  • It was a wild day at Shore Acres State Park in Oregon 1/12/23. The ocean went from glass to 25' surf in a matter of just a few minutes. Mother Nature put on another spectacular show! Folks who stuck it out at the main area near the Observation platform became part of the show in that they got drenched numerous times from huge crashing waves.

Very nice. Is it often that dramatic or only on a rare stormy day?

    • @Seracdog

Thank you! Hard question to answer regarding show frequency! Also, it doesn't always take a stormy day! We have been there many times with clear beautiful weather. Prior to the 27th of December last year, it had been 14 months since the last show... quite a dry spell. Regarding becoming aware of the next "Show", I check a website called surf-forecast.com once a week or so. The site tracks surf all around the world. Enter Oregon South & Bastendorff Beach (near Shore Acres). Look for predicted wave heights of 18'+ and wave direction from the west. Two days before a possible event I check NOAA for Coos Bay to see if a High Surf warning has been issued. Occasionally, I check with Steven Michael, a local (Coos Bay) landscape photographer who is the most knowledgeable guy on the planet regarding waves at Shore Acres. Check out his Facebook page. So, if all of the other criteria are met, I head for the coast! It is a spectacle that amazingly few Oregonians know about. I have seen a tornado from 1/2 mile out, mega fireworks shows, been in Times Square on New Years Eve, in Paris on Bastille Day and seen many other spectacular events and none match a Mother Nature NON destructive show at Shore Acres! None!

Thank you, thank you! As I am sure you no doubt know... I am addicted to the waves at Shore Acres! Heck, there is no place on earth that can match the exploding wave show at Shore Acres. When I hear an event is possible I will drop what I am doing and head over to the Oregon Coast... I live nearly 4 hours away from Shore Acres.

Well, I am in love with Shore Acres and your filming is outstanding! I send this out to family and friends... one friend said it was so scary! The first time I saw your video ... I just stared in awe and amazement at it & remembered asking if you made pictures! Now I use my phone to take one!!! Thank you 😊 thank you !!!

If you would like some pictures of Shore Acres waves that will blow your mind you need to contact Steven Michael a local photographer.. He has the absolute best shots of the exploding waves at Shore Acres. No one else comes close! In the past, he has sold calendars that feature nothing but waves. Check out his Facebook page and his email address is indicated on the FB page. facebook.com/StevenMichaelPhotographyOregon/

Makes me wanna cry, really hard! I was all set to go down there for this, but was skeptical of the wave and weather forecast both. it's a bit of a long and spendy trip for me so I do have to be selective, but boy I selected wrong this time! Awesome video tho!

There are several websites I refer to, but the confirm is NOAA. If they issue a high surf warning for Coos Bay and the wave direction is from the west, I drop what I am doing and head over

@@Seracdog you did a good job with it. I can't get that, don't have MAC. I use Adobe Rush, I have Adobe Premier but it's so confusing I haven't learned it yet. You really brought out the definition of the waves tho, and I know that can be hellish hard on a day with flat light.

In fact the current wave height recorder holder...320.' Check this article out, it's quite interesting! www.beachconnection.net/news/shore_acres_wave_explained.php

I’ve watched quite a few wave videos and none give you that feeling of awe. This one did. I can’t imagine what it’s like to experience that in person. Not just the visual but the sounds heard and the crashes that are felt. I’m an Oregonian so it’s on my bucket list now. Thanks!

I have seen lot's of "live" Mother Nature events but nothing can top a wave show at Shore Acres! I have seen the show many, many times and it never gets boring! If you have plans to see a show bear in mind that there are only a handful of shows a year. Last season... maybe 5. However, if you can move quickly there appears to be a show coming next Wens./Thurs.
