134340 is the name of Pluto cause Pluto isn’t consider as a planet anymore. and yes that was jin singing when the lyric vid said it was jungkook singing instead. also im surprised that you didn’t notice but during yoongis verse he is having a conversation with someone. it’s very cool and a nice touch

134340 became the name of Pluto because it's not considered as a planet anymore, like it was kicked out from the solar system.. they used it as a reference just like when they used Whale 52 in Whalien 52.

  • @MissYellowCat

You were right 12:24 was jin. Also this song is in NASA's playlist. Pluto's name was removed and replaced with numbers when Eris(a moon) was found to be 27% bigger in mass than Pluto and Pluto got demoted and its name replaced with 134340. RM personified Pluto and turned it into basically a love song about a planet being dumped and forgotten

Actually 134340 is the asteroid number used to reference Pluto since it lost its status as our 9th planet
Eris is a dwarf planet discovered in 2005 and it's more massive than Pluto .the discovery of Eris is essentially what initiated the re -classification of Pluto

134340 it's the name given to pluto since it's not considrate a planet anymore
So here bts are using it as a comparision about how pluto was considered a planet and one day it wasn't and was kicked out of the solar sistem
So they were talking about a relationship one day they were together and another not, like they stop existing for that person (the sun) but they are condenate to circle around the sun even they aren't a important to it anymore

P.S Even NASA recognize this song they will play during launching of their litol smth along with Mikrokosmos and Moonchild.

Mad respect how they incorporated the sad story/ history of Pluto and how it got excluded and slowly drifting away from our solar system and also the story of the 52 hertz whale, its hertz is too high thats why no other whale understand it, swimming alone across the ocean hoping someone can finally understand its calling
Turn those real stories into a song MAKES ME EMOTIONAL, no wonder these two songs are my favorite

Ok so there is a lot of wordplay and crazy amazing meanings going on in this song and the translations don't do it justice and since this is one of my very favorite BTS songs I decided today to expand on those meanings and the wordplay and to also provide better translations where needed. WARNING: This is going to be a long run -on comment spanning multiple comments and these are based on my own knowledge of the korean language and my observations throughout my years as ARMY and my own research and knowledge.
0:33 First of all the title of the song 134340 is the new epithet for pluto when he got demoted from being a planet.
10:40 "parting is shameful, that unchanging color" that translation is not totally accurate and also has a double meaning. The better translation would be "Parting is shamefully meaningless, an unchanging color". The words used here to mean, "shamefully meaningless/embarrassingly worthless" in Korean is Mu-saek-hada, Mu= (none/not), saek =(color), hada (to do/to be) so shamefully meaningless also means "colorless" so another translation would be "Parting is colorless, an unchanging/monotone color" or "parting is shamefully meaningless like an unchanging/monotone color".
10:54 "What meaning do the rest of the names have in this collapsing vitality" This phrase is very weirdly translated and totally glosses over the wordplay. It should have been translated as "What meanings do the broken remnants of a name hold or have when its structure/vitality has fallen or collapsed"
Now onto the wordplay and multiple meanings and translations of that sentence (it's a lot) as well as the intricacies and connections with past works and flow of the album.
So Pluto's name in Korean is "Myung-wang-Seong" broken apart 'Myung"= name, dark, life, and honor (as in dignity or pride), 'Wang'= king, great (as in the meaning of big), and core (as in main), 'Seong'= castle, star (in pluto's case), and nature (as in construct/structure or essence or vitality). RM broke apart the word for pluto by separating "Myung" from "Wangseong" which in this case because it is combined becomes "King's castle" or "Big star" or "vitality/vigor" so many different meanings and translations can be found. Let me expand:
The first translation is this one "What meanings do the broken remnants of a name hold/have when its main structure/ main construct has fallen or collapsed".
It's very clever because what RM essentially did was break apart Pluto's name in Korean, basically destroying the structure of the name so it is no longer "Pluto" but something entirely different, a sentence that speaks of "darkness/lifelessness/brokenness" which relates to the second meaning/translation of the sentence.
Also when taken in context of their fame, this line, "What meanings do the broken remnants of a name hold/have when its structure/vitality has fallen/collapsed" may imply that without that "person/that castle/that star/that essence/the fans" their "name/their life/ their honor or pride" has no meaning which remind me of throwback BEST OF ME from the previous album ‘HER’ (which by the way means weakness in Korean). I also feel like it is a continuation to "truth untold" where they say in the lyrics "Because I can't go to you, there is no name that you can call me" which when flipped and analyzed in the context of the album and in the context of how BTS sees the meaning of their ‘name’ and ‘fame’, can be understood as ‘I can’t go to you, because I have no name’ or ‘without the name/meaning that you give me, I can’t go to you or I can’t exist around you’. I find this a very clever change in perspective, especially considering they have a song called ‘Moon’ which makes the same parallel.
The second translation using the meaning of 'Myung' as 'dark' and 'Wangseong' as 'main star' would be: "What meaning does the remaining dark or darkness hold now that you've taken away its main star or when its main star has fallen or collapsed".
The star, in this case, "the sun", is the other person in the relationship so basically RM/BTS feels like this other person has taken away their sun/star (throwback to 'let me know' where they said that "You've taken away my sun at day and my stars at night"). Also, Pluto's name in Korean translates to "dark king star or great dark star" so when you take away the word "star" all that is left is "dark king" which BTW is synonymous to the king of hell which is crazy because Pluto's equivalent in Greek mythology is 'Hades' who rules the underworld/hell. Also, when you take away the word "star" from 'great dark star', the other translation of Pluto's Korean name, the remaining words translate to "great dark/great darkness".
Another interesting part about Pluto is that its name takes on different meanings depending on the side that you focus on, Pluto roman name and character represent wealth and plentifulness (minerals in the earth etc..), but his Greek equivalent “Hades” name takes on the darker connotation and the etymology of the name 'Hades' also means “the unseen one” which ties into how “Pluto/hades” is no longer seen or important because its meaning/its nature has been revoked or changed, just like the meaning of the God's name changes depending on its construct.
Part of this second translation is when 'Myung' is used as the meaning of "honor/pride/dignity" and 'Wangseong' is used as the meaning of 'great star'. That change turns this phrase into this: "What is the use of the remaining pride/dignity, when this great star has collapsed/fallen?" or better yet "To this fallen great star, what use/meaning does remaining pride/dignity have?"
The third translation using the meaning of 'Myung' as life" and 'Wangseong' as 'core vitality/core essence' would be: "What meaning does the remainder of a life hold when its core vitality/core essence has collapsed or when you've taken away its core essence or core vitality".
This has the same principle as the previous translations/meanings. Without "wangseong" which in this instance takes on the meaning of "core vitality or core essence", "Myung" which takes on the meaning of 'life' has no meaning/purpose or worth just as mentioned in the "colorless/monotone" line in the beginning.
Part of the third translation is when 'Myung' is used as the meaning of 'honor/pride/dignity' and 'Wangseong' as the meaning of 'main essence/ main nature'. This phrase turns into "What meaning does the remaining dignity/honor/pride hold or have when its core essence/ main nature has collapsed?" or "when you've taken away its main essence". Basically, there's no use to pride/dignity when you have nothing left.
The fourth translation using 'Myung' as the meaning of 'name' and 'Wangseong' as the meaning of 'great castle' would be: "What meaning would its remaining name have or hold when this great castle has fallen or collapsed" or "To the fallen or collapsed great castle, what is the use/meaning of a remaining name?"
This is self-explanatory. What's the point of naming/associating meaning to a fallen/broken thing/home. This meaning also relates to previous songs and metaphors that they've used. The structure/castle here is referring to the relationship which reminds me of "house of cards", a previous song in their HYYH era where they compared their relationship to a collapse prone/fragile house of cards. Second, this line is a total follow up to "truth untold", the song right before this one on the album, in "truth untold" they describe their life/their identity/residence as a "sandcastle/ Mollaeseong" and by the end of the song that "castle" had collapsed/fallen" and was left alone.
The fifth translation using 'Myung' as 'honor' and 'Wangseong' as 'King castle' would be: "What meaning would the remaining honor/dignity hold when this King castle has fallen/collapsed" or "To this fallen King's castle, what use/meaning does the remaining/honor/dignity/pride have/hold?" Again self-explanatory, there’s no meaning to pride when all that's left behind are ruins.
    To be continued...

    • @ginouclint7845
      @ginouclint7845 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Continuing from 10:54
11:03 "Just receive until I die your sweltering gaze" is awkwardly translated and should be translated as: "i'll probably experience/be subject to your suffocating gaze until I die".
The choice of words implies a sense of perpetual helplessness, as in he/they think or know that this relationship or this person has forever left a mark or will forever be a constant phenomenon in their lives, which reminds me of 'OUTRO HER' (where they compare themselves to the pages of a book, and the fans/the other person to the owner of that book who's turning the pages and reading or writing the story of that book/their story) and foreshadows 'OUTRO TEAR' (where they say that 'this tear' (wound/hurt/collapse of the relationship) and 'the tears' (the sadness that comes with it) will forever be on repeat because they will never be able to forget that relationship/that person because they became a part of their lives/story/book or because they ultimately left a stain in their life or wrote the book itself.
Also, when taken in the context of their life as celebrities/superstars, this sentence takes on a different meaning and implies that even when they are no longer in the "spotlight" or when they are retired, they will still be in the public eye and their lives/their story will still be subject to the invasive/suffocating eyes/gaze of the world.
11:06 "although I still circle around you and nothing has changed, if I have no name in love, then everything has changed" is a good translation but this line could also be translated as "Although I still orbit around you and nothing has changed, If this love has no name then everything has changed".
The word for 'name' also means 'title' as in entitlement or 'authority' so another translation could also be "Although I still orbit around you and nothing has changed (for me), if this love has no entitlement/authority then everything has changed". Basically saying that "Although I'm still me/my feelings haven't changed/ 'I still want you' (the line from truth untold) if my feelings have no hold on you anymore/ you are no longer mine/ my love has no rights/authority on you then everything has changed". Again, tying back into the line about taking out the meaning of something and making it useless/worthless.
11:24 "Did you really find Eris" or "Have you really found Eris?" This line is so layered and clever but everybody overlooks it.
First of all, Eris is 'another dwarf planet' the second-biggest dwarf planet to be exact, and its discovery is the reason why "Pluto" was demoted to being "134340". Before Eris being found Pluto was still considered to be adequate and worthy of being an actual planet or part of the solar system, so a substitute for Eris would be "something better/bigger". So that line could be "Have you really found something better?"
The next layer of meaning revolves around the etymology of the word/name "Eris' which also can have the meaning of "to raise, to stir, to excite" so another meaning would be "Have you really found something more exciting, more stirring?"
Another layer of meaning, the most mind-blowing one, relies on the fact that "Eris", in greek mythology, is the goddess of strife and discord, and like Pluto/Hades who is king/ruler of the underworld, she is also associated with darkness because she is the daughter of "Nyx" ( the goddess of night, loneliness, and death) and her other alleged parent 'Erebus' is a god of darkness and chaos. Both of these Gods are considered to be the original Gods because they were both born of nothingness and are older than the concept of time and life itself and that makes “Eris” a very powerful and a super destructive Goddess, known to cause mayhem/war and separation, and more often than not ‘death’.
So that line could also be seen as "Have you really found strife/discord (in me/in our relationship)" basically asking if they found something "unpleasant/amiss" in the relationship and if that is the reason why they/the sun/the other person moved on or abandoned them.
11:26 "What does that moon have, that I don't?" As explained earlier, in the solar system Eris is also considered to be a moon. The word for Moon is Korean is "dal" and that word also means 'daughter' so another translation is "what does that daughter have that I don't?" which again supports the greek mythology thing because "Eris" is the daughter of Nyx (alone) or with Erebus depending on who's telling the story. So Pluto (God of the underworld) is asking the sun what 'Eris' (daughter of the night and chaos, goddess of discord and strife) has that he doesn't.
      to be continued...

      Continuing on from 11:26
Eris is also depicted/known to be super vengeful and as explained previously, as the goddess of discord, she is responsible for a lot of misunderstanding and separation/break-ups which ties into the next line.
11:29 "Us is the plural of U, somehow it's like "I" was never there from the beginning". Apart from the obvious cleverness (wordplay) in this line, where 'Us', which is supposed to mean "YOU and I", was deconstructed to mean 'US' as in "You/U" with an S at the end, so basically 'U's' plural form", there is also a hidden double meaning.
That meaning is related to the line on "Eris" and her depiction as a super vengeful goddess, as the goddess of discord, who responsible for a lot of misunderstanding and separation/break-ups.
The reason is that the word RM used for "plural" in Korean is "boksu" and that word also means "Revenge". So another translation of the phrase would be "Us is U's/your form of revenge, somehow 'I' was never there from the beginning" or better yet "This version of "US", where somehow 'I' never existed from the start, is U's/your form of revenge".
Furthermore, there is the concept of the separation/break-up of the word "US" into 'U and I' where 'U/you/the sun' has moved on because of Eris (discord or something better), and 'I/Pluto'/BTS is left behind, unseen (like the greek meaning of the name) and struggling to pick up the pieces/remnants of the broken "US" (just like the line in the beginning "What meanings do the broken remnants of a name hold or have when its structure/vitality has fallen or collapsed"). And then there is also the concept of Eris causing discord/war and death is very prominent and Pluto/Hades picking up/collecting the remnants of death or the souls or what's left of the human being after their passing.
This layer is so clever not only because of the whole "Eris" being the goddess of strife and discord thing/being known to be a vengeful thing, and both her and Pluto being both Gods, and part of the solar system but also because from the very beginning of his verse RM has been playing on the structure of words and the change of their meaning in relations to that structure which ties back to the overall theme and meaning of the song, and its title.
11:34 "You'll understand these words too someday your season was always you" this line was mistranslated, it should've been "You'll understand these words someday, my season was always you".
This reminds me of dead leaves where RM/BTS talks about a "fifth" season (a world/season that exists only in their memories, always green like summer, while the truth/the reality is that the relationship is dead/dying and they are only holding onto the memories and refusing to move on.) Relating to the overall theme of the song which depicts this "person/pluto" who's orbiting aimlessly and endlessly around this "other person/thing/relationship" holding onto memories and feelings that ultimately have no meaning and only serve as a painful reminder of what used to be/what they don't possess or have anymore.
11:39 "My cold heart is 248 below freezing, it stopped on the day you erased me, damn!" This line is again awkwardly translated and would be better translated as "The temperature of my cold heart is 248 below zero, it stopped/froze on the day you erased/discarded me, damn!". The word for erased is also the word for discard/throw away in Korean and -248 or 248 below zero is the part of the average temperature level on Pluto.
14:57 "Irregular, without meaning, without you, the reality of my orbit" a better way to put it would be "Irregular, without meaning, without you, such or that is the reality of my orbit".
      THE END

You were right, it was Jin, not Jungkook. Believe in your ears. These color coded videos often make mistakes. The fact that you can recognize their voices makes me believe that you’re genuinely into BTS music and listen to their songs frequently. Unlike some reactors only react to their music just to post the videos but never listen to the songs again. Then it’s a lie to say such things like: “I love this song. It’s so good. BTS is so great. I’m an ARMY, a fan...” Blah blah blah 😑

the live performance's subtitle is accurate. the translation of lyrics videos are always horrible actually lol. there are so much mistranslations and they even miss some words very often. don't ever trust the lyrics videos. It's just nonsense every time i watch them. if you wanna read accurate translation, search it on twitter. there are a lot of translation accounts and they are mostly very accurate and also explaining the meaning behind it as well.
