Until the 1990s, Shibuya was a rundown, dangerous town. To the point where women shouldn't walk alone at night. The local government, local residents, and police worked together to eliminate delinquents and criminal organizations. In recent years, it has been redeveloped into an adult town, with improved public safety and a cleaner city, making it a popular tourist destination for foreigners. It's a monster city with 3.3 million people passing through every day, but there's still order.
Thank you very much for sharing this interesting history about Shibuya! I was totally shocked to know that Shibuya was unsafe back in the day. I’m sure a lot of foreigners would be shocked to hear this and might find it hard to believe. I can guarantee you that it’s one of the places I feel safest and most comfortable in Tokyo right now. The Shibuya residents and police must have worked so hard and tirelessly to turn Shibuya into a safe and vibrant neighborhood in Tokyo. I’m so grateful for all their hard work!
