drum shells?
Does the sound of the drum come from the head or the drum itself? The shell doesn't produce the sound, it resonates the sound. People should be asking what kind of heads you have on that kit that make it sound so good!
fordsucks27 it's kinda both, I think. Heads are everything, but you need a solid and to me, a very alive kit with lots of sharp teeth. To me, that's Ludwig Vistalites. YES, a 26 kick is a bear to live with and harder to leash than a smaller kick. Overtones is your middle name.
I usually use Moongels but I'd rather rip off a limb than play on those stupid damping pads. Thank God I have great neighbors who love my playing. You'll get satanic overtones out of undamped Vistalites, that go with next to nothing else in recorded music history but Led Zeppelin. Or Moon.
Wood, is a big difference to plastic. Then the KIND of wood makes a difference. Any wood never forgets it used to be a tree, so that alone...
Sticks make a bigger difference to me than to most. I like large, massive maple pipe band sticks. They're very light, but they have a lot of mass, should you need it. On a small kit, with small drums, they can be clumsy. V-drums, it doesn't matter.
I can't imagine my kits with Evans. I can't STAND Evans heads. If I want to hear dead, I'll go to the cemetary.
Pedals, we all know Speed King are what the old guys used. They feel like cr*p and they're slow as hell. Like pushing water uphill. DW is better, but now there's an English company that gives DW a run for the money. They make an extremely responsive hat pedal.
Just my take. It'd be cheaper to get into horns, I don't think there's 8,500 different tones with horns. You don't switch 'em out between songs... My cymbals alone are thousands of dollars.
What kind of gretsch drum would you prefer that gets a very good and solid sound and its for rock music?
a facc du cazz!!! che suono....bravo Mark
What was he using for Pink and Cher, in the Gretsch line.
He has used pretty much every line we offer. :-)
gretschdrumsusa
I wonder if he really has a favourite...they are all good.
oh cool cool...another question.. would it be possible to order a catalina birch with a white marine finish?
Where did you get your hair piece?
They are vintage emperors. Go to 4:00 it zooms in.
Sweet scarf brah.
Oscar the Gretsch. Is he "Gretschy"?!?
does anyone know if gretsch are making their own shell
how much would a 4 piece cost? or is it a custom system?
I totally hear ya, but I think in some cases (like DW) the artists aren't paid to endorse a brand, they're just given the instruments for free and/or supplied with instruments when&where they need them, which IS a kind of payment, but if they're doing it just for the gear at least you know they actually want to play that particular gear. Even if they're paid for additional advertising-type stuff I still don't think it would be worth it for them if they don't actually like the gear.
Walter T DW stuff is getting REALLY expensive. I like their pedals, but I think the drums sound too fragile for the huge cash outlay.
What's the cymbal stand to hold 2 toms? ...
where i can buy this drumset ?
He is a fabulous player but...ease up on the double kicks and the percussion barrage so I can hear the drums. ;) Great sounding kit! Every time I listen to USA Custom, Broadkaster and Brooklyns...I lean towards the Brooklyns. I can't pinpoint it but perhaps its because the toms don't get "lost" like Broadkasters (the vintage "thud" can get washed over live) and still retain a vintage sound. USA Custom doesnt sound as vintage to my ears...
What mikes were used?
mics, mike is a name
+Jace Viets Drumming This is hilarious but true.
But ya man heads is almost everything. Like the wood and stuff does matter but heads and tuning really shape the sound
Dan Klas Agree. I've taken inexpensive kits (Sakae Pac-D, saw the heads were the problem--not the kit itself, and wound up with a REALLY nice little kit that keeps up just fine with a Ludwig Bonham for...1/5th of the money. Just put coated Remos on, and you go...). You can mash 'em close to move fast, because they're small but they're powerful with a very nice tone. And the whole thing fits in a Taurus easy with lots of room for a full PA.
I can't say that about the Ludwig. It's a bear to move, as is with 20 pieces.
What set up is this (sizes)?
Ok, the drums sound absolutely amazing but there's this thing all the drum companies doing all the time, you know: "Hello Mr. Famous Drummer. Here you'll play a bit of our drums. Say you're fckin amazed by how good they sound, how fabulous they look and say you've been looking for this particular sound for all your life and i'll pay you good." and we drummers have to stand watching 2 very bad actors pulling off their roles with the hope of getting a tiny bit of useful information & sound.
I wish i could afford the Brooklyn series D: Ohh well
what heads did you guys use? on all the drums?
Mark Schulman used Vintage Emperor heads by REMO on the Gretsch Brooklyn Kit...3:59'
Sweet! Thank you! I use those drum heads, and I just wanted to know if I could nail my guess hahah
Kamil Sliwinski round
doesnt gretch ever do sharp bearing edges? gretch drums always sound so dry.
sticksbass sharp edged drums are for double-pedalled bitches
wszyscyzginiemy ppp.
What's the bass drum size?
18 by 22.
Miles Farnan Thanks! It sounds great!
Is that Sammy Haggar?
i subscribe ...
i would rather hear just the room mic, to actually know what these drums sounds like, i hate all the compression and eq. What do the brooklyns actually sound like? who knows
Wayne Gretschy
Admit it.
We all thought this was Hyde from That 70's Show.
his vest is a stick chopper
What snare is he using?
Brooklyn COB...
Take the mics off of them , and see how they sound
grim reaper As a Gretsch owner I guarantee they will cut and still sound the same. I have two USA kits and have been told my drums were louder then the band several times and I was not even mic’d up. Gretsch are the real deal and sound just like this mic’d or
not trust me!
catalina maple still the best :)
How does he stay on beat like that? Shit is inhuman.
give me and f-ing break. In that acoustic environment with all those mic's I could beat on a bucket with a spoon and make it sound good. Gretsch will be what it once was.
osterkenn I heard Buddy Rich once played on a table using matchsticks to solo with...
But it's not selling , that's due to unfair prices
i came here because it looked like a grandma playing the drums.
