    An MPC era Classic from 1977-1980
    What’s the first thing you do when you get a new engine?
    I see if it works and then I take it apart! I always enjoy taking a new purchase apart to see what’s inside.
    This is not a full service video, but really just a closer look and an investigation into a couple issues.
    Hope you enjoy the video!

    CRC Electronics Cleaner. Get the one that says safe on plastic. Ace Hardware should have it. It will clean the old grease off. I used it to clean the old grease/oil dirt off the bearings on a 90 year old Lionel 252 Electric. As for the wheel and gear problem, take it to a Lionel repair shop. That engine is a Lionel 2046 in green paint with some mods to the smoke unit and head light. They should be able to make the repairs. Plastic gears were used (I think they are Delrin Nylon) because they are considered self lubricating. Lionel probable used them because engines were coming with worn out metal gears because they weren't being lubricated.

    WD-40 works fantastic on softening up grease and oil I put WD on a Q-tip and work it in, for gears u you can use an old tooth bush on gears. I have the 1982 6-8210 Hudson love Hudson’s. Luckily this unit I got was never used all gears were dry no oils what so ever. I ran it as is then proceeded the next day to oil and grease it up. And runs awesome smokes like a champ. Go it with original box instructions and warrantee papers. What I don’t like is the sound way to 80’s lol.

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I use WD40, probably too much of it sometimes. I like the Qtip idea, I should do that.
      The 8210, is that the Joshua Lionel Cohen Hudson? That’s a handsome engine, wouldn’t mind picking one of those up at some point.
      Thanks for the tips!

      Track is laid. Hopefully detailing to start soon. Dont know how I would really super elevate the track using the tubular track, it’s so stiff. Something to keep in mind for the next layout.

    The manufacturing of this locomotive made for some very tight gear tolerances made by Lionel, thus using lots of lube. This was corrected when The Blue Comet was introduced. I updated the cars with LEDs. Enjoy the set Dave.

  • @ozarkmidlandsouthernrailway

    Dave perhaps using a toothbrush with some light oil might help get at the "gunk". I have also used a really small flathead screwdriver to gently scape the old grease and dirt out of the tight places. Boy the cleaning really made a difference. The old Southern Crescent Limited is really running well now. Dave, have you seen my last couple of videos? Just asking as I had not been seeing much from T4 and then learned that somehow I got unsubscribed. Just had to re-subscribe. No big deal, I just didn't know it had happened. From what I gather that kind of thing can happen from time to time. Enjoyed the video. Bill B.

    • @dagryffynhobby
      @dagryffynhobby  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I don’t think I really used the toothbrush much this time, I usually do use it with a little oil on it.
      I’m surprised it’s running as well as it is. I think the issue I’m having with it slowing on the curves really has to do with the track gauge not being exact.
      I saw the making a tunnel video, haven’t seen your most recent video yet though.

    For the caked grease, put the engine in a cradle. Get your Dremel with an 80 grit flapper style sanding wheel. Start the engine and the Dremel. Sand gently until the gunk is gone. I had to do this on a couple badly maintained postwar rolling stock.

    That loose plastic gear looks like it might be a candidate for a metal replacement part if you can find one. You might be on the lookout for another blind driver with some more teeth in it. Otherwise, excellent find! The sound of steam was an interesting idea, but it never really worked all that well even new out out of the box...I know as I bought 2 of those locomotives new in the early 80s. Then it sounded like loud static, now with some age I guess they have the "not so mighty" sound of static...er I mean steam! lol But, I like the MPC steamers. May be getting some more of it in the future...we shall see. Thanks, Dave!
