Short version, even a philanthropist/humanitarian needs food, clothing, water and shelter. And to be compensated for the value they add to the community and the world.
I don't understand how people can be so ignorant in thinking that non-profit founders shouldn't make money. If the people who run charitable organizations are spending all of their time doing that, what time is left to earn a living? You have to be able to live in order to run a business, even a charitable one. Can't do that if you starve to death. Duh.
Tons staff , board members, coaches, medial board make millions. Nation football league commissioner, hospitals, universities are mostly all non profit..Biggest thing is Non profit can't be sold, it can't be liquidated in a well,,, In other words in continues on for the cause, or it dyes off. .... Duke University is non profit.. budget of well over 2 BILLION.. Head coach made 9 MILLION which 7 MILLION was his duke salary... My daughter started a non profit when she was 16. and it so non profit that we have invested 10 thousand or more plus we each put at least 20 hours a week, now she is 18 and its catching ground and currently in official 501 mode, I feel as long as at least 50% is going back to the cause thats perfectly acceptable and on a 40-60 work PLUS weekwork at 18 she could draw 50K, but only after the bench mark of 50% has been made and 80K for myself.. I'm hoping we can get there in 3 years. But i still work a 60hr plus week at my own business sine 1992. You can expect someone to work a 60 hour week and not get at least 75% of whats market value. Does anybody reading this give 25% of their paycheck to charitable cause? PEACE
I feel like the salary aspect, is also a self worth thing. I come from a low income area, and my goal is to provide millenials in the local area with the skills and resources to produce food for their families, and gain independence, and to improve the local economy by keeping people working and spending in the province. Low wages really effect your morale and self esteem, and thus quality of work. I'm so glad I found your channel. You are so clear and informative!
I absolutely 100% agree with you! Self worth is a huge component of the salary thing! As long as you are reasonable in your ask and doing the work to bring in the funds while still making your program work o believe you are well within your right to be paid. As the results and program grow, so will your income.

This has been the best explanation of how to work for my nonprofit. It's helped me also decide to not continue with a consultant who after 5 years has NEVER explained this to me. You can make an income as a nonprofit if you want to be a beggar for a living... Nonprofits don't actually DO any work...they make phone calls and in my experience they virtually shame and guilt people into giving to their cause. Then, in some cases, the so called "recipients" only receive about 1/3 of the "donations". The rest is used to pay the "CEO" a most handsome salary...(the GoodWill Industries CEO gets upwards of a million a year....not sure what she does for that kind of money). Then there's all the administrative fees, office supplies, postage for all those flyers you get in the mail...a janitor? maybe; to clean the offices which are pretty lush and "inviting" to "show off" for potential donors?? .... Then there's the helpers wages & travel costs to get to those foreign places that the NP is supposed to be helping; plus food and lodging for the staff. Sure...YOU CAN MAKE LIVING WITH A NONPROFIT AGENCY...but do the people you are trying to help receive enough help to not need you anymore??? Isn't that the true goal for those who assist the less fortunate???...getting people OFF CHARITY AND WELFARE??? And isn't that the bummer??? You're supposed to help people stand on their own...but to stay in "business" you have to keep people in poverty....what a scam!!! We all need to simply help those we want to help and stop trying to make money in "NON-PROFIT"...the name itself says it all. YOU don't PROFIT from a NON-Profit....simple linguistics.
I read that if you are a board member, you can not pay yourself. Also, if you are receiving Grants, you must peruse the grant usage guidelines carefully because some grants specific what the funds can be used for, and some specific that none of the grant funds can not be used for salary. ( A friend used some grant proceeds in an area other than what the grant specified and was fined and had to pay the grant back. I don't thinks she ever did however, she eventually shut down). I had a nonprofit for about five years, and shut it down because I wasn't making enough money to pay myself, or run the program.
I’m sorry to hear about you and your friend’s nonprofits having to shut down. Whether for profit or nonprofit, many businesses find it hard to stay open past the five year mark. In regard to the board member aspect-you can get paid as a board member BUT you cannot vote for your salary. You would have to recuse yourself from the meeting and allow all the others to vote. It is true that grants must be used as the guidelines state. When applying it is always best to be upfront about how it will be used.
The other way a nonprofit is different than a forprofit is that the profits don't go to anyone person, they all go back into the nonprofit programing so that the profits go directly to the cause you are serving. That is the key to a nonprofit, without that, it is just a regular forprofit business.
This was REALLY good and you say ranting I say passionate communication, I’d be the one feeling bad although I know I need a salary as a single mom AT least by my third year of having my nonprofit. A lot of this is soooo intimidating but one of my friends with an accounting background recently told me about someone that we both know at a school my daughter goes to has a nonprofit, I think talking to people like that will help my process get easier because I’m literally at the point of just saying forget it, it’s to much work. To have that thought is disheartening because I KNOW I’ve been enlightened to do start a youth center😏
Remember that this is all a journey! If you need to make an income work on that piece first and do this as a side hustle, hobby and as it grows then make it full time. Get your status and work on it slowly over time. It’s okay to go slow and start small!
@DeeDvaHayes we must be on the same page of interest. Wish you where in Sacramento, and I would find you and say girl let's do this! AnyHoo.. @TheSocialifeDiaries thank you for reassuring my thoughts on how in the hell am I supposed to pay rent, gas and get to help my community. Well on the honest tip, I took off from working at the hospital to evaluate myself and help my teens transition to middle and high school with one AUTISTIC. I wanted to merge my healthcare background assisting youth, being a parent resource for parents and. students. But had to rely on county assistance to pay rent. And use my healthcare background to help my neighbors in my complex, like groceries, picking up their kids, taking people to Dr appt. Where they paid me gas and I added the time and the travel costs up, where now irs listed my as self employment last year, because I wrote all that off. this year I wanted to start my own youth center, but something told me no engage more and networking more. So I did. I joined the PTA for my kids school, started a girl's group, mommies group, threw an event and the outcome was incredible of over 120+ attended. And I joined the school district board funding committee that oversees how all the schools within the district spend their funds on priority needs. Also became parent liasion at my kids school due to the other person quitting I ran to the principal and asked if I can have position, now I'm waiting for my 1st check. not much hours but at least it's something. I meet so many people from community engagement conferences from school staff, to superentindent to state capital employees, to state educational law employees just in the past 8 months. Now I am invited to the Reno 3day conference this July, gas, hotel, food paid by school district and I can take my family. So the best advice is to research network first. before you just jump into starting business. so many business struggle to keep running, and I don't want to fall in that category.. I want to start something else creative this week for my bday while kids are on spring break but I need to do a whole new social media accounts not base off my side hobby of digital music art. if you have any ideas DM Instagram @beauteymafia or twitter
Some nonprofits have administrative costs and payroll and others like mine don't, we put 100% into the program and nothing goes to the administrative costs. Our board pays for their own lunches and gas, our volunteers that spend money out of pocket are not reimbursed, kinda not nice, but we are all volunteers that would rather give out more burritos and bottled water to the poor, than take that food away to pay for gas... When you first start up a nonprofit, you need to consider how you want to spend the money you collect, if you want to run a transitional housing home, you can easily make a profit after costs, if you are feeding the poor, you will go broke! We started feeding 100 people per day, now we feed 350 each day and with more money coming in we will expand to another program, giving MUST be your hobby! If you are doing this to get rich, your nuts! We also have a transitional housing program, where we charge $10 per night and require everyone to work at a job! We also provide jobs and teach floor covering installation and interior/exterior house painting. We pay our clients $10-15 per hour, I am a licensed general contractor, so it is a win, win, they learn a trade and get paid a fair wage, and I can do larger jobs! We are always looking for more types of jobs to send our clients to. We also offer "fiscal sponsorship" if you would like to operate a transitional program yourself, we do not charge any fees and you can use the sponsorship to apply for grants and all of the benefits of a 501c3. If you want to contact me, to prove we are legit and give you more info about us, you can look me up at Guidestar.org search: The Studio of Hope Corporation
Giving as a hobby! I love it! Looks like your doing great and thanks for offering the fiscal sponsorship via guidestar! Love your mission so keep it up!
Thank you so much for the great input! I am working on a project that am sure will be beneficial to many, since I've been there and know it, and I was wondering how I would be able to raise funds and eventually get paid, and your video really helped! Thank you!
Great video! I have a question. Do we have to specify that percentage we’re taking out into the bylaw? All non profit bylaw I’ve seen have “no compensation to board members.” Im in the process of starting my nonprofit organization and will like to know for future reference.
10:00 lets say the founder is bringing in 10 mil annually form direct fundrasiung for the non profit, does the founder deserve 1 mill? I say yes, you? Also where are the lagilites here on caps if any?
There is a lot to be said about what’s going on in the community with black lives matter but to change anything we must also change .I plan on starting a nonprofit called “Train the 9” were we will invest in helping those out of poverty struck areas pay for the 120$ police test and pass physical test required here in Washington. I believe there must be more diversity in our communities law enforcement. If anyone has any helpful info we are all ears and always open to new great minds to support.
Oh I have signed up already and shared your page with a few people!! I'm trying to watch ALL of your videos but focusing on the one's that deal the information about the board members and the initial set up first.

That is the biggest misconception about nonprofits. I was a financial analyst at a nonprofit of around 300 employees. The best way to know if a nonprofit is doing well or to compare for research purposes is to look at their 990. It can show the salary of the CEO, CFO, and other VPs as well as what they spent. You'll do great! Planning is a salient aspect and very important! Good luck with your future endeavors!
Love your stuff. I've watched dozens of videos and yours was very informative. Compared to other channels that are all bout non profits. Would love to chat with you privately either on the phone or email.
I do charge a $75 fee for 1-1 calls but have a course that walks you through the entire process for $50 from start to finish. You can connect with me in the tribe by grabbing your invite at ashleetate.com
I hope you will see this, and may be able to answer my question. I am not concerned with paying myself. I am only concerned with, literally, keeping the lights on. I have a building. And eventually, I will be able to keep the bills paid with festivals and such. However, until then, I need some way to pay the electric and water. Can I rent out two of the offices to generate money for the non profit? and I love how you said to get a comparable job, OR TWO OR THREE! lol YES! many many many different hats! From engineer to toilet cleaner! But it is a labor of love!
What if you bought all the equipment yourself before starting a nonprofit? Can your sale your equipment to the nonprofit? Also if you found a building for rent, do I use my own money to start the business image and activity? Do I get my own money back out of the donations?
Awesome video! Thank you. I am curious about something: If I’m able to pay myself and staff what we are worth, then what differences are there in terms of salary, compared to a for profit?
Hi I love your information it's well needed in my life. I'm new to the for prophet in a non-profit. Maybe you can help my goal is to have an organization around our culture people of color. And it starts with young people helping them to know who they are and where they come from and their culture. What is my first order of business that I need to do in order to make my organization a winner for all of us.
Hi there and thanks so much for reaching out! If you’re ready to start I would suggest checking out my course where I walk you step by step from idea to filing. You have access to an entire group of current and past students to answer questions along with myself along the way. You can find the course at unleashyourpurpose.thinkific.com
My opinion? The value of help/management should be reflective? Example, as a director/founder, not making allowances for compensation such a terrible precedent, valuing founder's hard sweat and sacrifice @ nothing/worthless. How does the organization ever transition to a professional administration, or transition @ all? Founders set a floor of self worth. Not saying the initial compensation can't be deferred, but @ least the precedent for compensation is established...

I was thinking about what I can do for kids, my wife is a teacher. I was thinking we would have a lot to offer kids. But I would be taking ten steps back and my house I own would be to small. I was thinking then maybe I could do a non profit foster care and possibly start a small ranch and donate the organic beef to the local shelter and maybe do a food stand for the homeless. I just don’t know where to start or how to. Anyone a pro out there ????
Hi love the content! But I have a question. Why would people be a board member and be okay with not being paid in a non profit? Don’t they need to making a living too just as a founder?
I have a scenario question, let's say I have a non-profit - a museum of some kind- and I want to make money off of the educational aspect of that business can I do that? Like schools pay to come in and do field trips or companies, who donate items that we then display, pay me for PR like (they did a good thing here "cool points" for this company) or even Like the gift store in the museum can I "pocket" or pay myself with that income? or is that not ok>or as long as that's in the business plan it's acceptable?

The other way a nonprofit is different than a forprofit is that the profits don't go to anyone person, they all go back into the nonprofit programing so that the profits go directly to the cause you are serving. That is the key to a nonprofit, without that, it is just a regular forprofit business.
You’re absolutely right!
You were so informative and a great presenter. I wish you the very best in all your nonprofit ventures. I look forward to viewing your links.
Thanks so much Janet! That means a lot! Wish you the best as well! Come

The Socialife Diaries that’s awesome thank you, happy new year 🎊 🙏🏾
@DeeDvaHayes we must be on the same page of interest.
Thank you! This helps me to have a more clear understanding of how we build our strategy once we get more money come into our nonprofit.
Fantastic!
I love the info the fact u share this 4 free and i know it isnt everything but thank you.
That’s super sweet! Thank you so much for saying that! I’m so glad it helps!
Thank you so much for the great input! I am working on a project that am sure will be beneficial to many, since I've been there and know it, and I was wondering how I would be able to raise funds and eventually get paid, and your video really helped! Thank you!
Oh there are so many ways. Remember your nonprofit is a business. How were you planning to monetize it?
Thank u for this, this was so helpful! Hope all is well ur way! 💜
Thank you so much for letting me know it helped! What are you building?
@@Ashlee_Tate I'm not quite sure just yet, I'm just gathering up a bunch of general info for now before I decide!...Keep up tha good work! 😊
Great video! I have a question. Do we have to specify that percentage we’re taking out into the bylaw? All non profit bylaw I’ve seen have “no compensation to board members.” Im in the process of starting my nonprofit organization and will like to know for future reference.
I just got hired as a development associate for a start-up non-profit. This is my first job in the non-profit world. These videos are helpful.
I’m so glad! Changing the thinking from nonprofit to social impact business will be huge for the industry!
Can we network
I hate it when ppl always have a problem with getting paid , ppl just need to stay in their lane but thanks my Sister for the video
It’s a tough hurdle for so many people. Hoping this video can change that.
You inspire me sooo much! Thank God for you!
Well you just made my day!!!!! Thank you so much! Come join us in the FB Socialife Tribe!
10:00 lets say the founder is bringing in 10 mil annually form direct fundrasiung for the non profit, does the founder deserve 1 mill? I say yes, you? Also where are the lagilites here on caps if any?
The salary is determined by your board. Everyone must vote and ensure that the duties match the pay.
Thank you for the informative answer to a difficult question.
Thank YOU so much for watching AND for those kind words! Appreciate it!
I truly hope you moved forward with this plan!
Thank you for sharing your passion and what works best for you.. this was so helpful.

Great video! Would of been able to finish if it was a little more written out and planned; so it could of flowed smoother. Even just bullet points, especially for your examples, would have helped. Thanks for the great information!! 👏🏽

I didn't know so many people decided not to have a salary but run a non profit business..this is surprising..because I have juggled the idea of starting a non profit.. but i always thought once everything was set up... we all would have salaries ...except the volunteers...
That’s a good goal! You are running a business!

Thanks for sharing this valuable input. This is great info about understanding how to structure the admin cost.
So glad it helped!!! What brand are you building?
I am glad I came across your videos. This is very helpful to me. I just completed a Ph. D in health services and I really want to start investing on my non profit which is an area I really want to be. Advice please.

Thank you. I want an non-profit so bad & want to help but everyone tells me I need to make a living and do something else
Maya, it’s true you will need to make a living while you build any business but most of who started nonprofits started on the side until we have the means to JUST do the nonprofit business. Keep moving forward on your dream while you make a living for yourself! Also come join us in the tribe if you haven’t already! Grab your invitation at AshleeTate.com!
Yeah right. Follow your heart. Non profits are lucrative.
Yes...u need to have a source of income to avoid burn out. Then you dont have to live on your NGO
Absolutely you can!
Absolutely right. Well said.
Thank you so much Deann!! Appreciate it!
What if you bought all the equipment yourself before starting a nonprofit? Can your sale your equipment to the nonprofit?
Also if you found a building for rent, do I use my own money to start the business image and activity? Do I get my own money back out of the donations?
Generally the answer is no. You may have the opportunity to be reimbursed if your board says it’s possible. Most of the startup costs are a wash.
Great info! I dont know what your non profit organization is about but maybee you can mentor me! Looking forward to more videos!
I’d love to! Go to Ashleetate.com/workwithme
Awesome video! Thank you. I am curious about something: If I’m able to pay myself and staff what we are worth, then what differences are there in terms of salary, compared to a for profit?
It must be reasonable to the market and agreed upon by your board members
Thank you for a great explanation.
Glad it was helpful!
Very realistic and relevant video
Appreciate that thank you!
Ranting? Yes you hit this on the nail.
So glad it was helpful! Thank you for watching!

Another great piece of advice!
Appreciate that!
Thank You, this was really helpful❤
Great content, thank you for sharing. How can I separate my nonprofit with my for profit?
Separate bank accounts. The accounting is the biggest issue.
Agreed. Great points!!
Excellent points🤔 thank you for sharing 👍🌈🌺

I was thinking about what I can do for kids, my wife is a teacher. I was thinking we would have a lot to offer kids. But I would be taking ten steps back and my house I own would be to small. I was thinking then maybe I could do a non profit foster care and possibly start a small ranch and donate the organic beef to the local shelter and maybe do a food stand for the homeless. I just don’t know where to start or how to. Anyone a pro out there ????
Join us in the tribe and let’s flesh out this idea! I like the way you’re thinking though!

You just jumpstarted me.
Hi Ashlee, i want to start a non profit organization, can you please help me with more information.
