    I really admire Ricky's proffesionalism, and it's great how he conducted this interview; he behaved gracefully while still speaking out against Rothenberg.
    I understand that he has to be cautious as to how he addresses this situation in order to keep his career safe without ignoring what's going on. He really did the best he could in such a tight spot.
    While I disagree with some of the specifics (i.e. that we should continue to watch the show), it's clear he has the best intentions. I've gotta commend him (and Ben; I've just discoverd him today, but he did an amzing job on this interview) for making the effort of speaking out against the bullying and bad representation by the showrunner.
    And also, it was pretty adorable watching him geek out over his cast-mates. lmao

      +Nancy Spungen I disagree about watchign the show part. If you seriously have just fallen out of love with it them thats absolutely fine. But a tv show is made by hundreds of people. The 100 is made by every member of crew, producer etc and cast all of which arent Jason Rothenberg. I dont particularly like season 3 not because of all the drama necessarily but the writing wasnt as good as season 2. BUT having said that I think the cast are doing a great job (when allowed), and Eliza in particular is such a great lead. I like this show enough despite the stuff i dont like the continue and see where it'll go

    • @nancyspungen556
      @nancyspungen556 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +ellieandbaby - That's part of what makes him a great interviewer. I can see how it seems rude to keep directing the attention away from the issues with how Ricky's character was handled, but I think the interviewer balanced the two fairly well. Lexa's death marks the trigger of a massive shitstorm, and I think Ricky knew going into this that she was going to be a main topic.
      Ultimately both Lexa and Lincoln's treatment only highlight Rothenberg's faulty decisions regarding this show, which was one of the main themes of this interview. I think bringing her up only drove Ricky's point home: that a great cast and crew (and fanbase) are being shafted by their showrunner.
      Sorry for the long ass reply, this entire situation has had me pretty fed up lol

    • @gunnyo50
      @gunnyo50 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Nancy Spungen I'm pretty surprised to hear the boss of the show had major issues with ricky. It always seem to me that Ricky got on very well with everyone on the show, being a good professional and doing his job well. Grown men talk out their issues in private before making drastic decisions and drama out in the public that make everyone to related to that show lives uncomfortable. It seems to me the boss of the 100 needs to be replaced A.S.A.P.

    • @FuzzyDlop
      @FuzzyDlop 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +gunnyo50 Sure, obviously the fact that he got an offer to star as THE LEAD in American Gods by Neil Gaiman on Starz didn't have any effect on the faith of his character. Some people are really stupid; the actors were going away, both to do cable dramas and considering that this is a post-apocalyptic series there was no way for them to survive. In a family drama maybe they could have had a nice send-off to college but this is not a family drama. Wake up.

    • @nancyspungen556
      @nancyspungen556 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Fuzzy Dunlop - Obviously there's no way to know for sure whether Ricky is telling the truth, but he says that he had decided to leave the show already by the time he got the American Gods part. He made it sound like there were no scheduling issues and that he was good until the end of the season.
      The main issue here is why he felt that he had to leave in the first place. We don't know exatly what went on behind the scenes, but he felt that he'd been mistreated seriously enough that he was willing to risk damaging his career (albeit not too much, this entire thing was handled very professionally) in order to speak out about it.
      And while Lincoln's death is understandable, the timing, the way it happened, and the fact that even that was apparently cut (I haven't actually seen it, so I'm not sure of how much was shown) is why people are getting angry about it. Both he and Lexa had rushed, ultimately meaningless deaths that take away from their characters significantly.
      This is just the surface of a deep ass well of problems that have arisen from this show. It really isn't just a bunch of kids crying over the loss of a fictional character that they loved.

    For a bonified gay chick, I'm so in love with Ricky. Such an inspiring and genuine dude! I want a bromance with him...you know, go to the gym together, play video games, sing duets, talk about women, drink and occasionally spill tea, etc.. He's such a breath of fresh air during this JRoth shitstorm. Not only do the fans of The 100 deserve better than Jason, but the Cast and Crew deserve better than Jason. So sad to see Lincoln/Ricky go and even more devastated to hear the process behind it. What a huge loss for the fans and the show itself. What the hell was Jason thinking? SMH. Good for you, Ricky! There's no greater pain than living against your truth 🙌🏼 ❤️ I look forward to American Gods and everything else you do in the future! Best of luck. Cheers.

    I'm actually sad because Lincoln was one of my favoutire character. Ricky is such a beautiful person! He deserved better. Truly. I'm happy because he is going to play Shadow (and American Gods is an amazing book. You guys.. should read it). JRoth should be ashamed. He bullied a good guy. This is disgusting, as Ricky said.
    And to be clear... I don't think that Ricky was upset only because the character was cut off. It is not only about screentime. It is about the way JRoth acts. There was a storyline for Lincoln and it was cut off because JRoth has problems with Ricky. A stupid child, from my point of view.
    I hope that the other members of the cast are okay. I mean, I hope JRoth is not bullying someone else of the cast. I love this cast and it seems that Ricky loves them too. They gave him all the support he needed.

    • @Savescreen
      @Savescreen 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    • @tylerbabbitt9968
      @tylerbabbitt9968 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      +Savescreen I would never say anger isn't validated. A show can make someone feel anything and that's valid. I just think letting that anger cloud over the other positive aspects of the show and bashing the show isn't the right response. If you want to stop watching, that's okay, but attacking the writers and whatnot just seems like a lot. There's a whole lot of positive representation on this show that people are forgetting. Having a discussion about the trope and learning from it is one thing, attacking the show over it is another. That's just how I feel.

    I actually so agree with him about season 3. Forget all the drama and deaths and everything, I just think it wasnt as well written. What he said about Pike was so true and exactly what I thought too. The reason why I loved season 2 so much was because of this interplay between right and wrong and Clarke had that line in the finale about trying to be the good guy, and questioning whether she was, and then Abby goes; maybe there are no good guys. Dante and Cage were the 'baddies' but you got why they were acting how they were. And the real emotional pull was from really understanding why everything happened how it happened. This season hasnt made too much sense in terms of character. Its still great mainly because of Eliza she is absolutely incredible

      Agreed. The series is still very good! Just the storyline was weird (especially towards the end, the beginning with the ice nation wanting to go to war was actually VERY interesting to me). With the introduction of ALIE... it wasn't bad, but the writing wasn't that good. It went a bit over the top and became ridiculous in my opinion.

    for those a bit upset, it's strange but I completely understand why Ricky was so adamant about supporting the show and I don't think it was PR. however, I do think he misspoke when he suggested that EVERYONE continue to watch. this show has caused some serious trauma for a lot of people and it's understandable why they need to distance themselves. wrt Ricky, I was in a similar situation n voluntarily left a very lucrative career because I couldn't stand behind how myself n my coworkers were being treated or how the department was being run. fortunately I had the circumstances where I could leave, others did not. I left for my own happiness but I'd never wish the company to go down. I have friends who still work there and are able to support their families because of it. my old boss is the problem not the company or the other employees. same situation here, Jason is the problem. the important take away that may have been missed was "this show needs the show runner it deserves". throughout the interview he mentioned how he disagreed with the way several character stories went. he clearly thinks the Lexa situation was handled horribly. he genuinely cares for the cast and crew and loved (past tense) the show as we all did. but what's done is done, short of redoing season 3 with a new show runner there's no way to fix it now. but for the other talented actors and cast, he hopes their situation gets better, as do I. I've lost hope for this show at this point, after Lexa I was ruined and now I'm completely done after Lincoln. JR threw away a great show for ego and a stupid plot with so many holes it's not even funny. it's unfortunate considering the storyline potential and the great actors he had.

    If Ricky has tried to leave the show multiple times in the past, why is it so confusing for Jason to reduce screentime and storylines for Lincoln? How was Jason "trying to cut you out" after you admit to the fact that you've tried to leave the show more than once?

    True what he said tho, about killing off characters too early and sabotaging the film, i mean in every show the first season is always the best, this film being no different. The second season was still great, but 3/4/5 its really bad. I have no other words to describe it other then just bad. Rumours of another season coming out as well, the story line is just gone.

    Jason Rottenberg being silent on twitter for almost a month tells me that he did "bully" Ricky Whittle off the show. Don't get me wrong, I love the show and I will continue watching it, because it's the best I've ever seen. However, when personal stuff affects the PLOT OF THE SHOW - it's unacceptable! I think JR is a great producer and writer, but it seems that he can be an awful person. If I'm wrong, than please release a statement mr JR and tell the public, the fans of the show what happened. If you did something wrong - be brave and honest, admit it, ask for forgivness and move on!

    Lincolns death was just bullshit. After everything he'd been through in season 1&2, he ends up getting executed in season 3. Ricky is such a good and inspirational person, so hearing him talk about this made me so sad. Jason is a jackass and he made a big mistake treating Ricky like that.
    I know this was a while ago, but I finished watching season three today and when I found out that Lincolns death was because of this, it really got me down. Jason is a grown man and he really should be able to act like one too. Hearing Ricky say "He made me leave something I love" really made me angry. (Like, I could go here and kick Jason in the balls. If I didn't live in Norway, which i do. But in my head i'm gonna punch him in the nose and kick him in the balls!)
    But honestly, Lincoln was such a good, selfless character that I instantly fell in love with. That nearly everyone watching the show, fell in love with. Making Ricky go and killing Lincoln, that absolutly didn't deserve to die, was a terrible mistake. Also it ruined the whole "right/wrong"-concept that made the show unique. Pike executing Lincoln was just a stupid decision and I totally agree that Lincoln leaving could have been a better decision.
    And Jason Rothenberg, (or whatever his name is) can go to hell.

      Ricky is an actor his only job is well to act. Jason made it so he could not do his job. So not only did Ricky have his time wasted but even when he wanted to quit in s2 he couldn't. It's not even about the lines or screen time like Ricky himself said in this interview. Ricky understands this is an ensemble show but for his character to be in the start of an ep but mysteriously not seen again that sends a very clear message to Ricky from Jason. Basically saying I control you and you can't do anything about it since I'm your boss. To have an employer do something of that sort is sick and yes bullying. Basically Jason toyed with with Ricky and his character. Ricky did not sign up for whatever Jason was trying to pull on him. Wish Ricky the best and thankful he wasn't silent. Since as Ricky has wonderfully said bullies thrive in silence and should not be given that power.

    • @rosie4748
      @rosie4748 8 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +washabifudakuru things change all the time in production, we don't hear Paige crying about not having enough scenes. If an actor is getting cut or has made it clear they want to move on why would you invest screentime in that person. Its a 45 min show.. only so many peoples stories you can invest in. New characters were introduced those new characters needed storylines.He moved on, he should have been more professional and kept it moving.Now he's doing interviews to backtrack because he knows what he said negatively reflects on the show and the cast/crew. He wouldn't have to comment at all if he didnt throw shade and post it on social media like a 15 year old.

  • @davidwan7603
    @davidwan7603 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

    I think Ricky is being a bit of a diva here. I mean, not having as much of his character in the scripts as he would like really does not mean that he is being bullied. Besides, I think his storyline has been alright this season, it was interesting to see his position under Pike's anti grounder regime and his death was not meaningless at all. He died a hero sacrificing himself to save his people and this will have an effect on a number of characters.

    • @davidwan7603
      @davidwan7603 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      melissapoo7 Exactly. However, I feel now that many fans have turned against J.Roth for the Lexa death, they will overlook everything and disagree with this death regardless. Really hope the fans will leave the show alone. J.Roth may or may not have made a mistake with the Lexa death but it is still a great show regardless with an amazing cast.

    • @Greywaren96
      @Greywaren96 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      +David Wan I don't agree with this. I think his death was weak and completely out of character for him to just give up the way he did. I don't care for clexa and I actually liked Lexa's death (in my opinion was way better written than wells' or finn's, and it actually moved the plot forward, contrary to popular belief) but Lincoln's death was just to give octavia a reason to kill pike (which i'm p sure is what's going to happen) but I felt like he didn't need to die at all. Like Ricky said in that interview, he could have stayed until the end of the season, but Jason wanted him gone as quickly as possible.

    • @robjo9265
      @robjo9265 8 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There is "having less screen time" and being almost completely cut off the show. Just compare season 2, where he was basically in every episode and season 3, where he appeared shortly in 1 and 2, got only mentioned in episode 3 (not even seen). In 4 and 5 he was seen a bit again, but then in episode 6 and 7 he wasn't seen, nor was he mentioned. He only appeared in the credits! Maybe Jason had a role for him later in Polis by helping his people there, we don't know, but as far as it went, he was basically written out completely by jason and I can understand why Ricky left. Although I might have decided differently.

    • @jaxon3333
      @jaxon3333 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Herschel Grubstein ok so I know this is a while ago and I'm not even sure if you care anymore but Ricky actually wanted to leave in season 2 as well for a lack of screen time despite the fact that he was so many episodes and had a great arc. So it makes me think that Ricky was just being a diva and felt he was entitled to more screen time.

    I joined The 100 fandom a year ago. I couldn't understand why the actors seemed to have so little independence when talking about their characters and why the fandom hated Jason so much. A year later it's perfectly clear to me: he is a egomaniac narcissistic man, that bullies his fans and by the looks of it, he also bullies his actors and writing team. I know FOR SURE when the show ends that a lot of dirt about Jason is gonna come out and I can only hope that he never works ever again.

I believe battle would have been a more honor way for his charater to die in my opinion + it should also be more emotional she shouldn't have been the only one crying.
