    Good info on the microwave, you can buy signal blocking pouches very cheaply and they work well

  • @1kalicid

    wrap the microwave in aluminum foil HVAC tape and you'll have a successful faraday cage. I pulled the motor and interior parts from an old microwave i was going to toss out, wrapped the micro the way you wrapped your boxes and then put electronics i don't use on a daily basis in the micro to protect them from any possible EMP events.

  • @jamescameron277
    @jamescameron277 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If I might add, a 'helpful hint': when you put your phone inside any ''cell phone signal blocker', especially if using one regularly, put the phone in airplane mode before turning it off. Otherwise, your phone will drain it's battery trying to send out it's signal(s) while inside the blocking box. It sucks your battery's juice even faster than when it's just sitting around "turned off". - James "Don't even call me Heloise!" Cameron. NOTE: I didn't use the term "Faraday box, (or cage)", because the box, the one shown here, is not one. A Faraday box is used to block EMP surges, specifically, that can damage your electronic device; it's not necessarily to block the signal going to and from your cell phone. So technically, the experiment using the microwave may be valid for the receiving and/or transmitting cell phone signals, but is not valid in terms of being an actual "Faraday box", (by definition).

    Hello, I'm a EME Technical specialist
    Just to let you know it is 100% down to the operating frequency of the Microwave (oven),
    as it is designed to attenuate that very frequency from escaping (therefor also entering), usually 2.34Ghz (aka 2340Mhz) which is very close to many 5G services. That is because there is no need to block any frequency significantly lower or higher as the Microwave only creates waves at that frequency :)
    If you have a 4G and 5G service guess what....whatever can get through, will get through. Also keep on mind half and double wave length of operating frequencies can be affected.

    Microwave ovens make great faraday cages. You simply need to further insulate and ground. They are far cheaper than buying most faraday bags and some folks may have an old one laying around. Even a broken one perhaps. Very effective.
    You have holes in the door shielding. They only protect against microwaves. Not same wavelengths from cell phone, which penetrate the door. Bad quality experiment..

    Then I did.some research and found the frequency range of phone service providers (,in US) is from 600 MHZ to 2100 MHZ. I'm thinking that must play a big factor in this experiment. Or maybe there's a better antenna in the smartphone than the dumb phone?
    I also tried putting my smartphone in a stainless refrigerator and the dumb phone was still able to call it!

      Your best option is physical distance - move it into another room. Otherwise, it's difficult to shield it while making sure it doesn't overheat. Even low-power modems will eventually get REALLY hot if enclosed in any kind of small box / wrapped in foil.
