The entire Gospel of Mark is written as a meditation on the destruction of the Second Temple of Jerusalem in the year 70 and what Jesus' apocalypse (revelation) meant. What did his crucifixion and empty tomb mean about how to live in the midst of so much suffering? The Kingdom of God he preached is not a goal accomplished, is not a place we go when we die, and does not offer certitude of power and safety. Rather, it is a way, a practice of imitating Jesus in lowliness and self-giving and a rejection of the desire for power-over. This way of faith is not an easy way, but it is a way that leads to life.
