    I usually try to keep it positive around here, but I thought I'd try something different and fun to start the new year! I usually don't use the word ugly, but for this video and for some sofas, I made an exception! 😂 Don't take this too seriously - I love you all! Even if you love kitschy farmhouse! 👩‍🌾👨‍🌾❤️

      That's like a day care classroom that has labeled everything for preschool children to teach them to read. A sign on the table that says 'table', a sign on a chair that says 'chair', and other signs in the classroom that say 'door', 'window', 'wall', etc.

    My biggest design pet peeve is the neutral nursery. Your baby does not care how trendy their room looks! Your baby needs a functional, colorful room to learn and explore in and white walls with grey arrowhead blankets aren't gonna do that for ya.

    • @liisaky
      @liisaky 3 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I am not sure if this is scientifically true, but contrasting and bright colours should stimulate babies’ sense of perspective and space, so an all grey nursery would not only be sad, but nit stimulating enough

      @@diannt9583 I want a monochrome kitchen because every one I've ever had growing up has usually been on the dingy side, XD. Also, you can always accent the room with other things. Grey/silver, white, and black pair well with pretty much everything, so maybe get like some red pot holders and dish towels, and some red cannisters for sugar, flour, and something else. Or a bowl of red apples. Or oranges (and they can totally be fake, lol). Or a vase of flowers. But I feel I could do more when a kitchen is a basic color than if the person decided to make it blue (though I do like most blues), or yellow, or olive green...or even a red kitchen. If you're moving into a new home, now you have to renovate the space to make it your own instead of just adding colorful accents to a good, if not "meh" kitchen. "Meh" can be spruced up, but I can't do crap except start all over when someone strongly imposed their favorite color all over the room, lol.

Going back a little further you can get into the fabulous art deco styles. I don't even bother with modern trends for the most part. The really good stuff has already been done.

      @ThisIsMyFullName 3 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      I wouldn't say all the good stuff has already been done, minimalism and industrial is a good example of that. It's more the fact that there's a lot of crap being done that overshadows the good, because a lot of people are playing interior designers without even understanding the basic styles (victorian, art deco, mid-century, postmodernism and so on). In the 1940s interior design was done by professionals for magazines, which the public then read and made their homes look like. That's why older interior design seems so much better, they were done by professional who had a vision and an eye for design.

While I don’t have anything that would be considered crazy, I refuse to paint my house a color I don’t like. And I don’t want to moving into a neutral grey, depressing, blah house.

Amazing lavender and grey/olive floral jacquard fabric curtains which i made. Floor is weathered plank with darker and lighter browns. A most welcome room.

      @Deeds To The Deeder lolol. Not having been in jail i can't say it feels like that to me. However there are grays then there are grays. Darker ones can be oppressive. Many people make the mistake of picking a nice color that turns out far too dark for their space. If you go to a home improvement store, just look at the assortments of greys. There are warm greys which have more yellow and cool greys which have more white. Grey is considered a neutral color like white, beige. You can put so many things with it. A very soft and very light silvery grey i find soothing like gentle mist. ( it is not silver, just had in the name, i think . i searched for weeks and many stores to find what i liked. ) then i chose what i wanted to go in the room with it. So we had to have an islands to have work space. The previous owner had put in a penasula which I hated because it cut off the kitchen and was difficult to walk around. One one side was a bunch of chairs and the otherside was workspace and even worse it had two levels. I hated it. You must like galley kitchens (I do too) but that wouldn't work in my space at all. It is too open and choppy.

    I have a weird obscure main floor bathroom down a dark little hallway that people are always saying “uh where’s your bathroom?”
    I bought a bright little white sign that’s vintage looking that says “Powder Room” and hung it above the door. voila! People can suddenly figure out where the bathroom is. I totally get it about the signs, but that one was worth it

      In a previous house, our guest bathroom was a nautical theme and I put an anchor on the door and would tell guests,' it's the room with the anchor on the door'. When we moved into our current house, my husband who loves a nautical theme and anchors, suggested that an anchor on a bathroom door is a trend that just needs to go. We don't have anything on our guest bathroom now but with COVID 19, we haven't had any guests over at our house anyways.

    But I do have to tell you, my sister bought the marshmallow reclining sofas for her den - three of them - cupholders and all. With a 60" TV, I gotta say 8 people can be more comfortable than at a theater. Also, she'd had them all of two days when I dropped a fresh cup of coffee -cream and sugar- all over one seat. I was horrified at myself and she just laughed and said, "Grab a rag, it wipes right up!" She had already "christened" her own seat.

      I really enjoy some colour and I hate how in all kind of "make overs" everything is just blasted to death with neutrals. I get the benefits of neutrals on some pieces of furniture you want to keep using, move with and style for years to come. But wall colours, blankets, pillows, rugs etc. are a good way to add some happy or moody colours to give your space character. When I painted my current bedroom a yellowish green pastel it enhanced the space a lot. There was a nice contrast with the white beams of the roof and the space looked soooo much more open, welcoming and happy. I also enjoy a lot of organic textures and would love to see more of them.

      In my homes I've always gone for the clean lined, linear sofas and chairs. Recently while moving house we stayed in an Airbnb with an L-shaped, faux leather marshmallow sofa - truly hideous ...
      Omigod, I could barely manage to raise myself from it the entire month we were there ... I would have slept on it if my husband had allowed me ... I will never buy one - but perhaps I could insist on a vacation home with a marshmallow once or twice a year? Please?

      Same. I used to have more stylish looking furniture, but was kind of glad when we had kids and they destroyed it all because you could never lay down comfortably. The arm rests were all about looks, not comfort. Now we have marshmallow sectional pieces with pillowy arm rests and recliners and I love it. I never cared for the cupholder pieces, though they probably come in handy to force some separation when your kids and pets all want to sit on top of you when there are like 5 other places they could sit.

      It looks nice, but it doesn't have kitsch all over it. Why? Because it's about FUNCTION.
      I can get all the chickens, cows, goats, et al, that I want, simply by stepping outside the door.

      OMFG when my mom bought her house she bought it in part because it had a gorgeous wood herringbone accent wall that stretched through the living room and kitchen. And the guy who was selling it told her that the real estate guy he had been talking to wanted to paint over the wall because it would make the house harder to sell. And just, what? Granted, it isn't a traditional herringbone wall since the wood is intentionally frayed and the stain is a deep red, but it adds so much personality to the house. Glad the previous owner refused to paint it over because otherwise the house would have been just your average cookie cutter rambler home.

      Houses that have been sitting on the market for months would say otherwise...there are some things that, like it or not, are universally appealing. Unless you don't mind continuing to live out of your house for a year or more after putting it on the market until you find that buyer that appreciates your unique flavor of your home, it's better to go simple with the style and allow the buyer to better envision themselves there as they're touring the rooms. Doesn't mean it has to look completely lifeless with nothing unique, but just try to find a happy medium, perhaps, between what's popular for the day, and what suits you.
