Kathy, I made my first placemat today using your Framed Seasons pattern. I can't believe how great it turned out! Usually I make some dumb mistake the first time I try a new pattern but this one actually came out perfectly. Love, love, love it. I'm on my way to making many more now.
Thank you for such an easy-to-follow tutorial. My sister wants 4 placemats for her apartment in Greece (over-looking-the-Gulf of Corinth)!! I'm the quilter sister. I like the mitre options. I used to struggle with mitred corners and your technique makes so much sense. :)
this was such a great video. I get laughed at because I save batting scraps like material scraps. I have actually used more than a dozen pieces of batting for a quilted sham front. I just overlap a bit and then use a rotor cutter and no lumps or bumps or a box of useful batting pieces. I do quilt 1 inch apart to make sure I catch all the batting and it looks like a lattice work when finished. As a dare I used the batting bits and pieces stuffed into small bags and use as corner decorations for end of bed bolsters. I am no longer the scrooge of batting. lol thank you for the place mats, I can see the batting pieces lining up already. thank you
Thank you Kathy. I loved your tutorial especially the finish with the mitered corner. I realize this is an older tutorial but I sure hope the pattern is still available for accurate sizes.
+Sarah Leigh, yes, all ten patterns are still available for sale in our online shop, and at shops across North America. :) Visit www.TheQuiltPatch.com or the following link to learn more about each mix-and-match-able design: bit.ly/1RhagLU.
I watched my grandmother make queen size quilts on her hand the 2x2 inch squares, the designs took my breath away because they was so beautiful. I will be making a quilt soon and I am planing to use your method as you go, but make it a queen size for this fall. I will try to post it on your face book page when it is finish. I would love to see a tour of your quilting studio if you have a video on it, because I love the way it look in the back ground. In His Grace, Lorisa aka ellescrapper
Prairie Sky Quilting's line of Fun&Done! quilt patterns uses a quilt-as-you-go technique quite similar to ours; "the quilting is completed while you construct each block... sew the blocks together and you're done"! You may also want to look into "Reversible Quilts", a book by Sharon Pederson. Her method of hooking the blocks together is very different but her quilt-as-you-go technique is the same. Hope this helps, safepethaven!
Thanks for sharing, you take the stress out of wanting to make a table runner and placemats. Very clear instructions. Do you have a tutorial for each mat?
You're welcome, Linda Lober! We have ten different patterns available on our website, www.TheQuiltPatch.com, for $4.99 each. Our shipping is super cheap, too! :D If you prefer, orders can also be placed over the phone via (517) 423-0053.
We're ECSTATIC the combination of the pattern and how-to video was a successful "one-two punch" for you, Linda! Psst-two NEW Quilt-As-You-Go Placemat patterns will be debuting in April! C:
Make sure to check the seam allowance. If the placemat is coming out big, the seam allowance is too small. The math works out to the edge of the batting, but having it hang over is the best problem; all you have to do is trim to the batting and you are on your way again!
Thanks, Lisa!! Our patterns are carried by Checker Distributors, the largest wholesale supplier of quilting/sewing/needlework products in the US, so they are available to any shop that uses CD. Later this summer you'll be able to QP Quilts & Co. patterns at our online shop @ thequiltpatch [dot] com but, in the meantime, we can do the transaction over the phone! Simply call us up at (517) 423-0053!
In a month or two, you'll be able to buy the patterns at TheQuiltPatch [dot] com, Maria. In the mean time, call (517) 423-0053 and we'll ship 'em straight to your front door! If you'd like to see all eight of them before ordering, shoot an email to info [at] thequiltpatch [dot] com.
Great question, Marlene! Our website's in the process of being coded, so it should be live before Christmas which, if you can believe it, is only thirty-six days away! However, it just so happens that I'm currently eight months pregnant, so we're going to do our best to get some of our best-selling items online before he or she arrives. In the meantime, we'd be more than happy to do a phone order. Give us a quick call @ (517) 423-0053 before 4pm ET and we'll ship your order out the same day!
Each edge of the placemat is finished by bring the backing around to the front as binding. It doesn't matter if you begin by wrapping the binding on the sides first and then top and bottom (or vice versa). If you still have questions, give us a call at (517) 423-0053!
Love this tutorial. I have always wanted to do something like this and now I can thanks to you. I do have one question though. When you press the seams one on the polyester batting, doesn't it melt the batting?
Hi Sadie! We shoot most of our tutorials in our promo room. It's chock full of 1,000+ bolts of hand-picked promotional fabric that's "just a season or two past new".
+Connie Otts, it's working now. :) Our website had a case of the hiccups earlier and needed a quick refresh. Here's a shortcut right to the Framed Seasons placemats: www.thequiltpatch.com/quilt-as-you-go-placemats-framed-seasons.html.
Amoresable, the eight Quilt-As-You-Go Placemat patterns are available for $4.99 each. In fact, we can ship one or all eight straight to your front door!
Love your placemats! I was looking to create placemats. I love your method. May need to call to get pattern sent. I am in Georgia but originally from Michigan. Thank you for sharing!
Great video...Thanks! I have alot of leftover quilt batting scraps from Quilter's Dream poly that I'm going to try on these placemats and see how they work, very similar hand to the polyester fleece ;-) ~Deb
Why can't the pattern be downloaded as a PDF after payment? It would be accessible quickly and save shipping charges. That's the wa most are done now. I really would like to get the patterns sooner. They are awesome! Tutorial is good... A little fast but thank goodness for pause. :)
I was just sitting down to reply to your email, D Simmons. :) We are considering selling our patterns as instant downloads in the near future, but we haven't yet decided on the best course of action. Since they're small and our shipping is based solely on weight, it costs (approximately) $.50 to ship one placemat pattern, $1.65 to ship five, and $2.55 to ship all ten. If you order before 3pm tomorrow, your order will be sent out in the afternoon and could arrive as early as Tuesday (depending on your location). If we do choose to sell them as PDFs, I'll let you know as soon as they're available. Thank you for your question and recommendation!
+wog1949, nope, it's completely different. Though you can use regular quilt batting, we really like Sew Lazy sew-in fleece and, for a flatter, no-crease option, Sew Lazy Stiff Stuff. Check 'em out here: www.thequiltpatch.com/search_results.html?k=batting+for+placemats&submitB=GO.
I loved your tutorial. I wanted to get the pattern, but was unable to find in online. Can you tell me where to purchase the pattern? Thanks :) Great tutorial
Based on what I just learned from Google, pannolenci or lenci cloth is similar to felt which, in our opinion, isn't ideal for placemats. Since they will need laundering sooner or later, it's hard to tell how the lenci cloth will react to being washed in a placemat. If you don't have quilt batting or fleece on hand, two to three layers of flannel fabric would work well. Good luck, Luna!
I'm unclear how your foundation piecing techniques would work on anything larger than a placemat (a queen sized quilt for example); yes, it's quilt-as-you-go for a small placemat but those steps would not work for a larger projects; suggestions for alternatives?
Thanks for your feedback, +211ssw . We *completely* agree with you. That being said, I think you're gonna *love* the changes we've made when we debut new tutorials later this month and in December.
I'm Grand Rapids born & raised...and I still live here

We are VERY proud to be a Michigan company, Dana!
this was very easy to follow and informative. You make this look easy enough for me to want to try it myself. Thank you

I did not know how to get the bobbin thread to the top!! Love your placemats.
You make things look so so simple and I just love this video . Thanks for posting
Thanks for this video. These look so easy and fast to make up. Looks like I will have a draw full in no time at all. Thanks again
Wow, I loved them, they look pretty easy, they look so much nicer then just the plain ol ones I have made in the past...Thanks

Thanks for the tip, Jannelle Gomez. That's a great idea!
Good!!!! Love how you do that!
Love this tutorial. I have always wanted to do something like this and now I can thanks to you. I do have one question though. When you press the seams one on the polyester batting, doesn't it melt the batting?
I'm jealous of the stash behind you....:)

Mammoo28, the glue is called Roxanne Glue Baste-It.
Cool, Deb! Let us know how they turn out!
Thanks, ShariShimmers77!! C: The placemats are an absolute ball to make!

Hi there~ is your fleece batting the same fleece that is used for blankets?
+wog1949, nope, it's completely different. Though you can use regular quilt batting, we really like Sew Lazy sew-in fleece and, for a flatter, no-crease option, Sew Lazy Stiff Stuff. Check 'em out here: www.thequiltpatch.com/search_results.html?k=batting+for+placemats&submitB=GO.
We hope to "open" our online shop in April. Keep your eyes peeled for updates via Facebook, Angela!
How does one order from you or see what you have available? I tried to go to your website and your shop isn't set up yet.
These are amazing, going to have to try making these on my own without a pattern, thanks :)
Let us know how they turn out, Deb!! Feel free to post a photo of them on our Facebook page @ fb.com/thequiltpatch!
Thanks a lot for your tutorial...it was very nice...
Please do a video on the disappearing striped one.
What brand of mini iron do you use?
I loved your tutorial. I wanted to get the pattern, but was unable to find in online. Can you tell me where to purchase the pattern? Thanks :) Great tutorial
What are the measurements for the pieces?
i would love to know what this glue is !! it looks so easy with it
Do you not have to pull up the bobbin thread at the end of the strip?
Brilliant! Thank you!
Thank you, beautiful video :)
what type of fabric do u use for these?
love, love, love your video...did i mention i loved it?
A Michigan company! Hooray!
Woven wonder one, please do a video on that one.
Thanks, Cher! C:
Thanks, Shelly! You can see all ten patterns at thequiltpatch {dot} com.
thank you so much ...i cant wait to get my sewing machine so i can make these!!
How can I get the patterns? Where do I go to order them? Txs. ME
You did not show how you finish your green border on the perpendicular strips. As you show it you would have a raw edge. Did I miss something? Thanks
what are the measurement for the material?
hi can i use pannolenci for batting?
Based on what I just learned from Google, pannolenci or lenci cloth is similar to felt which, in our opinion, isn't ideal for placemats. Since they will need laundering sooner or later, it's hard to tell how the lenci cloth will react to being washed in a placemat. ok! tks a lot!
Can't see what you are doing through the closed caption bar!?
Click the CC button near the bottom right side of the video to turn them off. :)
Would have been nice if they would state the size of the material.
Love your video tutorials! When I go to quiltpatch (dot) com it states "coming soon". Any idea of when you will have that up and running. Thanks.
your tutorials are not loading
I'm unclear how your foundation piecing techniques would work on anything larger than a placemat (a queen sized quilt for example); yes, it's quilt-as-you-go for a small placemat but those steps would not work for a larger projects; suggestions for alternatives?
Just so you know, the patterns are only $4.99 each. :D
TheQuiltPatch Where do we purchase?
Angle of camera must be raised- everything referenced isn't seen!
Thanks for your feedback, +211ssw . We *completely* agree with you. That being said, I think you're gonna *love* the changes we've made when we debut new tutorials later this month and in December.
We use 100% cotton fabric, jessicamariewest22.
Oops, managed to shut is down.
Nope, it's not worth it. We just turn the back, clip it flush to the fabric, and then do the top.
The quiltpatch, Your not giving measurements, we need measurements please.
Apparently we need to BUY the pattern to get them. I was surprised.
