Shout out to David Bowie for talking to the MTV reporter about not including artists like Michael Jackson and Prince into MTV time slot. Music is not just for one group of individuals, it’s for everyone.
The full interview with David Bowie and the MTV VJ is worth a watch. The VJ essentially tries to snow Bowie about people in the midwest being potentially "uncomfortable" with black artists. And Bowie isn't buying it. Its really kind of sad watching the path mtv took, it was so interesting in the 90s combining music and entertainment, then it suddenly just became marathons about the worst of humanity playing it up for the camera.
Agreed, I remember it airing when I was in middle school, and several classmates getting in trouble for trying to replicate the stunts during breaktime.
I know that because of all the injuries and deaths, Jackass and shows similar to it had to place a warning to not recreate the stunts before the show starts.
@@kamsismithThe same thing happened with Beavis and Butthead because there were allegations about a kid mimicking a scene from Comedians, one of the episodes of the series, and his sister passed away because of it. His mother blamed MTV for it.
The American Skins completely missed the point of its British counterpart by trying to Americanise it. As a result, a lot of references didn't make sense, and they got rid of Maxxie, one of the best characters.
Skins wasn't the only British series that MTV remade for an American audience as they did the same thing for the Inbetweeners. Even though I haven't watched the British Inbetweeners, the American Inbetweeners feels like a mixture of Superbad and other American teen comedies from the 2000s into a television format. There's a reason why American remakes of British shows and vice versa don't always work (except The Office).
When it comes right down to it, the rules of the countries are different when it comes to the treatment of this show. Either way, did we need a US version of these shows?
I was expecting a Real World incident in which a male housemate slapped a female housemate for opening his mail. It became known as "the bitch slap heard round the world." Do others remember this?
The burst of reality tv shows was due to a writers strike that happened around the time, setting a lot of production companies back without content, so they would have "unscripted" tv series (even though we know now a lot of cast for these shows were fed lines or goaded into fighting with each other). Plus the success of the Osbornes and Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson. Then it just..grew.
The drama and conflicts is why I STOPPED watching the teen mom series. I just couldn't do it anymore. It was way too much. 99% of it was just people screaming at each other. Only 1% of it actually had anything to do with being a teen mom or raising a child in general.
The catfish woman actually acused a crew member of taking advantage of her while she was drunk even though she claimed Neve hit on her but did leave when she said no.
Shame on you for not naming the 2 men who abused Tonya. Their names are Evan Starkman and Kenny Santucci, and they allegedly assaulted her with a tooth brush down there. Poor girl... You don’t settle out of court and never invite the 2 guys back ever again if they’re innocent. 🤬 ‘em both. That was over 10 years ago so I hope Tonya is in a much better place now.
Crazy all that backlash Janet Jackson got. Fast forward to recent years when Megan thee Stallion and cardi B scissoring each other on stage at the grammys that airs on NBC and can be viewed by children
MTV DID play soul music by white artists like Hall and Oates and Culture Club back in the early 1980's. So them saying that "black music" wasn't what MTV's audience wanted was a bunch of baloney. They just didn't want to show black FACES!! 🙄
Personally, MTV and other music channels that literally have music in their name could do more than just play music videos and music themed reality shows. Music documentaries, music themed reality competition shows(like every broadcast network one you can think of) music themed game shows (like Beat Shazam) fictional musical shows, music themed etc! Just because no one watches you for music videos anymore doesn't excuse you for being this lazy!
The odd thing about the Skins US debacle… the show was NEVER gonna be as “outrageous” as it’s British counterpart. I remember having hope BECAUSE it’s MTV. But they let me down on that aspect alone. Nia was my GURL.
What made me mad about Skins US was the replacement of Maxxie, some said it was cause a lesbian girl would be less shocker than a gay boy (even when Maxxie is so adorable) and to make it worst they gave Tea (the lesbian girl) this plotline about her and Tony constant cheating on Michelle (that also happens in the UK version but it was one time situation and didnt went further) giving the idea that if you are gay you can "return to be normal" with the right person. The show by itself wasnt bad but the fans couldnt avoid comparing both shows and UK version is a masterpiece.
I never got the Beavis and Butthead 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥controversy and the mom blaming MTV . Ummmmm how about blaming your bad parenting ? You don’t let your kid play with matches . Then for Austin to say he never watched Beavis and Butthead . You’re 5 what do you remember at 5 ?
The #1 MTV scandal was, in fact, due to the TRUTH behind the “allegations” of racism… MJ was the #1 artist on the planet in the 80s and Prince shred more guitars than all MTV rock artists combined, when MTV still would not play black music. Why else did both presidents of CBS and Warner threaten to pull ALL their artists off of MTV, if they didn’t play MJ and Prince, respectively. The irony is that MTV never knew how much they needed MJ’s legendary videos, which is why they now have an MJ Video Vanguard MTV award. You cannot tell the origin story of MTV without telling the history of the Billie Jean scandal. Let’s set that record straight!
another issue has been lack of intervention by production staff during dangerous situations. for example, real world hawaii. one cast members got blitz drunk. she was filmed drinking heavily and getting into her car to drive back to the house. someone should have tackled her before getting into her care. i believe in new orleans. again a cast member got drunk and pick up a knife when another cast member invited his friends into the house without any one else's knowledge and or permission. in san diego, the cast had a party and a male attendee not on the show sexually assaulted a women in the bathroom. at times, someone should have put down the camera and got involved.
Just like TLC, HGTV, Food Network, Magnolia Network and Bravo, not every single MTV show is good. Most of them are pretty bad, such as Teen Mom, 16 and Pregnant, Skins (2011 American version), Buckwild, Floribama Shore, Sweet Vicious and a few others.
As much as I enjoy some of Justin Timberlake's songs, he just needs to be banned from the Super Bowl. Too many things get out of hand with him on stage and as much as I enjoy listening to some of his hits, I just don't think he needs to be in a family friendly enviroment acting out like that... I never saw the wardrobe malfunction, but yo...I definitely hear about it a lot.
What was Bristol Palin doing on reality TV?? She's rich and privileged. I love Jackass because everything on there is very real. MTV is so boring and irrelevant now. No wonder people turn to VH1 and Bravo TV😂😂
It didn't take long for Real World to lose it. The first season was interesting. The second, not too bad. By the third season, one of the guys tried to rape one of the girls in the hall on camera. By the forth season, they didn't even care that they couldn't find the key. The guys got naked and jumped in the pool, plus backlash over gays being they only people on (not true but close). Did anyone else get through all 1000 pages of I Want My MTV? I was actually reading it during a NYE's party! LOL The party was boring, I was just collecting all the free snacks (in a bag) and waiting for the free pizza...now THAT's the Real World!
I have to agree with MTV. At first it really was pretty much a rock station and there’s not really that many Black people in that genre. So no, I don’t think race had that much to do with it. Black music makes money and they would not have gone into something completely ignoring an entire section of the population for no good reason other than color.
I miss MTV when it was in the 90s. The 2000s became full blown reality at every turn. The fact that Janet Jackson got so much crap for the Super Bowl Half Time show and Justin Timberlake got away with his part of any blame. After that happened I never supported him again. BBC Skins was way more interesting than the American version. I saw one episode and it was so boring. None of the characters were as intriguing.

good on him. Racism does not belong on this Earth.
The late, great David Bowie asking the apt question about lack of videos from black artists was the best part here. RIP to the legend❤️💕
The full interview with David Bowie and the MTV VJ is worth a watch. The VJ essentially tries to snow Bowie about people in the midwest being potentially "uncomfortable" with black artists. What I got from this clip is that if MTV had just stuck to being a music station, all but one of these scandals never would've have happened.
The BIGGEST scandal is NO MUSIC VIDEOS but still calling themselves MTV
This 🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼🙌🏼
Or the learning channel (TLC) not showing anything educational instead showing trashy reality shows
There are too many channels to name whose programming no longer matches what their letters stand for.
They were hard on Janet, but not on Justin. There was no fairness there..
Right, the NFL even invited Justin back to headline another Super Bowl halftime show in 2018.
Janet didn’t deserve that
Jackass is the most notable scandal I can remember as people were getting injured or killed from recreating their stunts on the show.
Agreed, I remember it airing when I was in middle school, and several classmates getting in trouble for trying to replicate the stunts during breaktime.
I know that because of all the injuries and deaths, Jackass and shows similar to it had to place a warning to not recreate the stunts before the show starts.

I was expecting a Real World incident in which a male housemate slapped a female housemate for opening his mail. It became known as "the bitch slap heard round the world." Do others remember this?
That was the Real World Seattle, I think. I thought it was because a female cast member outed one of the dudes, I forget his name.
In Seattle, she didn't mess with his mail. She outed him for being gay.
@@nenarosebud658I came to the replies to ask what season it's from. Guess I don't have to ask 😅
Can't remember his name but it was Irene. She had to leave due to Lyme disease
@@nenarosebud658 it was Stephen.
Reality shows were a trend at the time huh? No wonder why people claimed that television was dead for a while.
Pretty much, in the early to late 2000s. VH1 had a lot of them too.
The burst of reality tv shows was due to a writers strike that happened around the time, setting a lot of production companies back without content, so they would have "unscripted" tv series (even though we know now a lot of cast for these shows were fed lines or goaded into fighting with each other). As a teen mom I always thought that teen mom was mostly accurate about teen mom's.
Damn, I miss the MTV of the 80s and 90s.
How could there be a list of MTV scandals and not mention the Puck/Pedro conflict from season 1 of Yhe Real World?
And the biggest one of all, Tammi vs. David!
I'm so glad Nia and Jordan were both able to better themselves and forgive each other ! It was really nice seeing them be close friends on All Stars 3
The drama and conflicts is why I STOPPED watching the teen mom series. I just couldn't do it anymore. It was way too much. 99% of it was just people screaming at each other. Only 1% of it actually had anything to do with being a teen mom or raising a child in general.

Ruthie on "The Real World: Hawaii"?
Networks being racist is so bad and common, we get to the point of saying what's new. Especially networks like mtv, E!, and comedy central

"rock music was not widely represented by black musicians"?? hmmmm do they have the slightest inkling that a black woman invented rock 'n roll?
I heard it had to do with the South and their cable providers
So Lenny Kravitz, Little Richard and Jimi Hendrix are all fictional rock stars?
What thing from MTV is NOT a scandal?
Crazy all that backlash Janet Jackson got. Fast forward to recent years when Megan thee Stallion and cardi B scissoring each other on stage at the grammys that airs on NBC and can be viewed by children

I definitely think Janet Jackson was treated unfairly with the whole Super Bowl halftime show wardrobe malfunction issue.
Yup
Um the JT & Janet thing wasn’t on MTV so it shouldn’t count!

It's alway so interesting when parents blame tv and music when they are bad parents. The tv isn't a parent. It shouldn't be raising your kids.
what about "the slap" from Real World Seattle?
MTV couldn't play videos by black artists because rock was such a popular genre ... a genre created by black artists. hmmmmmmmm?
